If you type a name into the WoW: Forever character-creation screen and leave without submitting the character, Blizzard has not documented a separate, durable reservation for that unfinished entry. The actionable reservation step is to complete character creation and verify that the character appears on your character list. A character that is created but never played is a different case: the Early Name Reservation instructions do not require you to log in and play immediately, although they also do not promise indefinite retention.
For the October 27–November 3, 2026 Early Name Reservation period, use the qualifying WoW account, choose a ruleset, create the character, and confirm it is listed before leaving the client. WoW: Forever is scheduled to launch on November 4, 2026.

What does “reserved” mean in WoW: Forever?
In Blizzard’s current WoW: Forever instructions, a name is secured through a completed character, not by merely typing text into a field. The process is to launch the WoW: Forever client, select a ruleset, choose a name, and finish creating the character. The character list is the practical confirmation that the submission succeeded.
That distinction matters because an unfinished creation screen is not described as a holding system. Blizzard has not published a countdown, grace period, or other expiry rule for a name that was entered but never submitted. You should therefore treat an abandoned creation attempt as unconfirmed rather than as a reservation with a known duration.

What happens in each situation?
| Player action | What the current evidence establishes | What remains unknown |
|---|---|---|
| Type a name, then back out before creating the character | No separate, durable reservation is documented. The instructions make completed character creation the actionable step. | The exact time, if any, before that unsubmitted name can be chosen again. |
| Create the character but do not play it | The character has been created and should appear on the character list. The reservation instructions do not add an immediate-play requirement. | Those instructions do not promise that an unplayed character is retained forever under every later policy. |
| Delete a created character | An immediate name release was stated for the 2019 WoW Classic event. | That 2019 rule has not been established as a universal WoW: Forever or retail-WoW rule. |
| Use a stress-test character or name | Stress-test characters were scheduled to be wiped before Early Name Reservation; test participation did not preserve a name. | Nothing in the current material turns a wiped test character into a live reservation. |
If you only entered the name
Leaving the creator before the final submission is the case with the least evidence. Blizzard’s wording describes creating a character, not locking a name while you browse options, disconnect, or close the client. Because no official timer is published, do not wait for an assumed number of minutes or days before trying again.
If you created it but never logged in
Creation and play are separate actions. The current announcement tells eligible players to create characters during the early window; it does not say that the character must be played immediately. Keep the character on the list, but do not convert that silence into a promise that the name can never be reclaimed by a later policy or account action.
If you delete it
Deletion is more consequential than simply not playing. Blizzard’s 2019 Classic announcement said that deleting a created character made its name immediately available to claim again for that event. That is a historical rule for the 2019 event, not proof of how WoW: Forever or modern retail WoW handles every deletion, so avoid deleting a name-holding character unless you are prepared to lose it.
When is the WoW: Forever name-reservation window?
Blizzard’s October 20, 2026 announcement sets Early Name Reservation for October 27 through November 3, 2026. The official product information lists WoW: Forever’s launch as November 4, 2026. The early reservation window therefore ends before launch; it is not the same event as launch-day character creation.

The limit is up to three characters total across all rulesets during Early Name Reservation. Blizzard explicitly says this restriction applies only during the early reservation event. It is an event limit, not a general statement about every character slot or every later version of WoW.
Who can reserve a name?
Eligibility is tied to a qualifying upgrade or Collector’s Edition purchase on the specific WoW account being used. A qualifying purchase lets that account participate; it does not guarantee a particular name. Names are first-come, first-served, and Blizzard’s naming guidance says desired names cannot be guaranteed.
Check the account and the game version before beginning. Signing in to a different WoW account, launching another WoW client, or assuming that a test character carries over can lead you to the wrong character list even if the name appears available on screen.
How do I make the reservation correctly?
You need an eligible WoW account, the WoW: Forever client installed through the Battle.net desktop app, and a name choice ready before the early window closes. The safest workflow is to complete the creation and then verify the result rather than treating a typed name as proof.

- Confirm the account. Sign in to the Battle.net account that holds the qualifying upgrade or Collector’s Edition eligibility. Do not assume eligibility on one account applies to another.
- Open the correct game version. In the Battle.net desktop app, select WoW: Forever and launch that client, not a different WoW installation or a stress-test build.
- Select the ruleset. Follow the client’s ruleset-selection screen before attempting to finalize the character. The three-character event limit applies across the available rulesets.
- Enter the desired name and finish creation. Typing the name is only part of the process. Continue through the character-creation submission until the client completes the character.
- Verify the character list. Return to the list for the selected ruleset and confirm that the new character is visible with the intended name. If it is not listed, treat the attempt as incomplete rather than assuming the name is held.
- Stop once the name is secured. Remember that the early event allows up to three characters total, so use the remaining slots deliberately.
Do I need to play the character to keep the name?
No immediate-play step appears in the current Early Name Reservation instructions. They describe creating the character, not reaching a level, entering the world, or completing a quest. That means a successfully created character can remain unused during the period covered by the announcement.
However, the absence of a play requirement is not an unlimited-retention guarantee. Blizzard has not stated a permanent policy for every future cleanup, transfer, deletion, or service change. The defensible action is to create the character and leave it intact, rather than relying on an unplayed status as extra protection.

The 2019 WoW Classic announcement is useful historical context but not a substitute for current WoW: Forever instructions. In that 2019 event, Blizzard said a deleted character’s name became immediately available again. The current WoW: Forever material establishes character creation as the reservation mechanism but does not repeat that deletion rule or provide a universal release timer.
Keep the events separate when making decisions:
- WoW: Forever, 2026: create the character during October 27–November 3, confirm it on the list, and do not assume an unsubmitted name is held.
- WoW Classic, 2019: deletion was explicitly described as releasing the name immediately for that event.
- Stress tests before WoW: Forever: test characters were scheduled for a wipe and did not preserve names into Early Name Reservation.
Applying the 2019 deletion language automatically to WoW: Forever would turn an event-specific statement into a rule Blizzard has not published for the current event.

Why is there no exact answer for an abandoned name?
The available Blizzard material does not publish a statistic, developer quote, or timer measuring how long an unsubmitted name remains unavailable. It also does not quantify how often players lose names after abandoning the creator. Any precise number of minutes, hours, or days would therefore be an invention rather than a documented WoW: Forever rule.
The practical consequence is simple: if the name matters, finish the character and check the list during the reservation window. If you only typed the name and left, return to the correct client and account and attempt a completed creation rather than waiting for an undocumented timeout.

Checklist before November 3, 2026
- Use the WoW account with the qualifying upgrade or Collector’s Edition eligibility.
- Launch the WoW: Forever client from Battle.net.
- Choose the intended ruleset.
- Complete character creation instead of leaving the name in an unfinished field.
- Confirm the character appears on the character list.
- Track the three-character total across rulesets during Early Name Reservation.
- Do not count stress-test participation as a reservation.
- Do not delete a name-holding character unless you accept that the current release behavior is not documented.
What should you assume if Blizzard has not stated a rule?
Assume only what the current instructions establish: a completed character is the documented reservation action, an entered-but-unsubmitted name has no published hold period, and a created character does not have an immediate-play requirement in the announcement. For anything beyond those points—especially deletion and long-term retention—avoid treating an older event’s rule or community guess as a current guarantee.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a qualifying purchase reserve the name automatically?
No. The purchase is an eligibility condition on the specific WoW account; the name still has to be claimed through the client’s character-creation process. Because selection is first-come, first-served, eligibility alone cannot secure a particular spelling.

What should I check if the character is missing from the list?
First verify that you launched WoW: Forever, selected the intended ruleset, and signed in to the account with the qualifying eligibility. Until the character appears on that list, regard the attempt as unfinished rather than assuming the name is protected.
Do stress-test names carry into the live reservation event?
No evidence supports that. Stress-test characters were scheduled to be wiped before Early Name Reservation, and participation in the test did not itself preserve a name.
