Xbox Action for Google Assistant lets you link a supported Xbox to Google Home, then use Google Assistant voice commands to control console power, launch games and apps, manage video playback, record a game clip, adjust volume, mute audio, and open Settings. To set it up, link Xbox in the Google Home app with the Microsoft account used on the console, enable digital assistants on Xbox, and set its power mode to Instant-on. A separate Assistant speaker or display is optional: the Google Home app also provides touch controls where supported.
What is Xbox Action for Google Assistant?
Xbox Action is the Google Assistant integration for controlling an Xbox through voice. After you link the console to Google Home, you can address commands to the console name shown in the app. Depending on the command, Assistant can turn the console on or off, launch a game or app, control playback, record a clip, change volume, mute, or open Settings.

Google announced a beta on September 26, 2019; Microsoft announced public availability for Xbox One customers in regions where Google Assistant was supported on November 15, 2019, with English available at launch. In February 2023, Xbox added Google Home touch controls, so the integration is not limited to spoken commands.
Google’s current help page continues to document Xbox linking and voice commands. Xbox has also documented the Google Home remote controls. That establishes the feature as currently documented, not a guarantee that every command is available in every region, on every console model, or indefinitely.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Which Xbox consoles are supported?
Google explicitly lists Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One S All-Digital Edition, and Xbox One X in its help instructions. Xbox’s 2023 announcement describes Google Home remote functionality more broadly as working with an Xbox console, but does not provide a separate, explicit Xbox Series X|S model list.
If you have a Series X or Series S, do not treat Google’s Xbox One list as confirmation for that model. Check whether Xbox appears under Works with Google Home in your current Google Home app and whether the console exposes the required assistant and power settings. Model support can also depend on current software and region.
What do I need before linking Xbox?
Have the Google Home app, access to the Microsoft account used with the Xbox, and access to the console’s settings. Google documents two console-side requirements: digital assistants must be enabled, and the power mode must be set to Instant-on.
- Google Home app: Use it to add the Xbox service, authorize the Microsoft account, assign a room, and access touch controls where supported.
- Microsoft account: Sign in with the account associated with the console you intend to link.
- Xbox settings: Enable digital assistants and select Instant-on power mode as directed by Google’s setup.
- Assistant device, optional: A Google Assistant-enabled speaker or display is needed for hands-free voice control from that device, but Google says a separate speaker or display is not required to complete linking. The phone app can also offer touch controls.
Instant-on is a power-mode requirement in Google’s documented setup, not merely a naming preference. If the console is in a different power mode, address that requirement before troubleshooting the account link or a voice command.

How do I connect my Xbox to Google Assistant?
Link the service from Google Home, authorize the Microsoft account, and assign the console to a room. The menu path Google gives is Home > Add > Device > Works with Google Home.
- Prepare the Xbox. On the console, enable digital assistants and set its power mode to Instant-on.
- Open Google Home. Use the latest version of the app and choose Home > Add > Device > Works with Google Home.
- Find Xbox. Search for Xbox in the list of services and select it.
- Link your account. Follow Microsoft’s account-linking flow and sign in with the Microsoft account used on the Xbox.
- Assign the console to a room. Complete the room selection for each console you link.
- Finish and check the device name. Tap Done. Use the console’s name as displayed in Google Home when directing commands to it.
If you link more than one console, room assignment and clear device names help you address the intended console. For example, use the exact name shown in the app rather than assuming that simply saying “Xbox” will identify the right one.
What commands work with Xbox and Google Assistant?
Use the console’s Google Home name in commands that target a specific device. Google’s current command examples cover power, launching games and apps, playback, recording a clip, volume, mute, and Settings.
| Task | Example command |
|---|---|
| Turn the console on or off | “Hey Google, turn on or off [console name].” |
| Launch an app | “Hey Google, launch [app name] on [console name].” |
| Launch a game | “Hey Google, play [game name] on [console name].” |
| Record a game clip | “Hey Google, record that on [console name].” |
| Pause or resume playback | “Hey Google, pause on [console name].” or “Hey Google, resume on [console name].” |
| Skip to another episode | “Hey Google, next episode on [console name].” |
| Adjust audio | “Hey Google, volume up on [console name].” or “Hey Google, mute on [console name].” |
| Open console settings | “Hey Google, open Settings on [console name].” |
Google’s 2019 launch announcement also gave “Hey Google, take a screenshot on Xbox” and “Hey Google, open Netflix on Xbox” as examples. Those are historical launch examples; Google’s current help command table emphasizes recording clips rather than screenshots. A screenshot example from 2019 should not be read as a promise that the command remains available or behaves identically today.

Can Google Home be used as an Xbox remote?
Yes. Xbox added touch controls in the Google Home app in February 2023. Xbox described controls for console power, directional navigation, Home and Back, play and pause, skip and previous, volume, mute, and game-clip recording.
This is different from speaking to a Google Assistant speaker: the Home app’s remote is a touch interface on the phone. It is useful when you want to navigate or control media without speaking, or when you do not have a separate Assistant speaker or display. The available controls may depend on console support and current app or software behavior.

Google Home touch controls are a remote surface, not evidence that every physical controller function is available in the app. The announced set is focused on navigation, power, media, audio, and clip recording.
Does a Google Assistant speaker have to be in the room?
No separate smart speaker or display is required to link Xbox, and the Google Home app itself exposes touch controls where supported. For hands-free voice control, however, you need an Assistant-enabled device that can hear the request, such as a supported speaker, display, or Android mobile device.

Google’s 2019 beta announcement specifically described voice control through an Assistant-enabled smart speaker, smart display, or Android mobile device. It named Google Nest Hub Max as an example of a compatible display. The phone app’s role in setup and touch control should not be confused with a guarantee that every phone configuration supports every voice command.
What should I check if setup or a command does not work?
Start with the documented requirements and the exact console name rather than assuming a command failure means the service has been discontinued. The available official guidance describes setup and supported command categories, but does not publish a comprehensive troubleshooting matrix or guarantee for every device, region, or phrase.

- Confirm that you are in Works with Google Home and search for Xbox among the services.
- Check that you are using the Google Home app and can complete Microsoft’s account-linking flow.
- Confirm the console is one of the models Google explicitly lists, or treat support for other models as unconfirmed until the service and console settings are available to you.
If linking does not complete
- Verify that you signed in with the Microsoft account used on the Xbox.
- Return to the setup flow and confirm that each console has a room assignment before tapping Done.
- Check console settings for digital assistants and the Instant-on power mode required in Google’s setup.
If a voice command targets the wrong console or is not understood
- Say the exact device name shown in Google Home, especially if you have multiple consoles.
- Try a command from Google’s documented categories, such as power, app launch, pause, volume, or mute, instead of assuming every natural-language variation is supported.
- For a feature with an older example, such as taking a screenshot, distinguish that 2019 example from Google’s current command list.
Google announced in January 2024 that it was removing some underused Assistant features, but its announcement did not name Xbox Action as discontinued. The ongoing Google help instructions and Xbox’s documented 2023 expansion support describing Xbox integration as documented, while availability and command behavior should still be checked in the user’s app and console.

Can I use Xbox Action if I do not own a Google Nest speaker?
Yes. Google Home can handle linking and may provide touch-remote controls without a separate smart speaker. For voice commands, use an Assistant-enabled device such as an Android mobile device, speaker, or display.

Can I link more than one Xbox to Google Home?
Google’s setup asks you to assign each console to a room, which accommodates a setup involving multiple consoles. Give them distinct names in Google Home so spoken requests can identify the intended device.
Does Xbox Action work in every country and language?
Microsoft’s November 2019 public-availability announcement limited availability to countries where Google Assistant was supported and said English was available at launch. That launch statement does not establish present-day language or country coverage, so check availability in your region’s current Google Home app.
Can I use Google Assistant to start a game while the Xbox is off?
Google’s 2019 launch announcement said a request to launch a game could automatically turn on the Xbox One and load the game. That is a launch-era description; current behavior can depend on the linked console, settings, region, and service availability.
