Xbox Cloud Gaming lets you play eligible Xbox games without installing them. Open xbox.com/play in a supported browser on a Windows PC, Mac, phone, tablet, or Chromebook, sign in, choose a cloud-enabled game, and connect a compatible controller unless that title supports touch or mouse and keyboard. Windows users can also stream through the Xbox PC app.
You generally need an eligible Game Pass plan for its catalog. Select free-to-play games, including Fortnite, can be streamed with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. The important checks are your plan, the individual game, your region and device, input support, and connection quality. Cloud streaming is different from downloading a PC game: the game runs remotely and your device receives the interactive video stream.

What is Xbox Cloud Gaming, and how is it different from installing a game?
Xbox Cloud Gaming runs a supported Xbox game on Microsoft’s remote hardware and streams the result to your screen. Your controller, touch input, or mouse and keyboard sends commands back over the internet. You do not need to download the full game or reserve the same storage space required for a local PC installation.
That convenience comes with conditions. Streaming depends on an eligible plan or a qualifying free-to-play title, a game that is specifically enabled for cloud play, a supported device and region, compatible controls, and a sufficiently stable connection. A game appearing in a Game Pass library does not automatically mean it can be streamed. Likewise, owning an Xbox game digitally does not make every title available in the cloud.

Use the live catalog on Xbox Cloud Gaming as the final authority. Availability can change with licensing, platform, region, plan, and time. The U.S. plan pages and catalog should not be treated as a worldwide list; Xbox’s U.S. and U.K. pages show different library figures.
What do I need before starting?
Gather these items before opening a game:
- A Microsoft account. A free account is enough for select free-to-play cloud titles in supported regions. Subscription-catalog games generally require an eligible Game Pass plan.
- A supported route. Use a current supported browser at xbox.com/play, or use the Xbox PC app on Windows.
- A cloud-eligible game. Check the cloud symbol or the title’s details in the current catalog. Neither a plan library nor your personal ownership list is a guarantee of cloud access.
- Controls. A compatible Xbox-style controller is the broadest option. Some titles provide touch controls, and a smaller, title-specific selection supports mouse and keyboard.
- A suitable connection. Xbox recommends at least 10 Mbps download speed generally, identifies 10 Mbps on mobile and 20 Mbps on PCs and tablets as best-performance rates, and recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Your location, device, and local network conditions still affect the stream.
These are service requirements rather than a promise that every combination will work identically. A browser may be supported while a particular device, account, region, game, or input method is not.

Xbox’s current U.S. plan pages display cloud-playtime allowances of 5 hours per month for Essential, 10 hours for Premium, and 15 hours for Ultimate. The figures are displayed subscription allowances, not a measurement of how much time a particular player has used. Xbox also says that cloud hours from multiple eligible subscriptions do not stack.
| Access route | Displayed cloud hours | Current U.S. plan description | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free Microsoft account | No subscription allowance stated | Select free-to-play cloud games, such as Fortnite | Useful for trying an eligible free title without subscribing. |
| Game Pass Essential | 5 hours per month | 50+ games across the plan’s described devices | Lowest listed subscription cloud allowance. |
| Game Pass Premium | 10 hours per month | 200+ games across the plan’s described devices | More listed cloud time and a larger plan library. |
| Game Pass Ultimate | 15 hours per month | 500+ games across the plan’s described devices | Highest listed allowance, plus day-one games and other listed benefits. |
| PC Game Pass | No cloud benefit included | PC games installed and played locally | Do not choose it alone if your goal is Xbox Cloud Gaming. |
The 50+, 200+, and 500+ figures describe the respective U.S. plan libraries, not the number of games that are cloud-enabled. A title can be in a plan’s overall library yet require local installation or be unavailable in your region. See the current Xbox Game Pass page and the cloud catalog before subscribing for a particular game.
Xbox Wire’s December 2025 getting-started article used the word “unlimited” for cloud gaming, but the current subscription pages display monthly allowances. For a purchase decision, use the current plan pages rather than the older wording, and verify the terms shown for your country.
Is PC Game Pass enough for cloud streaming?
No. PC Game Pass is described as a way to install and play PC games locally; the current plan information does not include a cloud-gaming benefit for it. If you subscribe only to PC Game Pass, the Xbox PC app may let you install eligible PC titles, but that is not the same as launching a cloud stream.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose a plan that explicitly lists cloud gaming, then confirm that the specific title has cloud support. If you already have more than one eligible plan, Xbox states that their cloud hours do not add together, so stacking subscriptions does not create a larger monthly allowance.
How do I play on a Windows PC?
Windows offers two routes: a browser and the Xbox PC app. The browser route is usually the quickest because it does not require a local game installation.

- Open Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, or another browser supported by Xbox and go to xbox.com/play.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns your eligible plan or qualifies for the free-to-play title.
- Browse or search for a game and open its details. Confirm that cloud play is offered for your account and region.
- Connect a compatible controller, or verify that the title displays touch or mouse-and-keyboard controls.
- Select Play to start the stream.
For the app route, install or open the Xbox PC app, sign in, and select a cloud-enabled game. Keep the distinction clear: a button that installs a PC version downloads files to Windows, while a cloud-play button starts remote streaming. The Xbox PC app’s Windows 10 or Windows 11 version 22H2 requirement applies to that app route; it does not automatically impose the same requirement on every browser session.
How do I play on a Mac?
Use the browser route; Xbox describes Mac cloud play through the web rather than requiring a dedicated macOS Xbox app.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open a supported browser on your Mac.
- Visit xbox.com/play and sign in.
- Select a title marked for cloud play.
- Pair a compatible controller, unless the game offers another supported input method.
- Start the stream and keep the browser tab active while playing.
A Mac can meet the browser requirement and still fail the game-specific requirement. If a title is missing, check its cloud eligibility and your region before treating the browser as the problem. Xbox’s Mac guidance is also summarized in its Xbox on PC information.
How do I play on an iPhone, iPad, or Android phone?
Use a supported mobile browser. A dedicated mobile Xbox app is not a prerequisite for cloud streaming.
- Open your browser and go to xbox.com/play.
- Sign in and choose a cloud-enabled game.
- If the game has touch controls, start it directly. Otherwise pair a compatible Bluetooth or wired controller supported by your device.
- For easier repeat access, use the browser’s Add to Home Screen command. This creates a shortcut; it does not turn the service into a separately installed game.
Phone screens and mobile networks make a stable connection particularly important. Xbox identifies 10 Mbps as its best-performance rate for mobile and recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi where available. A controller mount or phone-specific controller can improve ergonomics, but an existing compatible controller may already be sufficient.
Can I use Xbox Cloud Gaming on ChromeOS or other devices through the web?
Xbox routes Android, iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and ChromeOS users through the browser. On supported devices, open xbox.com/play, sign in, and use the same game, plan, control, and connection checks.

Browser support alone is not a guarantee: the service also evaluates your location, device, account, plan, game availability, and input method. If a browser loads the page but a title cannot start, check those other conditions rather than assuming that installing a different browser will solve it.
Which games can I stream?
Cloud eligibility is a property of the individual game, not just the subscription. Start with the cloud catalog and look for the cloud-play option. The catalog can change as games enter or leave a plan, licensing changes, or regional rights differ.

Some digitally owned games outside the subscription catalog can also be streamed with an eligible plan. Ownership is therefore useful but not decisive: only selected owned games are supported. Xbox reported in an April 2026 update that more than 1,000 owned games were eligible to stream across supported devices. That is Xbox’s dated publisher figure, not a live count or a promise that a particular title is included today.
Free-to-play access is a separate path. Select titles such as Fortnite can be played in the cloud with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. You still need a supported device, browser, input method, and connection, and the free-to-play list is not universal.
Plan-library totals should be read carefully. Xbox’s current U.S. descriptions list 50+, 200+, and 500+ games for Essential, Premium, and Ultimate, respectively. Those totals cover each plan’s library across its described benefits; they are not cloud-only totals. Always open the title’s current details page before relying on it for cloud play.
What controllers and inputs work?
A compatible controller is the safest choice because it works across the widest range of games and devices. Pair it with Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, or another supported device according to that platform’s normal Bluetooth or USB procedure, then launch the cloud session.
Touch controls are available only in selected games and appear when the title supports them. Xbox reported more than 260 cloud games with touch support in its April 2026 update; that is a dated service figure, not a guarantee for every game. Touch can be convenient on a phone, but the on-screen layout and available buttons are title-specific.
Mouse and keyboard support is also game-specific. Xbox reported more than 190 cloud games supporting that input method in April 2026. A keyboard connected to your device will not automatically convert every console game into a mouse-and-keyboard game, so look for the input indicator on the game’s cloud page first.
Before buying new hardware, test whether your existing controller is recognized by the device and the game. If controls do not appear, verify the controller’s connection, check the title’s supported-input information, and try the browser or app route recommended for your device.
How fast does my internet need to be?
Xbox’s cloud-gaming guidance gives 10 Mbps download as a general minimum and identifies 10 Mbps for mobile and 20 Mbps for consoles, PCs, and tablets as rates for best performance. These are guidance figures from Xbox, not a guarantee of a particular resolution or latency.

- Prefer 5 GHz Wi-Fi when your router and device support it.
- On a PC or console, use a wired connection where practical for a more consistent link.
- Reduce competing high-bandwidth activity on the same network while playing.
- On mobile data, account for your carrier’s limits and changing signal quality.
- Move closer to the access point or use a less congested network if the stream repeatedly degrades.
Speed is only one part of the result. Xbox cautions that location and device conditions also affect cloud play. A connection that meets a speed test can still produce an unstable session if wireless interference, congestion, or regional routing changes during play.
What is the simplest first-session checklist?
- Confirm the account. Sign in with the Microsoft account that has the eligible plan, owns the qualifying title, or is being used for an eligible free-to-play game.
- Confirm the plan. Check that your subscription explicitly includes cloud gaming. Do not rely on PC Game Pass alone.
- Confirm the title. Open its live cloud details page and verify availability in your region.
- Confirm the device route. Use the Xbox PC app or browser on Windows; use the browser on Mac, mobile, tablet, or ChromeOS.
- Confirm controls. Pair a controller or verify touch or mouse-and-keyboard support for that game.
- Confirm the network. Aim for Xbox’s stated rates, use 5 GHz Wi-Fi or wired networking where possible, and pause unnecessary traffic.
- Start the stream. Select Play, wait for the session to load, and keep the browser or app in the foreground.
This sequence isolates the most common eligibility mistakes before you spend time changing browser settings or reinstalling an app.

Why is a game missing from the cloud list?
First check the game’s current cloud status, your plan, and your region. A title can be in a Game Pass library without being cloud-enabled, can be available to install but not stream, or can be offered in one market and absent in another.
If you own the game, confirm that your edition and account are the ones supported for cloud streaming. Xbox’s owned-game streaming option covers selected titles rather than every digital purchase. If the catalog has recently changed, use the live listing instead of an older article or screenshot.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I do when controls are unavailable?
Check the title’s input indicators first. A controller may be required even when the device has a keyboard, while touch and mouse-and-keyboard modes appear only for selected games. Re-pair the controller, reconnect it before launching the session, and verify that the operating system recognizes it.
If the game supports only a controller, changing browsers will not add touch or keyboard controls. Conversely, if the game supports touch but the overlay is absent, confirm that you are using a supported mobile route and that the title is the touch-enabled version shown in the catalog.
How can I troubleshoot an unstable stream?
Compare your connection with Xbox’s guidance: at least 10 Mbps download generally, 10 Mbps for mobile, and 20 Mbps for PCs and tablets for best performance. Move to 5 GHz Wi-Fi or a wired connection where available, reduce competing traffic, and try again from a location with a stronger wireless signal.
If the problem follows one device but not another on the same network, the device or browser may be the limiting factor. If it follows one location or network, location and connection conditions are more likely contributors. Xbox also notes that device and geographic conditions affect performance, so there is no single browser setting that can fix every interruption.

How much does Xbox Cloud Gaming cost?
Cloud access is tied to the plan and region shown on Xbox’s live pages. The current U.S. pages retrieved for this guide displayed price placeholders, so an exact monthly dollar figure should not be inferred here. Check the subscription page for your country immediately before subscribing.
For a free trial of the concept, use an eligible free-to-play title with a free Microsoft account if that option is available in your region. For subscription games, compare the displayed cloud hours and library description rather than assuming that a more expensive plan is necessary for a device you already own. Essential, Premium, and Ultimate list different monthly allowances, and hours do not stack across eligible subscriptions.
Is cloud gaming a good fit for you?
It is a strong fit when you want to start a game without a large download, move between a PC and mobile device, or play on hardware that cannot install the local PC version. A browser route can also be useful on a Mac or Chromebook where a native Windows installation is not available.
Local installation remains preferable when you need offline play, want to avoid consuming a monthly cloud allowance, or have a connection that is unreliable. Cloud gaming also requires checking the title every time availability changes. The practical decision is therefore not “cloud or download for every game,” but whether this particular game, plan, device, and network line up for the session you want.
What current Xbox figures should you treat as estimates?
Xbox’s April 2026 update reported more than 1,000 eligible owned games, more than 190 games with mouse-and-keyboard support, and more than 260 with touch controls. These are dated publisher figures and can change; they should not be presented as a guarantee that a named game supports a particular input or that the live catalog still contains the same count.
Similarly, the 50+, 200+, and 500+ plan-library figures are labeled U.S. descriptions and are not cloud-only counts. Use them to understand the relative scope of the plans, then verify the exact title in the current catalog for your country.
Key takeaways
- Start at xbox.com/play on a supported browser; Windows also has the Xbox PC app.
- Use a cloud-enabled Game Pass plan for subscription-catalog games; PC Game Pass alone is for local PC play.
- Free-to-play cloud titles such as Fortnite may work with a free Microsoft account in supported regions.
- Current U.S. pages display 5, 10, and 15 monthly cloud hours for Essential, Premium, and Ultimate.
- Verify the individual game’s cloud status, region, controls, and connection before troubleshooting the app.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play Xbox Cloud Gaming on a Chromebook without installing Windows?
Yes, when the Chromebook, region, account, plan, game, and input method are supported. Use a browser at xbox.com/play; ChromeOS does not require the Windows Xbox PC app.
Does streaming a game use space on my PC or phone?
Cloud play does not require downloading the complete game installation to the device. You still need ordinary browser or app storage, and the session depends on an active internet connection.
Why can I own an Xbox game but still be unable to stream it?
Owned-game streaming is limited to selected titles and can vary by region, device, plan, and time. Digital ownership alone does not make every Xbox game cloud-enabled, so check the title’s current cloud listing.
Will a faster internet plan make every cloud game work?
Higher throughput cannot guarantee access or eliminate every interruption. Xbox also points to device, location, wireless conditions, and the game’s supported input method, so eligibility checks remain necessary.
