Caterpie is the more dependable default when both species are available. Its evolution path is fixed, it reaches Butterfree at level 10, and Butterfree combines a useful Speed profile with Compound Eyes and a documented status-oriented learnset. Wurmple evolves just as quickly, but its level-7 branch is not directly selectable: the game can produce Beautifly or Dustox from an underlying personality-related value. That uncertainty can still pay off if you prefer Beautifly’s offensive profile, Dustox’s Bug/Poison typing, or Wurmple is the species your version actually offers. The right choice therefore depends on version availability, whether you value predictability, and which final role you need.
At a glance
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Caterpie | Players who want a predictable early-game utility line | Fixed Caterpie → Metapod → Butterfree path; 45 Speed at the first stage; Butterfree is Bug/Flying with a currently listed 395 base-stat total | Oct 2026 |
| Wurmple | Players happy with either final branch or seeking stronger early Attack | Wurmple → Silcoon → Beautifly or Cascoon → Dustox; 45 Attack and 30 Special Defense at the first stage; branch is effectively random to the player | Oct 2026 |
Which early-game Bug Pokémon is better?
Caterpie wins as the general recommendation because its payoff is known from the moment you catch it. You know that every Caterpie becomes Metapod and then Butterfree, so you can plan a team around Butterfree’s Bug/Flying typing, Compound Eyes and access to moves such as Confusion and Sleep Powder. The exact level at which those moves are learned depends on the game, so a move-level chart from one release should not be applied to every generation.

Beautifly is also Bug/Flying and has a currently listed 395 base-stat total, while Dustox trades some total points for Bug/Poison typing and a more specially defensive profile. The important qualification is that you cannot simply order Wurmple to become the branch you want.
What the verdict does not mean
This is not a claim that Caterpie is catchable wherever Wurmple is, or that Butterfree defeats every Beautifly or Dustox in every battle. Encounter tables, move availability and balance changed between releases. Treat the recommendation as a decision rule for comparable early-game choices, then verify the species available in your specific game.

What do Caterpie and Wurmple evolve into?
Both lines begin as Bug types, evolve for the first time at level 7 and can reach their final stage at level 10. Caterpie’s route is fixed; Wurmple’s route branches.
| Stage | Caterpie line | Wurmple line |
|---|---|---|
| First stage | Caterpie (Bug) | Wurmple (Bug) |
| Level 7 | Metapod | Silcoon or Cascoon |
| Level 10 | Butterfree (Bug/Flying) | Beautifly (Bug/Flying) or Dustox (Bug/Poison) |
Caterpie → Metapod → Butterfree
There is no branch decision in this line. Any Caterpie that reaches level 7 becomes Metapod, and that Metapod becomes Butterfree at level 10. That certainty matters in a short early-game window: you can invest experience knowing the final typing and species in advance.
Wurmple → Silcoon → Beautifly or Cascoon → Dustox
Wurmple becomes Silcoon or Cascoon at level 7, then reaches Beautifly or Dustox at level 10. The result depends on an underlying personality-related value or encryption constant. It is more accurate to call the outcome effectively random from the player’s perspective than to say the game necessarily rolls a brand-new random result at the evolution screen.
There is no supported time-of-day rule or training trick in the supplied game-data references that lets you select the branch directly. If your party requires one specific final form, Caterpie’s fixed line is the safer planning choice.
How do their first-stage stats compare?
Caterpie and Wurmple each have 195 total base-stat points. The totals are identical, but the distribution is different: Caterpie is much faster, while Wurmple puts more points into Attack and Special Defense. These are species base stats from game data, not a prediction of a particular Pokémon’s in-battle numbers; level, nature-related mechanics, individual values and training can change those numbers.
| Base stat | Caterpie | Wurmple | Practical reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| HP | 45 | 45 | Equal starting durability by base value |
| Attack | 30 | 45 | Wurmple has the stronger physical-attack base |
| Defense | 35 | 35 | Equal physical-defense base |
| Special Attack | 20 | 20 | Equal, comparatively low special-attack base |
| Special Defense | 20 | 30 | Wurmple has the higher special-defense base |
| Speed | 45 | 20 | Caterpie has a substantial early Speed advantage |
| Total | 195 | 195 | Same total, different priorities |
What Caterpie’s Speed means
The 45 Speed base gives Caterpie a better chance to act first than Wurmple in otherwise similar circumstances. That does not guarantee first turn in every fight, but it makes Caterpie’s early turns more predictable. The higher Speed also fits the utility case for its eventual Butterfree line: acting before an opponent can matter when setting up a status move.

What Wurmple’s Attack and Special Defense mean
Wurmple starts with 45 Attack rather than Caterpie’s 30 and 30 Special Defense rather than 20. If you are using the unevolved Pokémon for several battles, that distribution favors physical damage and gives it a better special-defense base. Its 20 Speed, however, means it is less likely to move first against similarly leveled opponents.
What does each final evolution offer?
The final forms are not interchangeable reskins. Their typings, abilities and current listed totals point toward different jobs, and historical generations can show different individual stats.
Butterfree: predictable Bug/Flying utility
Butterfree is Bug/Flying, has Compound Eyes, and is currently listed with a 395 base-stat total. Its learnset includes Confusion and Sleep Powder, giving the species a documented route into special damage and status utility. The move level is release-specific; consult the learnset for the exact game rather than importing a level from a current database display into an older cartridge.
The currently listed Butterfree Special Attack is 90, while the same source lists 80 for Generations 2–5. That is a species-data revision across generations, not a contradiction about an individual Butterfree. When comparing games, use the value for the generation you are actually playing.
Beautifly: Bug/Flying with an offensive tilt
Beautifly is also Bug/Flying and is currently listed with a 395 base-stat total. Its listed Ability is Swarm. The Pokémon Company’s Pokédex describes Swarm as: “Powers up Bug-type moves when the Pokémon’s HP is low.” That text explains the Ability’s condition; it does not establish that Beautifly is universally stronger than Butterfree.
Beautifly’s currently listed Special Attack is 100, but the source lists 90 for Generations 3–5. If you are comparing an older Hoenn release with a modern species entry, preserve that generation qualifier. A higher listed Special Attack can make Beautifly attractive for a damage-focused plan, but the branch cannot be selected directly from Wurmple.

Dustox: Bug/Poison with a defensive alternative
Dustox is Bug/Poison, has ordinary Shield Dust, and is currently listed with a 385 base-stat total. Its typing gives a different set of resistances and weaknesses from the two Bug/Flying final forms, so Dustox may be the useful outcome when your party needs Poison typing rather than another Flying type.
Dustox’s lower listed total than Butterfree or Beautifly should not be treated as an automatic loss. Team coverage, the opponents in a particular section of a game, and the moves available in that release can matter more than a ten-point species-total difference. The decisive drawback for planning is that Wurmple may not give you Dustox when you want it.
Is Butterfree better than Beautifly?
Butterfree is usually the better choice for reliable utility; Beautifly is a reasonable alternative when you specifically want its offensive profile or already have a plan for the Wurmple branch. Both are Bug/Flying and currently listed at 395 total points, so the comparison is about distribution, abilities, learnsets and certainty rather than a simple total-stat winner.
| Decision factor | Butterfree | Beautifly |
|---|---|---|
| How you reach it | Guaranteed from Caterpie | Only if Wurmple follows the Silcoon branch |
| Typing | Bug/Flying | Bug/Flying |
| Ability listed in the references | Compound Eyes | Swarm |
| Current listed base-stat total | 395 | 395 |
| Current listed Special Attack | 90 | 100 |
| Historical Special Attack qualifier | 80 listed for Generations 2–5 | 90 listed for Generations 3–5 |
| Documented utility example | Confusion and Sleep Powder appear in the learnset | Swarm boosts Bug-type moves when HP is low, according to the Pokémon Company’s Pokédex wording |
For a player asking “which early-game Bug Pokémon is better?” without a specialized plan, Butterfree’s guaranteed route and documented status access make it the more dependable answer. Choose Wurmple instead when Beautifly’s potential offensive role is worth accepting the branch uncertainty, or when Wurmple is the locally available early Bug.
Can you choose Beautifly or Dustox?
Not directly through a menu choice, held item, time of day or a prescribed training pattern. The branch is determined by the underlying value attached to that Wurmple, so two Wurmple obtained in the same area can still produce different outcomes.
- Check your game’s species and evolution data. Confirm that Wurmple is obtainable and note the release-specific evolution behavior.
- Decide whether either final form works. If both Beautifly and Dustox fit your team, the branch is a manageable uncertainty. If only one fits, a fixed Caterpie line may be preferable where available.
- Raise Wurmple to level 7. The first evolution reveals Silcoon or Cascoon; it does not represent a player-selected branch.
- Continue to level 10. Silcoon becomes Beautifly and Cascoon becomes Dustox.
Because the references do not establish a reliable player-controlled method, do not plan around changing the clock or repeating a specific training routine. The practical solution is to accept the first branch, use the resulting form, or choose a different species when your version and team-building constraints allow it.

Which Pokémon is available in your game?
Availability is a prerequisite, not a footnote. The cited listings place Caterpie in Kanto games and Wurmple in Hoenn games, including early Hoenn routes. That regional split means the comparison is not evidence that both appear on the same early route, or even in the same title.
Why the game version changes the recommendation
- Different encounter tables: A species may be absent, delayed or restricted to a particular area in your release.
- Different move levels: Butterfree’s Confusion and Sleep Powder entries establish learnset access, but not one universal level across every game.
- Different base-stat history: Butterfree and Beautifly have generation-qualified Special Attack values in the references, so modern database rows cannot be copied into older-generation analysis without labels.
- Different team context: If your game already supplies a strong Flying type, Dustox’s Bug/Poison role may cover a need that another Bug/Flying cannot.
Before catching either Pokémon, look up the encounter table and learnset for the exact title, remake or generation. Avoid a universal route-and-moves chart unless it is explicitly version-specific.

Use the following decision framework instead of treating the species as a universal ranking.
| If your priority is… | Prefer | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A guaranteed final species | Caterpie | Its line always ends in Butterfree |
| Early Speed | Caterpie | 45 Speed versus Wurmple’s 20 |
| Higher unevolved Attack | Wurmple | 45 Attack versus Caterpie’s 30 |
| A higher unevolved Special Defense base | Wurmple | 30 versus Caterpie’s 20 |
| Documented status utility in the final form | Caterpie | Butterfree’s learnset includes Confusion and Sleep Powder, subject to game-specific levels |
| Bug/Poison typing | Wurmple | Only its Cascoon branch reaches Dustox |

| No concern about which final form appears | Wurmple | Both branches are available outcomes and the line evolves on the same level schedule |
Choose Caterpie when certainty is part of the strategy
Caterpie is the clean answer for a planned story team, a challenge run that needs a known species, or any situation where you want to build around Butterfree’s typing and utility. Its lower early Attack does not erase the advantage of moving sooner or knowing the final form before investing resources.
Choose Wurmple when flexibility matters more than control
Wurmple makes sense when it is your version’s early Bug, when its 45 Attack and 30 Special Defense suit the first few battles, or when either Beautifly or Dustox would improve your team. The trade-off is that you must evaluate the branch you receive rather than selecting it in advance.
What are the most common comparison mistakes?
- Comparing encounter locations as if they were universal: Kanto and Hoenn listings do not prove simultaneous availability.
- Calling the Wurmple branch a fresh random roll: The player-facing result is effectively random, but the references describe an underlying personality-related value or encryption constant.
- Using current stats for every generation: Butterfree’s and Beautifly’s listed Special Attack values have explicit historical qualifiers.
- Confusing base stats with battle stats: Species base stats are not the same as the numbers shown on an individual Pokémon’s summary screen.
- Treating a ten-point total difference as a verdict: Dustox’s currently listed 385 total does not by itself determine usefulness in a particular party.
- Using trading-card numbers to judge the video game: Card HP and attacks belong to a separate rules system.
How is the trading-card comparison different?
Physical Pokémon Trading Card Game entries confirm that both species have cards, but card HP, attacks and set numbers do not measure a species’ strength in the console or handheld games. The official TCG database identifies Wurmple Lost Origin 6/196 and Caterpie Sun & Moon 1/149 as exact card search terms. Those records are useful for collectors; they are not evidence that Wurmple or Caterpie is the better in-game choice.

How was this ranking chosen?
The ranking weighs the factors that determine an early-game decision: whether the species is available in the reader’s version, how predictable the evolution path is, the identical 195-point first-stage total and its stat distribution, final typing, listed abilities, documented utility moves, and the role each final form can fill. It does not use player-preference percentages, win-rate claims or hands-on performance results. Where values differ by generation, the comparison keeps the source’s qualifier instead of presenting one number as timeless.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Caterpie and Wurmple appear in the same Pokémon games?
Not necessarily. The cited listings associate Caterpie with Kanto games and Wurmple with Hoenn games, so you must check the encounter table for the exact title rather than assuming both are available together.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy do different websites show different Special Attack numbers for Butterfree or Beautifly?
The figures can be generation-specific species data. The current listing gives Butterfree 90 and Beautifly 100, while it lists 80 for Butterfree in Generations 2–5 and 90 for Beautifly in Generations 3–5; those historical qualifiers should stay attached to the numbers.
Can changing the in-game clock force Wurmple to become Beautifly?
There is no supported time-of-day method in the cited references. Wurmple’s outcome is tied to an underlying personality-related value, so the player should treat the branch as effectively random rather than as a clock-based choice.
Are the Wurmple and Caterpie trading cards useful for deciding the video-game winner?
No. The official database entries identify cards such as Wurmple Lost Origin 6/196 and Caterpie Sun & Moon 1/149, but TCG HP and attacks use a separate ruleset and do not translate into video-game base stats or battle performance.
