Yes, rising RAM prices have already put pressure on prebuilt PCs. CyberPowerPC planned a system-wide price adjustment for December 7, 2025, while Maingear said it was trying to delay increases. Dell and HP warned that higher memory costs could mean higher prices or lower memory configurations. But there has not been one uniform increase across every prebuilt: manufacturers can raise prices, reduce specifications, cut margins, or change components.

As of August 2026, memory remains expensive and supply is still tight, although the pace of increases was expected to moderate. That makes the full specification—not just the advertised CPU, GPU, or RAM capacity—the key to finding a good gaming or creator PC.

The short answer: expect pressure, not a universal surcharge

A prebuilt PC’s price reflects its CPU, GPU, motherboard, power supply, case, cooling, storage, Windows license, assembly, testing, warranty, shipping, and seller margin. RAM is only one line item, so a large increase in memory cost does not translate directly into the same increase in the finished PC.

A system builder may absorb some of the increase, pass it on selectively, use older inventory, or offer less memory at the same headline price. The last option can be particularly difficult to spot: a listing may remain at the same price while changing from 32GB to 16GB, from two memory modules to one, or from a faster kit to a slower one.

  • Turn on the Bright Lights: With the built-in RGB lighting, take your gaming experience to the next level by pressing the MSI LED button to cycle through lighting options. Customize lighting even further with MSI Center software.

The practical conclusion is simple: do not assume every prebuilt is overpriced, but do not compare systems by sticker price alone.

Why RAM became more expensive

The shortage is not simply a case of AI servers buying the same desktop memory sticks used in gaming PCs. High-bandwidth memory (HBM), server DDR5, and consumer DRAM are different products. However, they compete for manufacturing resources, wafer capacity, packaging, and supplier attention.

AI and data-center operators are ordering large quantities of higher-margin server memory and HBM. Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron have been prioritizing those products, squeezing supply available for ordinary consumer DRAM. New fabrication capacity also takes years to build, so manufacturers cannot quickly respond to a sudden demand surge.

The transition between generations adds another complication. DDR5 is becoming the mainstream platform memory, but DDR4 production has also been constrained as suppliers shift capacity. Older memory therefore is not automatically cheaper; a shrinking supply of DDR4 can produce its own price spikes.

TrendForce attributed the imbalance to AI and data-center demand, supplier allocation, limited near-term capacity, and ongoing product transitions. Its January 2026 outlook also linked the pressure to NAND and SSD markets, although RAM remains the main concern for this story.

Which PC companies were affected?

CyberPowerPC

CyberPowerPC reportedly planned to adjust pricing across its systems effective December 7, 2025. That confirms that memory inflation had reached the custom-system market, but it does not prove that every model rose by the same percentage. System builders buy memory in volume, and their costs can lead or lag retail prices depending on contracts and inventory.

On CyberPowerPC’s configuration pages, check the exact memory kit, motherboard, power supply, and upgrade prices rather than assuming the cheapest displayed configuration is the best value.

Maingear

Maingear said it was attempting to delay price increases for as long as possible. That illustrates why two builders can respond differently to the same market: one may have better inventory or supply agreements, while another may need to reprice sooner.

There is not enough evidence to assign a current percentage increase to Maingear’s entire lineup. Buyers interested in its premium systems should compare the complete build and the value of its assembly and support through Maingear’s current store.

Dell, HP, and Lenovo

Dell warned that rising memory costs were affecting the cost basis across products. HP indicated that it could raise prices or reduce memory configurations. Lenovo reportedly stockpiled memory to balance availability and pricing.

These statements apply broadly to PCs and other devices, not necessarily to every gaming desktop sold by each company. Alienware, HP OMEN, and Lenovo Legion models can have very different boards, cooling systems, power supplies, and upgrade paths.

How large was the increase?

There are several different prices in the memory supply chain, and they should not be confused.

  • Retail module price: what a consumer pays for a memory kit.
  • Contract DRAM price: what manufacturers and large buyers negotiate for memory chips.
  • Finished-system price: what a buyer pays for a complete PC.

As a retail example, The Verge reported that a 32GB G.Skill DDR5-6000 kit rose from $124.99 in September 2025 to $389.99 in December 2025. A comparable Corsair 32GB DDR5 kit reportedly increased from $134.99 to $427.99. Those are specific products during a shortage, not a universal price for every 32GB kit.

At the industry level, TrendForce forecast PC DRAM prices to rise by more than 100% quarter over quarter in the first quarter of 2026. It later reported that overall DRAM-industry revenue rose 81% quarter over quarter in that period, to $97 billion. For the third quarter, TrendForce expected consumer and PC memory prices to keep rising, but at a more moderate rate—roughly 13% to 18% quarter over quarter in one regional update.

These figures describe contract markets or industry revenue. They are not predictions that every prebuilt PC will double in price. Read the original reporting from The Verge, TrendForce’s first-quarter forecast, and its first-quarter industry results with that distinction in mind.

Which buyers are most exposed?

  • Budget desktops: builders have less margin to absorb component inflation and may cut RAM or use less attractive configurations.
  • 32GB and 64GB gaming PCs: higher-capacity systems use more memory and are more exposed to kit shortages.
  • Creator and workstation PCs: video editing, 3D work, software development, and local AI systems commonly use 64GB, 96GB, or 128GB, increasing the absolute impact.
  • DDR4 systems: older does not necessarily mean cheaper while production is being reduced during the DDR4-to-DDR5 transition.
  • Promotion shoppers: a discount may reflect older inventory, but the system may also have one DIMM, slow memory, a weak power supply, or limited expansion.

How to audit a prebuilt listing

Use this checklist before paying for a system:

Area What to verify Why it matters
Memory Capacity, DDR4/DDR5 generation, speed, timings, number of modules, open slots One stick can reduce performance, while vague specifications make future upgrades difficult.
Motherboard Chipset, DIMM slots, M.2 slots, BIOS support, standard or proprietary design Determines whether memory and storage can be upgraded.
CPU and GPU Exact desktop model, GPU memory capacity, power limits, cooling “Core i7” or “RTX graphics” is not precise enough for comparison.
Power supply Brand, model, wattage, efficiency, GPU power connectors A low-grade PSU can limit upgrades and reliability.
Storage SSD capacity and interface, additional drive slots, drive quality Vendors may offset memory costs by reducing storage.
Warranty Coverage, return window, shipping responsibility, repair process Warranty and support are part of the prebuilt’s value.

Be especially cautious when a listing says only “16GB DDR5” without identifying speed or module layout. Also check whether the memory is standard desktop DIMM, soldered, or proprietary.

Should you buy now, wait, or build?

Buy now when the complete system is good value

Buy now if you need the PC within the next one to three months and the system has a strong GPU, reputable power supply, standard components, and a competitive total price. A builder may have purchased memory before the latest increase, allowing a prebuilt to undercut a fresh DIY parts list.

Wait when the listing has warning signs

Waiting makes sense if you do not need a computer immediately, the memory details are vague, or the seller charges an unusually high price for a RAM upgrade. Waiting is not guaranteed to make the PC cheaper: as of August 2026, market forecasts still pointed to tight supply, even though the rate of increase was expected to slow.

Build your own when you can reuse parts

DIY can win if you already own a GPU, case, power supply, storage, or Windows license, or if a prebuilt uses proprietary parts. It is also preferable when you need a specific 64GB or 128GB configuration and the builder’s upgrade pricing is excessive.

Compare the proposed build using PCPartPicker, but treat the result as a parts-cost comparison—not a complete calculation of assembly, testing, Windows licensing, warranty, shipping, or OEM discounts. Newegg can help compare standalone memory and systems, while Micro Center is useful for local pickup and location-dependent bundles.

Ways to limit the RAM premium

  1. Compare 16GB and 32GB configurations carefully. A lower-memory model can be worthwhile if it has two open DIMM slots and sensible upgrade pricing.
  2. Avoid one-DIMM systems. Do not plan an upgrade if the motherboard has only one slot, uses proprietary or soldered memory, or gives no reliable compatibility information.
  3. Check the upgrade price against retail kits. A vendor’s memory upgrade may cost far more than the actual capacity difference.
  4. Do not assume DDR4 is a bargain. Compare the entire platform and the cost of replacement memory.
  5. Track the full specification. An unchanged price may conceal a slower kit, less storage, or a weaker PSU.
  6. Timestamp price comparisons. Memory and prebuilt prices can change quickly, and U.S. availability varies by retailer and location.

Will prebuilt prices keep rising?

The evidence supports continued risk, not certainty. TrendForce continued to describe DRAM supply as tight in 2026, with major suppliers prioritizing server products. It expected consumer memory prices to rise in the third quarter, but more slowly than during the extreme increases earlier in the year. New capacity and Micron’s continuing server-DDR5 development may eventually improve supply, but new fabs and production transitions are not immediate solutions.

TrendForce’s July 2026 outlook described AI demand as likely to outpace supply expansion into 2027. That is an industry forecast, not a guarantee that retail RAM or finished PCs will rise continuously through 2027. Retail discounts can also appear temporarily when distributors clear old stock, even while contract prices remain elevated.

SSD prices are a secondary risk. TrendForce also forecast NAND increases alongside DRAM in early 2026, so buyers should check storage capacity and drive quality rather than assuming only the memory line has changed.

Bottom line

Rising RAM prices already affected custom system builders and contributed to higher memory costs across the PC market. The smartest response is not automatically to buy immediately or abandon prebuilts. Compare the complete configuration, inspect the DIMM layout and power supply, and calculate whether the system’s price is competitive against today’s parts.

A prebuilt remains a sensible choice when it combines a strong GPU, adequate two-stick memory, standard upgradeable components, and meaningful warranty support. A cheap-looking listing with vague RAM, proprietary parts, or inflated upgrades may be the deal that costs more later.
