Xbox Series X|S plays most Xbox One games and a selected catalogue of Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. Compatibility is free for games you already own, but it is determined title by title. Xbox Series X has a disc drive for supported physical games; Xbox Series S is digital-only and cannot use game discs. A compatible game may also receive higher resolution, faster frame rates, improved textures, HDR or Auto HDR, although enhancements vary by title and require a download.
What Xbox backward compatibility means
Backward compatibility lets a newer Xbox run games released for an earlier Xbox generation. On Xbox Series X|S, the system supports most Xbox One games and a curated catalogue of Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles. It does not make every game from those generations playable. Each title must be included in the supported catalogue, and the rules differ according to the game’s generation, your ownership format and the console model you use.

The feature does not normally require a separate backward-compatibility purchase. If you own a compatible digital game, you can install it on a supported console. If you own a compatible disc, the disc can act as your license on Xbox One or Xbox Series X. Series S has no optical drive, so a physical copy cannot be used on that console.
Which generations work on Xbox Series X|S?
Xbox One games
Most Xbox One games run on Xbox Series X|S. Digital Xbox One purchases associated with your account can appear in the console’s Ready to Install section when the title is supported. Installation downloads the game to the console’s internal storage or an expansion device that supports the title.

For a physical Xbox One game, insert the disc into Xbox Series X. The console downloads the playable software to its storage, but the disc must remain in the drive whenever you play because it verifies ownership. Series S cannot use this process because it has no disc drive.
Xbox 360 games
Only selected Xbox 360 games are backward compatible. A game that worked on the original Xbox 360 is not automatically supported on Xbox One or Series X|S. Check the current official Xbox backward-compatibility catalogue for the exact title before buying a disc or expecting a digital download.
Supported Xbox 360 games can be owned digitally or, where the title and disc are supported, physically. On Series X, insert the disc and allow the console to download the compatible version. The disc remains necessary for launching the game. On Series S, you need a supported digital entitlement; a 360 disc cannot be used.
Original Xbox games
Original Xbox support is also limited to a selected catalogue. These releases run as emulated versions of the original games rather than as modern remasters. Emulation can improve how a game displays on newer hardware, but it does not rewrite the original game’s content or automatically restore services that have been discontinued.
Original Xbox discs can work on Xbox Series X only when the specific title is in the supported catalogue. Series S accepts only digital licenses. Original Xbox saves do not transfer directly to Xbox One or Series X|S, so an old save stored on the original console should not be treated as portable to a new system.

Series X and Series S: the ownership differences
| Question | Xbox Series X | Xbox Series S |
|---|---|---|
| Digital backward-compatible games | Supported digital titles can be downloaded from the account’s library or Ready to Install section. | Supported digital titles can be downloaded from the account’s library or Ready to Install section. |
| Supported Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox discs | Can be used when the individual title is supported; the console downloads the game and the disc must stay inserted while playing. | Cannot be used because the console has no disc drive. |
| Extra backward-compatibility fee | No extra fee for a compatible game you already own. | No extra fee for a compatible digital game you already own. |
| Required license for a physical copy | The inserted disc serves as the license after installation. | A digital license is required. |
This makes the model choice important if your library is mostly physical. A Series X can preserve access to supported discs, while moving that same collection to Series S requires buying or otherwise obtaining digital entitlements for the supported titles.
How to install a compatible game
Digital ownership
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that owns the game.
- Open My games & apps and select Full library.
- Choose Ready to Install and look for the compatible title.
- Select the game and start the download. The console may download a current compatible package rather than the exact files used by the older console.
- Wait for installation and any required update to finish before launching.
The same account-based process applies on Series X and Series S. If a title does not appear, confirm that you are using the purchasing account and that the game is in the current supported catalogue. Ownership alone cannot make an unsupported title appear.

Physical ownership on Series X
- Connect the console to the internet and sign in.
- Insert the supported Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox disc.
- Accept the installation prompt and allow the console to download the compatible game files.
- Keep the original disc in the drive whenever you play.
The disc is not copied into a transferable digital license merely because the game has been installed. Removing it, using a different account without the license or trying the disc on Series S will prevent normal disc-based access.
What improvements can a backward-compatible game receive?
Xbox says selected backward-compatible titles can gain higher resolution, faster frame rates, improved textures, HDR or Auto HDR. These are title-specific features, not a guarantee for every game in the catalogue. A game may receive one enhancement, several, or none beyond its ability to run on the newer console.
Enhancements are delivered through a download, including when your original ownership is a disc. The installed package may therefore be larger than the data on the original media. Display results also depend on the game, the console model and the television or monitor you connect.

Xbox’s official catalogue says that more than 500,000 hours were spent testing titles and meeting quality standards for Xbox Series X|S gameplay. That figure describes the catalogue-wide testing effort cited by Xbox, not a performance measurement for any individual game.

Save data, achievements and online features
Saves from Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S
Saves made on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S can transfer to other consoles in those families through the cloud. Sign in with the same account, allow the console to synchronize, and the save can be available on the second system after the compatible game is installed. Cloud synchronization is not the same as copying an original Xbox save directly to a modern console.
Original Xbox saves
Original Xbox saves do not transfer directly to Xbox One or Series X|S. A save stored on an original Xbox should therefore be treated as separate from a modern-console save. Starting the backward-compatible version may require beginning a new game.
Achievements
Original Xbox games do not have Xbox achievements in the backward-compatibility program. Do not assume that playing an emulated original release will add a new achievement list to your profile.
Multiplayer and services
Original Xbox Live online multiplayer and in-game marketplaces are unavailable through backward compatibility. A game can still support offline co-op, local multiplayer or system-link play when those modes were part of the original release and the specific compatible version preserves them. Online functionality should be checked for the individual title rather than inferred from its original packaging.

The changing “Your Discs. Now Also Digital.” test
On August 26, 2026, Xbox Wire announced an Xbox Insider test called “Your Discs. Now Also Digital.” In the test, a player can insert a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X and launch the game to claim a digital entitlement. Xbox said the test would begin with thousands of titles and expand over time, but also said that not every title would be available at launch.
This is a changing Insider feature, not a universal rule for every disc. Eligibility can change during the test, and the announcement does not make unsupported discs compatible. Verify the current title list and participation requirements before relying on the feature. Series S remains dependent on digital ownership because it cannot read a disc.
A practical compatibility check before you buy or install
- Identify the game’s original generation. Label it as Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox. A later console does not imply automatic support for the two older generations.
- Check the official backward-compatibility catalogue. Confirm the exact edition or title, because support is selected rather than universal.
- Match the license to the console. Digital ownership works on both Series models; supported discs require Series X.
- Check enhancement expectations. Look for the title’s listed support for frame-rate, resolution, texture, HDR or Auto HDR improvements. Do not assume every enhancement applies.
- Plan your save transfer. Xbox One and Series saves can synchronize through the cloud; original Xbox saves do not transfer directly.
- Confirm the modes you need. Original Xbox online multiplayer and in-game marketplaces are unavailable, while supported offline and local modes may remain.
- Allow for the download. Disc ownership still requires downloading the compatible game package and updates before play.
Common problems and the correct fix
The game does not appear in Ready to Install
Check that you are signed in to the account that owns the digital license, then search the full library again. If the title is not in the current catalogue, no library setting can add compatibility. For a disc, use the supported-disc process on Series X instead of expecting a digital listing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe console accepts the disc but will not start the game
Confirm that the disc’s exact title is supported and that you are using Xbox Series X. Let the compatibility download complete, install available updates and leave the disc inserted. A disc from an unsupported game cannot be converted by reinstalling it.

A physical collection will not work on Series S
This is a hardware limitation, not an installation error. Series S has no disc drive. You need a digital license for each supported title you want to play.
The old save is missing
Use cloud synchronization for saves created on Xbox One or Series X|S and sign in with the same account on both consoles. An original Xbox save does not transfer directly, so the missing file cannot be recovered through normal modern-console synchronization.
Online play or a marketplace is unavailable
For original Xbox games, this is an expected limitation of the backward-compatibility service: original Xbox Live multiplayer and in-game marketplaces are unavailable. Try the supported offline, local multiplayer or system-link options if the game included them.
Does backward compatibility cost extra?
There is no extra backward-compatibility charge for a compatible game you already own. The cost question is instead about the license you have and the hardware that can read it. A supported digital game can be installed on either Series model. A supported physical game can be used on Series X, but Series S requires a digital entitlement because it cannot accept discs.
Downloading the compatible version and updates uses storage and an internet connection, even when the original purchase was a disc. That installation requirement is separate from any purchase price and does not turn an unsupported title into a supported one.
Bottom line for choosing a new Xbox
Choose Series X if your backward-compatible library includes supported Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox discs. Choose Series S if your collection is digital or you are prepared to obtain digital licenses, since no physical disc can be used. In either case, verify the exact title in the current catalogue, expect game-specific enhancements rather than blanket upgrades, and plan separately for save, achievement and online-service limitations.
