Xbox Cloud Gaming can use several gigabytes of data per hour. Planning around a sustained stream rate gives roughly 3.6 GB per hour at 8 Mbps, 6.75 GB at 15 Mbps, 9 GB at 20 Mbps, and as much as 13.5 GB at 30 Mbps. Those are planning calculations, not a single official Xbox allowance: the service changes its bitrate with network conditions, device, image quality and game activity. A historical 720p Android test averaged about 2.36 GB per hour, showing why real measurements can be lower than a maximum-rate estimate.
For a capped mobile or home plan, monitor one real session and budget conservatively. Xbox lists 10 Mbps for mobile devices and 20 Mbps for consoles, PCs and tablets; Xbox Wire recommends at least 20 Mbps for stable play.

How much data does Xbox Cloud Gaming use per hour?
The clearest way to estimate usage is to convert the stream’s sustained bitrate into gigabytes. At the rates used in a September 2026 analysis of Microsoft’s bitrate figures, one hour of play works out as follows:
| Sustained stream rate | Approximate data per hour | Two-hour session | Planning context |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 Mbps | 3.6 GB | 7.2 GB | Lower sustained-rate scenario |
| 15 Mbps | 6.75 GB | 13.5 GB | Mid-range planning estimate |
| 20 Mbps | 9 GB | 18 GB | Xbox’s recommended speed for consoles, PCs and tablets |
| 30 Mbps | 13.5 GB | 27 GB | High-rate ceiling used for planning |
These figures use decimal gigabytes (1,000 megabytes per gigabyte) and assume the rate is sustained for the entire session. A practical allowance of 7–14 GB for two hours is reasonable when your connection generally runs between 15 and 30 Mbps, but it remains a calculation range rather than a Microsoft guarantee.

Xbox does not publish one universal “GB per hour” number in the material available for this calculation. Your meter may therefore show a different result from a friend’s even when both are playing the same game.
How are the gigabyte estimates calculated?
Bitrate is measured in megabits per second (Mbps), while a data-plan meter usually reports gigabytes (GB). Convert between them with:
Mbps × 3,600 seconds ÷ 8 bits per byte ÷ 1,000 = decimal GB per hour
For example, 20 Mbps × 3,600 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000 equals 9 GB in one hour. The division by eight changes bits to bytes; multiplying by 3,600 extends one second to an hour.
The result is a planning estimate for a sustained video stream, not a promise that the Xbox app will transfer exactly that amount. Network protocol overhead, audio, control traffic, pauses in menus, adaptive quality and scene changes can move the measured total up or down. A quoted bitrate can also represent a ceiling that the service reaches only when conditions require it.

What data usage should I expect at different session lengths?
Session duration matters as much as the connection rate. Multiply the hourly estimate by the time you expect to play, then leave room for sign-in traffic, game menus and other activity on the same connection.

The table describes cloud-stream traffic only. It does not include console or PC updates, game downloads, operating-system patches, video calls, music or other devices sharing the plan. On a phone, background apps can consume data at the same time as the game.
What internet speed does Xbox Cloud Gaming require?
Xbox’s official cloud-gaming guidance says, “Best performance will be achieved at rates of 10 Mbps on mobile devices, 20 Mbps on consoles, PCs, and tablets, and 5Ghz WiFi or mobile data connection.” Xbox Wire likewise recommends at least 20 Mbps for stable cloud gaming and suggests wired Ethernet where possible.
| Device or connection | Published guidance | What it means for a data plan |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile device | 10 Mbps | Lower minimum, but cellular congestion and signal changes can still cause adaptation or interruptions. |
| Console, PC or tablet | 20 Mbps | Aim for this as a baseline for stable play; a 20 Mbps stream-rate estimate is about 9 GB per hour if sustained. |
| Wi-Fi | 5 GHz recommended | Usually offers a cleaner, faster local link than crowded 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, but it does not by itself reduce the stream’s data rate. |
| Wired network | Ethernet preferred where possible | Reduces wireless interference and variability, helping the stream hold a stable quality. |
Download speed is not the only requirement. Latency, packet loss, signal strength and congestion determine whether the service can maintain a consistent stream. A faster subscription does not automatically consume less data: data use is driven mainly by the selected or adaptive bitrate and the time spent playing.
Why can actual usage be lower or higher than the table?
Cloud gaming continuously adapts. If the connection weakens, the service can lower image quality or bitrate to keep input and video moving. When conditions improve, it can raise the rate again. A session that averages below its possible ceiling will therefore use less than a calculation based on that ceiling.

Game scenes change the stream
Fast camera movement, particles, foliage and detailed environments are harder to compress than a static menu. The same game can show different rates from one area to another, and an idle pause screen may transfer far less than active play.
Device and service versions matter
Encoding settings, resolution, browser or app version and the display being used affect the stream. The service can also change its delivery system over time, so an old measurement should not be treated as a current universal rate.
A historical measured example
Windows Central reported an Android xCloud test that transferred 590 MB in 15 minutes during 720p testing. That converts to approximately 2.36 GB per hour. It was a measurement from a particular device, network and service version in 2020, not a current Xbox specification; its lower average illustrates the difference between an observed session and a sustained high-rate calculation.
Will Xbox Cloud Gaming use up a mobile-data allowance?
It can, especially when a plan has a small cap. At 15 Mbps, two hours is about 13.5 GB; at 30 Mbps, the same play time can approach 27 GB. A single long weekend session can therefore consume a substantial portion of a 20 GB or 30 GB allowance.

- Check the plan’s remaining allowance and the date its billing period resets.
- Choose a conservative rate from the table. If your connection commonly reaches 20 Mbps, budgeting around 9 GB per hour is safer than assuming every session will resemble a low-rate test.
- Multiply that hourly figure by your planned play time, then reserve data for every other device and service sharing the plan.
- Run one timed, one-hour session and read the phone, hotspot or router counter before and after. Use that measured result for future planning because it reflects your device, quality mode and local network.
Cellular performance can change with location, tower load and movement. A speed test that looks excellent at home does not guarantee the same bitrate on a train, in a crowded venue or at peak evening hours.

How can I protect a capped Windows connection?
Windows’ metered-connection setting can limit background updates, Store downloads and syncing that would otherwise compete with the cloud stream or consume the allowance. It does not reduce the cloud game’s own video traffic.
- Open Settings and choose Network & internet.
- Select the active Wi-Fi network or Ethernet connection.
- Turn on Metered connection.
- Before playing, pause or schedule large downloads and close applications that continuously synchronize files or video.
- After the session, review Windows’ data-usage view or the router’s counter to see the total for the connection.
Because the setting affects the whole Windows connection, remember to turn it off when you want normal update behavior again. Other devices connected through the same router are not controlled by a Windows setting; monitor those devices at the router or on the devices themselves.
What network setup gives the most stable stream?
Use Ethernet from the console or PC to the router when practical. If you need Wi-Fi, place the device close enough to the router for a strong 5 GHz signal and avoid obstacles or interference. On mobile, use a reliable 5G or LTE location and keep the phone from switching repeatedly between weak cells or Wi-Fi networks.

- Control local congestion: Pause another device’s 4K video stream, cloud backup or large download while playing.
- Do not expect a faster tier to save data: A 100 Mbps broadband plan can still deliver a 20–30 Mbps game stream and use the same hourly amount as a slower plan under identical adaptive conditions.
- Keep input hardware ready: Supported devices require a compatible Bluetooth or USB controller. A controller connection is separate from the internet bitrate but is necessary to play.
What should I compare when choosing a plan for cloud gaming?
Compare more than the advertised download speed. The following checklist covers the factors that determine whether a plan is practical:
- Sustained bitrate and hourly data: Use the table to translate likely rates into GB, then multiply by your actual weekly play time.
- Allowance and overage policy: Check the monthly cap, throttling threshold, reset date and cost or speed reduction after the allowance is exhausted.
- Consistency and latency: Read the plan’s terms for congestion management and test at the times you normally play.
- Connection type: Ethernet, 5 GHz Wi-Fi and capable 5G can each provide a stable path when configured well.
- Hardware: Confirm that your phone, tablet, PC or console is supported and that you have a compatible Bluetooth or USB controller.
- Shared household traffic: Subtract the data used by streaming video, backups, cameras and other users before assigning the remainder to gaming.
If the allowance is tight, local installation can avoid the continuing cloud-stream transfer during play, but it requires downloading the game and subsequent updates first. Whether that trade-off helps depends on the size of those downloads and how often you play.

How do I know which estimate to use?
Use the measured counter from your own one-hour session whenever possible. If you cannot test first, budget using 15–30 Mbps (6.75–13.5 GB per hour) for a cautious range, then adjust after observing real usage. Use the lower 8 Mbps estimate only when you have evidence that your sessions consistently run at that rate; it should not be treated as a guaranteed minimum.
For a two-hour session, setting aside 7–14 GB is a useful starting range for a 15–30 Mbps connection, with additional headroom for other household traffic. Recheck the meter after a major app, device or network change because adaptive behavior and encoding can change.

Does playing over 5G use less data than playing over Wi-Fi?
No. The access network changes how the stream reaches you, not the amount of video encoded for a given bitrate and session length. A strong 5G connection and a strong Wi-Fi connection can use similar data; the more important variables are adaptive quality, sustained bitrate and time played.
Why did an older test report much less than 9 GB per hour?
The 2.36 GB-per-hour figure came from a 2020 Android test averaging 590 MB over 15 minutes at 720p. It reflects that device, service version, network and scene mix, whereas 9 GB per hour is the conversion for a sustained 20 Mbps rate.
Can I play Xbox Cloud Gaming with a 5 Mbps connection?
Xbox’s published guidance sets 10 Mbps for mobile devices and 20 Mbps for consoles, PCs and tablets. A lower rate may produce reduced quality or interruptions, so it is below the stated best-performance guidance rather than a dependable target.
Does a data counter include game downloads and updates?
Usually, a phone or router counter reports all traffic on that connection, not just the cloud stream. Separate downloads, updates, backups and other household devices can therefore make the total much higher than the hourly gaming estimate.
