“ The program can’t start because xactengine2_0.dll is missing from your computer.” You may also see “xactengine2_0.dll was not found,” “Failed to load xactengine2_0.dll,” or “Failed to init XACT.”
The 60-second answer
xactengine2_0.dll is a Microsoft XACT audio-engine runtime used by older Windows games and applications. The safest first fix is to download Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010), extract it, run DXSETUP.exe, restart Windows, and launch the game again.

Do not download the DLL by itself from a random DLL website. The file may have the wrong architecture, be damaged or modified, or fail because another legacy dependency is missing. The official DirectX package installs the related side-by-side components together.

XACT means Xbox Audio Cross Platform Tool. It was part of Microsoft’s legacy DirectX SDK and provided audio functionality used by older games. Microsoft no longer supports XACT for new Windows development, but existing games can still require its runtime.

This is not a core modern Windows component and it is not part of the DirectX 12 feature set. Installing or updating DirectX 12 does not necessarily install older XACT, XAudio 2.7, D3DX, or related side-by-side libraries.
The file may be installed into a Windows directory or alongside a game, depending on how that application loads its dependencies. Its location alone does not prove that it is a permanent core Windows system file.
Why the error appears
The most likely causes are:
- The legacy DirectX runtime was never installed.
- The game installation is incomplete or corrupted.
- A 32-bit game is loading the wrong architecture or has another missing dependency.
- Antivirus software quarantined or deleted the runtime.
- Windows N is missing media components required by the game.
- Windows component files are damaged.
- The DLL exists but is corrupt, mismatched, or cannot load one of its dependencies.
The exact game cannot be identified from the filename alone. If only one title fails, repair that title before changing Windows system files.

Fix 1: Install Microsoft’s legacy DirectX runtime
This is the most likely solution for a clean Windows installation or an older game installed without its prerequisites.
- Open Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) page.
- Download
directx_Jun2010_redist.exe. - Open the downloaded file.
- When asked where to extract the files, choose a temporary folder such as
C:DirectXTemp. - Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Right-click
DXSETUP.exeand select Run as administrator. - Accept the license terms and let setup install the components.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the affected game or application.
The package installs legacy side-by-side DirectX components, including XACT, XAudio 2.7, XInput 1.3, and D3DX libraries. It does not replace the DirectX version shown by dxdiag.
How to tell whether it worked
The game should start without the missing-DLL message. If the error changes to a different missing DLL, the XACT runtime was likely found and the application has moved to its next missing dependency. Run the same official installer rather than downloading that second DLL separately.
If DXSETUP.exe fails, note the exact message and inspect the DirectX setup log in the extracted temporary folder. Do not overwrite an existing DLL manually.

Fix 2: Repair the game’s installation
If the runtime is installed but only one game still fails, the game’s own files are the next priority.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the scan to finish, then launch the game.
Other launchers
Look for a menu named Repair, Verify, Scan and repair, or Verify integrity in the game’s library or installation settings. Use the launcher’s repair function before reinstalling the entire title.
If the game includes its own DirectX redistributable in an installer or support folder, use that official copy after verifying the game files. The game may expect a particular set of legacy components.
If repair does not help, uninstall the game, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the publisher’s official installer or the launcher that owns the game. Back up saved games first if they are not synchronized.
Fix 3: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 64-bit version of Windows can run both 64-bit and 32-bit programs. Many older games are 32-bit, so installing only a 64-bit copy of a runtime may not solve the problem.
The June 2010 redistributable is preferable because it supplies the legacy components through Microsoft’s installer instead of requiring you to guess which individual file and architecture are needed.
Do not use the simplistic rule that System32 always means 32-bit. On 64-bit Windows, System32 conventionally contains 64-bit system binaries, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system binaries. Windows also searches the application directory when loading DLL dependencies.

Do not manually copy xactengine2_0.dll into System32 or SysWOW64. A game may correctly use an application-local copy, but the right way to restore that copy is through the game’s installer or repair function.

- Note the full path shown in the error, if one appears.
- Check the game’s installation folder.
- Confirm whether the game executable is 32-bit or 64-bit using the publisher’s documentation or a trusted file-properties utility.
- Install the official legacy runtime and repair the game rather than mixing DLLs from separate sources.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a runtime file after an installation or update.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry matching the game, its installer, or the DirectX runtime.
- Do not restore a file simply because its name matches the error.
- Restore it only when it came from Microsoft’s runtime installer or the game’s verified official installation.
- Update Windows Security and run a scan.
If the file came from an unofficial DLL download, delete it instead of restoring it. Reinstall the runtime from Microsoft and repair the game.
Fix 5: Install Media Feature Pack on Windows N
Windows 10 and Windows 11 N editions omit certain media technologies. This is a special case, not the general fix for every xactengine2_0.dll error.
On Windows 11 N:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Optional features.
- Choose View features.
- Search for Media Feature Pack.
- Select it and choose Next, then Install.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the June 2010 DirectX installer again if the game still fails.

Do not install Media Feature Pack on an ordinary Windows edition expecting it to replace the legacy DirectX runtime. Install the Microsoft DirectX package first.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components
Use this step when several Windows components are malfunctioning, the official runtime cannot install, or the system appears to have broader corruption. It is not the first choice for a single game-specific error.

- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Run
DXSETUP.exeagain and test the game.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. The commands repair Windows servicing and protected system files; they do not replace the game’s own installation files.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting difficult. Reinstalling the affected game remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that game’s installation.
Fix 7: Check drivers only when the symptom points to them
A display or audio driver is not normally the owner of xactengine2_0.dll, so driver replacement is not a primary fix. Consider it when the game also crashes with audio or graphics errors, Device Manager reports a problem, or the failure began after a driver change.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected audio device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Repeat the check under Display adapters if the game also reports graphics problems.
Do not remove a working device driver merely because the DLL error names an audio engine. Do not run:
regsvr32 xactengine2_0.dll
as a routine repair. This DLL is a runtime library, not normally a COM or ActiveX component that users register manually. A registration error does not show that registration is required.
If you already ran regsvr32 and received an error, undo nothing. Install the official runtime and repair the game instead.
If the message says “not designed to run on Windows”
A message such as “xactengine2_0.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error” usually indicates corruption, a wrong-architecture binary, or a missing dependency. It does not simply mean that the file is absent.
Use this order:
- Remove any manually downloaded copy.
- Check antivirus quarantine.
- Run the game launcher’s repair or verification function.
- Install the Microsoft June 2010 runtime.
- Run DISM and SFC if other Windows components also fail.
- Reinstall the game if only that title remains affected.
If the error names a path under the game folder, repair the game first. If it names a Windows directory and multiple programs fail, investigate Windows corruption rather than copying another DLL over the existing one.

Is xactengine2_0.dll part of Windows or DirectX?
It is associated with Microsoft XACT, a legacy DirectX SDK technology. It is not a core modern DirectX 12 component. Older games can still need it.

Do I need both x86 and x64 versions?
You need the architecture required by the program. Because many older games are 32-bit and modern Windows can run both architectures, the official June 2010 redistributable is safer than guessing or copying individual files.
Should I copy the DLL into System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Use Microsoft’s installer or the game’s official repair process. Manual copying can leave the game with the wrong version or architecture and can hide a missing dependency.
Can DirectX 12 fix this error?
Not necessarily. DirectX 12 does not automatically provide every legacy side-by-side component used by older games.
Is the file’s displayed version or size authoritative?
Not by itself. Microsoft’s public download page does not establish a universal per-file version, bitness, size, or hash for every installation path. Trust a known-good Microsoft-installed copy or the game’s verified files.
When should I use System Restore?
Use it only if the problem began after a clearly identifiable system or software change and a suitable restore point exists. It is a fallback, not the normal first repair.

Record the exact error text, the executable that produces it, the full path shown in the message, whether Windows is N, whether the game is 32-bit or 64-bit, the result of launcher verification, and any DirectX setup-log error. This distinguishes a missing runtime from a damaged game, blocked file, wrong architecture, or missing dependency.
