For Season of Discovery, “best in slot” depends on phase and on whether you mean an ideal raid set or gear you can obtain before raiding. Phase 8 is the latest endgame scope in the surfaced guides, but those guides were updated in April 2025 and do not establish the live client state today. Use the Phase 8 guides as a starting point, not a guarantee of current recommendations. This guide explains how to choose a slot-by-slot list without confusing raid BiS, pre-raid gearing, and older phase advice.
Which BiS list applies to your character?
Start with your phase and intended content. A Phase 8 endgame target list is not interchangeable with an earlier level-cap list or a pre-raid route. Wowhead’s Phase 8 Feral DPS guide identifies patch 1.15.8 and was updated April 30, 2025; Icy Veins’ phase-spanning gear page includes Scarlet Enclave Phase 8 and Naxxramas Phase 7 and was updated April 8, 2025. These dates describe the guides, not necessarily the current live game state.

- Raid BiS: the ideal target set for the stated phase and raid context. It can include rare drops and pieces that take repeated runs to acquire.
- Pre-raid: a separate, attainable route for gearing before entering the relevant raid. Wowhead maintains a distinct Phase 8 pre-raid guide.
- Replacement gear: a practical alternative when a raid drop has not appeared. Check the item’s source and compare its contribution rather than treating one missing piece as a reason to stop progressing.

For every slot, confirm that the recommendation matches your phase and content, then weigh the item against an attainable alternative. A useful gear plan records the source, accessibility, relevant stats, and any set-bonus contribution together; a nominal BiS item is not automatically the best next step if it is far less accessible than a strong replacement.

- Phase and raid: identify the phase and the raid context attached to the recommendation.
- Acquisition: distinguish raid drops from dungeon, PvP, profession, world-drop, and reputation sources. These routes differ in access and effort.
- Stats: use a priority that is explicitly tied to the guide and phase rather than blending conflicting rankings.
- Set bonuses: evaluate the bonus alongside individual item stats; changes to a bonus can alter the value of completing a set.
- Replacement: note a realistic alternative for an unowned or inaccessible drop, keeping that route distinct from ideal raid BiS.
Feral DPS stat priorities are not one universal list
The cited guides disagree, so do not treat either ranking as a timeless rule. Wowhead’s Phase 1 page says Strength is the primary stat, noting that one Strength grants 2 Attack Power, and highlights Hit and Haste before Attack Power and Agility. Icy Veins’ Season of Discovery PvE gear guide lists Hit > Crit > Haste > Agility > Strength > Attack Power > Stamina. These are guide-specific recommendations with different phase scopes, not a single reconciled ranking.
For a Phase 8 gear decision, use a stat priority that matches the current phase, build, and encounter assumptions. If a recommendation is based on an older phase guide, do not transfer it to Phase 8 without checking current calculations or a current phase-specific guide.

Phase 8 set-bonus changes to check
Wowhead’s Phase 8 guide, by Balor and updated April 30, 2025, reports reductions to two set bonuses: Soul of the Claw’s two-piece bonus changed from 40% extra damage and six additional seconds to 10% extra damage and three additional seconds, while Soul of the Frenetic’s two-piece damage bonus changed from 15% to 5%. These are guide-reported change values, not independent tests; check for later patch changes before relying on them as live behavior.
