Yes, Xbox Cloud Gaming supports keyboard and mouse—but Microsoft did not introduce the feature for the first time in 2026, and it does not work across the entire cloud library. Microsoft was already documenting support for select cloud games in March 2025. Whether you can play with PC controls depends primarily on the individual title, your device, your browser or app, and your Game Pass plan or game ownership.
For the most reliable setup, connect a physical keyboard and mouse to a Windows PC, open Xbox Cloud Gaming in a supported browser, and launch a game listed as compatible. A keyboard working in the Xbox interface does not prove that the streamed game accepts keyboard-and-mouse gameplay.

The short answer
- Does Xbox Cloud Gaming support keyboard and mouse? Yes, but only in selected games.
- Is this a new 2026 feature? No. Microsoft discussed support for select cloud titles in March 2025.
- Does it work with every cloud game? No. Native input support must be implemented and enabled by the game.
- What is the best setup? A Windows PC with a wired USB keyboard and mouse and a supported browser or Xbox app.
- What is the biggest limitation? Cloud streaming adds network latency, and the compatible-game list can change by title, platform, region, and plan.
Microsoft is expanding an existing capability, not switching it on for every game
Microsoft’s March 2025 developer material identified mouse-and-keyboard support for select Xbox Cloud Gaming titles. Microsoft explained that games which support mouse and keyboard on Xbox can generally support those inputs through Xbox Cloud Gaming, provided the developer has implemented the relevant functionality correctly.
That distinction matters. Cloud streaming sends a video feed to your device and returns your input to the game running remotely. It does not automatically turn a controller-only Xbox game into a keyboard-and-mouse game. A title must recognize the devices and handle actions such as movement, camera control, aiming, and key bindings.

So “Microsoft is finally bringing support” is misleading if it suggests a first-time 2026 launch. “Finally” better describes how long players have been asking for the feature. By 2026, the important questions are which games support it, where it works, and how consistently the experience behaves across devices.
Check the game before checking the accessory
The authoritative starting point is Xbox’s current mouse-and-keyboard game list, together with the individual game page and the availability information shown for your account and region. Older articles, forum posts, and the fact that a game has a PC version are not enough.
A game being playable through the cloud only means that it can be streamed. It does not mean that keyboard and mouse are accepted. Even a title that supports these peripherals in its locally installed Xbox version may behave differently in its cloud version if the relevant build, metadata, or input support differs.
Microsoft’s developer guidance makes supported Xbox keyboard-and-mouse input the strongest indicator, but it is not a permanent guarantee. Game features, catalogs, regions, plans, and supported platforms can change.
Three kinds of “keyboard support”
1. Native keyboard-and-mouse gameplay
This is the real feature. The streamed Xbox game receives keyboard and mouse input as gameplay controls. Movement, camera control, aiming, menus, and bindings can work according to the game’s implementation. Some games also replace controller prompts with keyboard keys or mouse buttons, although prompt behavior is not always perfect.
2. Controller emulation
Unofficial remappers and browser extensions can translate keyboard and mouse actions into virtual gamepad commands. That is not equivalent to native support. A virtual controller may provide limited bindings, poor camera movement, imprecise aiming, or accessibility and policy concerns. It can also stop working after a browser or Xbox update.

Do not describe a remapping workaround as official Xbox Cloud Gaming keyboard-and-mouse support, and rule out native compatibility before considering one.

A keyboard may work for searching, entering text, navigating the Xbox interface, or controlling the browser while the game itself remains controller-only. Likewise, a desktop cursor moving normally does not prove that the stream has captured the mouse for camera control.
How to use a keyboard and mouse with Xbox Cloud Gaming
Browser method
- Connect the keyboard and mouse before starting the stream. Wired USB devices are the simplest baseline for troubleshooting.
- Open a supported browser such as Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, or Safari.
- Go to xbox.com/play and sign in with the Microsoft account that has the eligible subscription or game.
- Select a title confirmed to support keyboard and mouse.
- Start the stream and click inside the game window so it can capture keyboard and mouse focus.
- Test movement, camera control, and several game actions—not just text entry or menu navigation.
If the title shows controller prompts and ignores the peripherals, stop treating the problem as a generic Xbox Cloud Gaming setting. Confirm that the specific game supports native input, then test another confirmed compatible title.
Windows PC and Xbox app
Windows is the most natural platform for this feature. Use the current Xbox app or Microsoft-supported cloud-gaming route, keep Windows and the app updated, connect the peripherals before launching the stream, and select a compatible game.
Microsoft’s Xbox PC information lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 version 22H2 or higher and 150 MB of app storage for the Xbox PC app. Individual games and streaming sessions have their own requirements. If input fails in the app, test the same title in a supported browser. That helps identify whether the problem is app-specific or title-specific.

If the installed Xbox version accepts keyboard and mouse but the cloud version does not, the likely issue is the title or cloud build—not necessarily your keyboard or console.
Which devices work best?
| Device | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Windows PC | Best overall option. Use a supported browser or Xbox app with USB or Bluetooth peripherals. |
| Mac | Open Xbox.com/play in Safari or another supported browser. Browser focus, pointer capture, permissions, and latency can vary. |
| Chromebook | Cloud gaming can run through a compatible browser, but keyboard-and-mouse behavior remains title- and browser-dependent. |
| Steam Deck and Linux handhelds | Xbox Cloud Gaming can be accessed through a browser configuration. Microsoft says Edge on SteamOS is not officially supported and is not actively maintained, so treat this as a workaround rather than a fully supported Xbox app experience. |
| Xbox consoles | Compatible titles may accept connected peripherals, but cloud play does not make every streamed game keyboard-compatible. |
| Phones and tablets | Physical input depends on USB, Bluetooth, the operating system, and the browser or app. Touch support is a separate feature. |
| Smart TVs and Fire TV | Device support, Bluetooth pairing, USB access, and pointer capture vary. A hub or separate streaming device may be needed. |
| Meta Quest and other supported devices | Cloud access may be available, but keyboard-and-mouse practicality is more dependent on the specific hardware and app path. |
Microsoft’s current cloud-gaming page lists supported devices including Windows PCs, Apple and Android devices, Xbox consoles, select LG and Samsung TVs, Amazon Fire TV, select Meta Quest headsets, and browsers. Availability and feature support vary by region, platform, title, and plan.
Subscription and ownership requirements
Most cloud-playable games require an Xbox subscription with cloud access. On the current US Xbox cloud page, Microsoft lists cloud access with Game Pass Essential, Premium, and Ultimate, with different catalogs and streaming benefits. Plan names, pricing, availability, and benefits vary by region and can change.

- Selected free-to-play games may be streamable with a free Microsoft account in supported regions.
- Some games you own or buy can be streamed when they are eligible for cloud play.
- A Game Pass subscription does not make every Xbox or PC catalog title cloud-playable.
- PC Game Pass is primarily a Windows PC installation subscription. Do not buy it specifically for console-cloud access without confirming the current plan, game, and region rules.
Before subscribing, check the exact title in the Xbox Cloud Gaming catalog. A PC Game Pass subscriber may be able to install a PC version and use keyboard and mouse locally even when the corresponding console version is not available for cloud streaming.
Hardware and connection requirements
You need a compatible device, a supported browser or app, a physical keyboard and mouse, an eligible game, an Xbox account, and qualifying cloud access unless the title is an eligible free-to-play game.
Microsoft recommends at least 10 Mbps download speed and notes that some devices may require 20 Mbps for the best quality. It also recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Those figures are not a promise of good mouse play: latency, jitter, packet loss, Wi-Fi congestion, browser performance, and distance from the cloud region can matter more than raw download speed.

Both switch types are factory-lubricated for enhanced stability and optimized acoustics. Features per-key RGB lighting.
- Optimized for Gaming, Streaming, and Daily Work: Pre-programmed hotkeys (F1-F5) provide convenient control over the Xbox Game Bar and recording functions. A multi-function wheel allows for intuitive media and lighting adjustments. All keys are fully macro-programmable for advanced customization.
For a clean baseline, use Ethernet where possible, or stable 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and test with a wired USB keyboard and mouse. A high-DPI mouse cannot remove streaming latency, and Bluetooth adds another possible source of pairing or power-saving problems.

Troubleshooting guide
The keyboard works in menus but not during gameplay
The game may not support native keyboard-and-mouse gameplay, the stream may not have captured focus, or the cloud version may differ from the installed version.
- Click inside the game window.
- Restart the stream with the peripherals already connected.
- Try Edge or Chrome on a supported Windows setup.
- Test a second game confirmed on the official list.
- Check the individual Xbox game page and current compatibility information.
The mouse moves the desktop pointer instead of the camera
This usually indicates missing native mouse support, failed pointer capture, or a browser or app limitation. Normal desktop cursor movement is not evidence that the game supports mouse aiming. Click into the stream, try another supported browser, and test a known-compatible title.
Controller prompts remain on screen
This can mean keyboard input is not active, but some games do not dynamically change every prompt. Test actual movement and actions rather than relying only on icons. If no gameplay input works, verify title support.
Aiming feels delayed or inaccurate
Native keyboard-and-mouse support cannot remove cloud-streaming latency. Use Ethernet or strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi, close bandwidth-heavy apps, reduce local display processing where possible, and try a lower resolution or quality setting if available. Comparing the same title with a local installation can help distinguish network latency from an input-mapping problem.
A listed game still does not work
Support may have changed, differ by region or platform, or be affected by a temporary game regression. Also check that the peripherals are connected to the device running the stream—for example, the TV rather than the laptop can be the wrong endpoint.

Record the title, region, device, browser or app version, and exact failure before contacting Xbox Support or using applicable Insider feedback channels.
Is cloud gaming with keyboard and mouse worth using?
| Criterion | Favorable sign | Warning |
|---|---|---|
| Game support | The exact title is explicitly marked as compatible. | “Playable in the cloud” alone is insufficient. |
| Device | Windows PC with a supported browser or app. | TV, VR, Linux, and handheld setups can be less predictable. |
| Network | Ethernet or stable 5 GHz Wi-Fi with low latency. | High download speed cannot compensate for high ping or packet loss. |
| Game type | Strategy, simulation, management, turn-based, and slower games are generally more forgiving. | Competitive shooters are especially sensitive to latency and pointer behavior. |
| Hardware | Wired USB devices for a reliable baseline. | Bluetooth pairing and hubs add failure points. |
Cloud play is convenient when you want to avoid downloads, move between devices, and use Xbox saves. It is less suitable when low-latency aiming, high refresh rates, mods, offline access, or predictable performance matter most.
Cloud gaming versus the alternatives
Local PC installation
A local PC version is usually the better choice for competitive play, low-latency mouse aiming, mods, offline access, and stable high-refresh-rate performance. The trade-off is storage, downloads, a compatible Windows PC, and the correct PC license or subscription. PC Game Pass provides access to a PC catalog through the Xbox app, but each game has its own requirements and launcher restrictions.
Installed Xbox games
Playing an installed Xbox game avoids cloud-streaming latency and is a good option for users who already own a console. Keyboard-and-mouse support still varies by title, so local installation does not make every game compatible.
PC-focused cloud services
Services such as GeForce NOW may be a better fit when you want to stream conventional PC versions with keyboard-and-mouse support. However, they use different catalogs, ownership rules, publisher agreements, and plan restrictions. They are not a universal replacement for Xbox Cloud Gaming’s console catalog and Xbox save ecosystem.
Bottom line
Keyboard and mouse are real input options in Xbox Cloud Gaming, but only for selected games with native support. Microsoft had already documented the capability in March 2025, so 2026 coverage should focus on compatibility and availability rather than presenting it as a brand-new switch for the entire service.
Before paying for a subscription or buying accessories, check the exact game on Xbox’s current mouse-and-keyboard list. If it is supported, a Windows PC, supported browser, wired peripherals, and a stable low-latency connection offer the clearest path. If it is not supported, no ordinary Xbox Cloud Gaming setting will turn the streamed console version into a native PC-control experience.
