Xbox is coming to cars, but not as a built-in console. Microsoft and LG announced on September 9, 2025, that the Xbox app will be integrated into LG’s webOS Automotive Content Platform (ACP) for select internet-connected vehicles. The games will run through Xbox Cloud Gaming, making this primarily a passenger-entertainment feature for compatible cars—not a way for drivers to play while driving.
What Microsoft and LG actually announced
Microsoft is bringing the Xbox app and Xbox Cloud Gaming to LG’s webOS Automotive Content Platform. LG supplies the in-vehicle software platform; Microsoft supplies the Xbox app, cloud-gaming service, account system, and Game Pass catalog.
The partnership was announced alongside LG’s vehicle partnership with Zoom at IAA Mobility 2025 in Munich. LG describes its automotive platform as part of a broader software-defined-vehicle strategy, in which vehicles gain entertainment and communication services through software and cloud partnerships.
That does not mean every car with LG technology will become Xbox-compatible. The announcement refers only to select vehicles using a compatible implementation of LG’s automotive platform. It does not name a definitive production-car list, launch automaker, model year, market-by-market rollout, or consumer release date.

Xbox’s announcement and LG’s announcement therefore describe a real partnership, but not a feature that can currently be assumed to work in any particular vehicle.
There is no Xbox console inside the car
The games will be rendered on Microsoft’s remote servers and streamed to the vehicle’s infotainment display. The car provides the screen, app interface, internet connection, and a way to connect a controller.
In practical terms, the experience should be closer to using Xbox Cloud Gaming on a smart TV than to playing on an Xbox Series X or Series S installed in the vehicle. There is no announced console hardware, disc drive, or local game installation involved.
This distinction matters because cloud gaming depends on connectivity. Cellular dead zones, congestion, latency, data limits, and the vehicle’s hardware can all affect image quality and responsiveness. The partnership announcement does not promise console-equivalent performance in every car.

A passenger will generally need all of the following:
- A compatible vehicle: The car must use a supported version of LG’s webOS Automotive Content Platform and have the Xbox app enabled.
- An Xbox account: The player will need to sign in to a Microsoft/Xbox account.
- A qualifying subscription: Xbox specifically identifies Game Pass Ultimate for access to the announced catalog of hundreds of cloud games.
- A compatible Bluetooth controller: Console-style games will normally require a controller rather than relying on the vehicle’s touchscreen.
- An internet connection: Xbox says the automotive scenario requires an automotive data plan or another supported connection.
- A supported region and game: Cloud availability varies by country, subscription, platform, licensing, and title.
Xbox’s general cloud-gaming guidance also requires a supported device, compatible controller, supported region, and adequate internet connection. Its general guidance mentions 10 Mbps as a minimum in some contexts, while its TV guidance recommends 20 Mbps for the best experience. Those figures are not confirmed vehicle-specific requirements.

The Game Pass subscription, vehicle connectivity plan, and controller are separate potential costs. The vehicle’s purchase price alone would not necessarily include access to Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Which Xbox games will be available?
Xbox and LG cite games including:
- Gears of War: Reloaded
- Forza Horizon 5
- The Outer Worlds 2
- DOOM: The Dark Ages
The announcement refers to hundreds of games through Game Pass Ultimate, but that is not a permanent, universal list. Xbox says the cloud catalog can change according to time, region, subscription plan, platform, and licensing.
Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can also stream some games they own. Xbox gives examples such as Bugsnax, Don’t Starve, and Mafia: The Old Country. That does not mean every owned Xbox game can be streamed; the specific title must support cloud streaming.
Before buying a vehicle or subscription for this purpose, check whether the game you actually want is supported in the relevant country and plan.
Can the driver play while the car is moving?
No—not as a practical or safe use case. Microsoft’s announcement presents the feature for passengers and says it will operate in line with driving-safety regulations. Vehicle software may block interactive or video features while the car is moving, and local rules can impose additional restrictions.
The realistic scenarios are:
- Playing while the vehicle is parked.
- Playing during an electric-vehicle charging stop.
- Keeping rear-seat passengers entertained on a long trip.
- Using the system while waiting for someone.
Readers should not interpret the presence of an Xbox app on a front infotainment screen as permission for the driver to use it. The feature is designed around passenger entertainment, not gaming behind the wheel.

Which cars will support Xbox?
This remains the biggest unanswered question. The official announcements reviewed do not provide a definitive list of makes, models, trims, model years, screens, or countries that will support Xbox Cloud Gaming through LG’s automotive platform.
They also do not establish:
- Whether existing vehicles can receive the app through an over-the-air update.
- Whether support will be limited to new vehicles.
- Whether the app will require rear-seat displays.
- Whether a specific screen size or infotainment processor is necessary.
- Whether a manufacturer’s connected-services package will be required.
- When the first consumer vehicle will receive the feature.
LG says it aims to supply its webOS-based ACP to 20 million vehicles by 2030. That is a platform-supply ambition, not a promise that 20 million vehicles will support Xbox.
Some secondary coverage has discussed links between LG’s automotive platform and Hyundai Motor Group brands, including Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis. However, the official Xbox and LG announcements do not confirm Xbox support for specific production models. Those brands should not be treated as Xbox-compatible until the automaker, LG, or Xbox publishes a model-level announcement.
Is Xbox in cars available now?
The partnership is real, but broad consumer availability is not established by the announcement.

The Xbox post from September 2025 says the feature is coming to select vehicles and does not give a public launch date. LG likewise presents the integration as an upcoming capability. The official materials cited here do not provide a public vehicle compatibility list or a general retail sign-up process for in-car Xbox as of August 18, 2026.
It is useful to separate four different claims:
| Status | What is confirmed |
|---|---|
| Announced | Xbox app integration into LG’s webOS Automotive Content Platform. |
| Demonstrated or promoted | The automotive concept was presented around IAA Mobility 2025. |
| Confirmed for a particular car | No public model list is identified in the official announcements reviewed. |
| Generally purchasable | A broad consumer rollout is not established. |
In other words, buying Game Pass Ultimate today does not guarantee that Xbox will appear in a vehicle. Compatibility must be confirmed for the exact make, model, trim, market, software version, and connected-services package.

What LG’s webOS Automotive Content Platform does
LG’s ACP is an automotive adaptation of its webOS ecosystem for delivering content and services through vehicle infotainment systems. It should not be treated as identical to the webOS software used by LG televisions.
Automotive versions can have different hardware, certification requirements, update policies, manufacturer controls, and safety restrictions. The vehicle maker may determine which apps are enabled, when they can run, which screens they use, and how accounts and data are handled.

LG’s separate Xbox partnership for select smart TVs is useful context, but it does not prove automotive compatibility. The Xbox app became available on select LG TVs in April 2025, and Xbox’s TV page identifies supported LG televisions using webOS 24 and newer. A television requirement is not a vehicle requirement.
Xbox’s LG TV announcement and its current TV guidance describe a separate product category.

Cloud gaming in a car could be most useful during charging stops or for passengers with access to a suitably positioned screen. It may be less appealing for ordinary commuting if the display is accessible only to the front passenger, if games are blocked while moving, or if the vehicle’s data connection is inconsistent.
A controller will likely be more practical than touchscreen controls for racing, action, and first-person games. Responsiveness will depend on the mobile connection and the distance to Microsoft’s cloud servers, so fast-paced games may feel worse during congestion or weak coverage.

These are practical implications of cloud gaming and vehicle safety restrictions, not claims based on vehicle-specific testing. The announcements do not establish image quality, latency, data consumption, controller pairing behavior, or screen placement for a particular car.
Check these details before buying anything
If a manufacturer announces a compatible vehicle, verify all of the following:
- Exact compatibility: Confirm the make, model, trim, model year, infotainment system, and country.
- Screen access: Find out whether the display is usable by passengers and whether it is disabled while moving.
- Connectivity: Check whether the vehicle includes cellular data, a hotspot, or a paid connected-services plan.
- Subscription tier: Confirm whether Game Pass Ultimate is required or whether the desired title works with another plan.
- Controller support: Verify that the vehicle accepts the controller you intend to use over Bluetooth.
- Game support: Check the cloud availability of the specific games you care about.
- Updates: Ask whether support arrives through an over-the-air update, a dealer update, or only on new vehicles.
- Account privacy: Determine how passengers sign out and whether account information is retained in the car.
Common problems passengers may encounter
- The Xbox app is missing: The vehicle may not use a supported ACP build, may be in an unsupported market, or may not have received the required update.
- The controller will not pair: Automotive Bluetooth support may differ from Bluetooth support on a television, phone, or PC.
- A game will not launch: The title may not support cloud streaming, may require another plan, or may be unavailable in the region.
- Gameplay is unresponsive: Weak coverage, congestion, packet loss, or high latency can make cloud gaming unpleasant.
- Streaming uses too much data: Long sessions may encounter data caps, throttling, or additional charges.
- Playback is blocked: The vehicle may restrict gaming or video when it is moving.
- The feature changes after an update: Xbox, LG, and the vehicle manufacturer control different parts of the experience, so app availability and behavior can change independently.
Is this worth caring about?
For Xbox users who regularly wait while charging or travel as rear-seat passengers, the feature could remove the need to bring a separate screen or console. It also extends Xbox Cloud Gaming into another part of Microsoft’s multi-device strategy.
For most buyers, however, the announcement is not yet a reason to choose one car over another. The important information—compatible models, launch markets, pricing, data plans, and release timing—remains vehicle-specific and has not been supplied in the official announcement.
For a more immediately available alternative, Xbox Cloud Gaming works on supported phones, tablets, PCs, and select smart TVs. Compatible LG TVs running supported webOS versions are a home-use option, but buying an LG television, Xbox controller, or Game Pass subscription does not guarantee access to Xbox in a car.
Readers interested in the service can review the official Game Pass page, Xbox’s controller page, and the current cloud-gaming requirements. They should treat Game Pass or accessory purchases as useful for supported devices generally—not as proof that an unspecified vehicle will work.
