For Xbox Cloud Gaming alone, keeping SteamOS is usually the better choice. Microsoft documents a browser-based setup using Edge in SteamOS, so you can stream Xbox games without replacing the Deck’s operating system. Installing Windows makes more sense when you also need Windows-only software, launchers, games, or peripherals and are willing to manage drivers and unsupported Windows-on-Steam-Hardware issues.
Neither route has established evidence of delivering better cloud-streaming performance. Your practical decision depends on whether avoiding an operating-system change matters more than having broad Windows compatibility, plus your Game Pass eligibility and internet quality.

Choose the SteamOS browser route if Xbox Cloud Gaming is the main objective. Choose Windows only when you have additional Windows-specific needs that justify installation, driver work, and weaker vendor support.
| Decision point | SteamOS with Edge | Windows installation |
|---|---|---|
| What runs | Xbox Cloud Gaming in a browser while SteamOS remains installed | Windows software runs on the Deck; cloud gaming still follows Xbox service requirements |
| Setup burden | Desktop Mode, Edge from Discover, Steam shortcut, and controller configuration | Windows installation, model-specific drivers, updates, and hardware troubleshooting |
| Official support position | Microsoft’s guide uses a community-maintained Edge Flatpak and says Edge on SteamOS is not officially supported | Steam provides Windows resources as-is and says it cannot offer Windows-on-Steam-Hardware support |
| Dual-boot status | SteamOS stays in place | Steam’s current resources say the SteamOS dual-boot installer is not yet available |
| Internet and account needs | Eligible cloud-gaming entitlement plus a stable connection | The same Xbox entitlement and connection requirements; Windows does not supply them |
| Recovery | No operating-system replacement is required | SteamOS recovery tools exist, but the full wipe-and-install path deletes local data |
The comparison is therefore about disruption and compatibility, not a proven frame-rate or latency advantage. The available official material does not establish that Windows makes Xbox Cloud Gaming perform better.

Can you play Xbox Cloud Gaming on Steam Deck without installing Windows?
Yes. Microsoft provides a Steam Deck procedure that opens Xbox Cloud Gaming through Microsoft Edge in SteamOS. It is a browser solution rather than a native Xbox application or a Windows installation.
The service still requires an eligible subscription and account. Xbox Wire’s December 19, 2025 guide lists cloud gaming as a benefit of Game Pass Essential, Premium, and Ultimate plans and identifies Steam Deck support as being in beta. Plan names, benefits, and regional availability can change, so check the current Xbox offering for your country before subscribing.

How do you set up Xbox Cloud Gaming in SteamOS?
Microsoft’s documented sequence uses SteamOS Desktop Mode, the Edge package available through Discover, and a Steam shortcut that opens the cloud-gaming site. A mouse and keyboard make the setup easier, although Microsoft also describes using the Deck’s built-in controls, touchscreen, and trackpads.
- Enable Desktop Mode. In Gaming Mode, open Settings > Interface and check Enable access to the Linux desktop. Use the power menu to switch to the desktop.
- Install Edge from Discover. Open the Discover software center, search for Microsoft Edge, and install the package referenced by Microsoft’s Steam Deck instructions.
- Add Edge to Steam. In Desktop Mode, use Steam’s option to add a non-Steam game and select the installed Edge browser so it can be launched from Gaming Mode.
- Apply the controller-access configuration. Microsoft’s guide includes a udev override that gives the browser access to the Deck’s controls. Treat that configuration as part of Microsoft’s documented procedure rather than copying an unverified command from a forum.
- Set the launch target. Configure the Steam shortcut to open
xbox.com/play, following the arguments and formatting in Microsoft’s current guide. The exact syntax is worth checking against the live documentation because browser packages and Steam shortcut fields can change. - Choose a controller layout. Use Microsoft’s recommended layout or adjust the Steam Input bindings so the Deck controls behave as a gamepad while the browser is running.
- Return to Gaming Mode and test. Launch the new shortcut, sign in, select a cloud-capable title, and verify that controls and audio work before changing additional system settings.
This approach leaves your normal SteamOS environment intact. It does not turn locally installed Windows games into cloud games, and it cannot bypass the Xbox account, subscription, or regional requirements.
What is the support limitation with Edge on SteamOS?
Microsoft explicitly cautions that the Edge package used in its instructions is a community-maintained Flatpak. Microsoft’s wording is: “Microsoft does not actively maintain the Microsoft Edge Flatpak package and does not provide official support Microsoft Edge on SteamOS at this time.”
That qualification matters if an update changes the browser interface, breaks controller access, or causes a shortcut to stop launching. The setup is documented, but the package itself is not maintained as an officially supported Microsoft Edge build for SteamOS. Keep the official instructions available and expect to recheck them after major SteamOS, Edge, or Steam client updates.

Windows changes the Deck from a SteamOS-first handheld into a Windows PC. The process is more than copying an installer: you must prepare installation media, install Windows, add the correct Deck drivers, and maintain the result yourself.
Installation and driver work
Steam says other operating systems can be installed because the Deck is a PC, but Windows requires additional drivers. Its Windows Resources page provides separate driver material for LCD and OLED models. Use the page for the exact model you own rather than assuming one package fits both versions.

Steam also notes that Windows installation may need internet access to enter a product key and points to a USB-C hub with Ethernet when Wi-Fi drivers are not yet available at that stage. The hub is an optional installation aid, not a general Xbox Cloud Gaming requirement.
Dual-boot expectations
Steam’s current Windows resources state that “Dual-Boot with SteamOS [is] not yet available” and explain that the SteamOS installer with a dual-boot wizard is not ready. Do not treat a polished, officially supported dual-boot menu as part of the standard Steam process. Any partitioning or third-party boot arrangement adds its own maintenance and recovery risks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Steam’s published warning is: “We are providing these resources as is and are unfortunately unable to offer ‘Windows on Steam Hardware’ support.” Windows itself has its own support channels, but Steam cannot be expected to diagnose every interaction among Windows updates, Deck firmware, drivers, launchers, and handheld controls.
Which Windows details differ between LCD and OLED Steam Deck models?
Steam lists different driver resources for the LCD and OLED models, so model identification should be the first step before downloading anything. The OLED notes include a BIOS prerequisite for Bluetooth operation. Those notes also describe Bluetooth audio as output-only while microphone functionality was still being worked on in the stated documentation.
Driver and firmware notes can change. Check Steam’s current Windows page immediately before installation, and read the notes for your model rather than relying on an older guide written for the other Deck version.
Does installing Windows improve Xbox Cloud Gaming performance?
There is no source-backed basis for promising that it does. The documented SteamOS method and the Windows resources address setup and compatibility, not a controlled comparison of latency, image quality, frame pacing, or bitrate.

Cloud performance is dominated by the service path between your Deck and the streaming servers, your local network, and the behavior of the browser or client. Moving to Windows may be worthwhile for compatibility with other software, but it should not be presented as a performance upgrade for Xbox Cloud Gaming.
What subscription and internet connection do you need?
Xbox Wire’s December 2025 getting-started guide says cloud gaming is included with Game Pass Essential, Premium, and Ultimate plans and recommends at least 20 Mbps for a stable cloud-gaming connection. That figure is a vendor recommendation, not a guarantee of low latency or uninterrupted play.
Rank #3
- Operating System: SteamOS 3.0
- Account: Sign in with the Microsoft account that has the eligible cloud-gaming entitlement.
- Plan: Confirm that your selected Game Pass tier includes cloud gaming in your region; names and benefits can change.
- Device status: Xbox Wire listed Steam Deck support as beta in the December 19, 2025 guide.
- Connection: Treat 20 Mbps as a minimum recommendation from Xbox Wire, while recognizing that latency, congestion, Wi-Fi interference, and household traffic can still affect play.
Installing Windows does not grant Game Pass access and does not remove the browser, account, or network requirements.
What are the advantages and costs of staying with SteamOS?
Advantages
- You avoid replacing or repartitioning the operating system.
- Your normal SteamOS interface and Steam Deck workflow remain available.
- The documented path uses software already available through Discover and Steam.
- Returning to ordinary SteamOS use does not require restoring a Windows installation.
Trade-offs
- The Edge Flatpak is community maintained rather than officially supported by Microsoft on SteamOS.
- Browser shortcuts and controller mappings may need attention after software changes.
- Cloud gaming remains dependent on an eligible plan and a reliable network.
- This route does not provide native Windows compatibility for unrelated applications or games.
When is installing Windows the more sensible choice?
Windows is defensible when Xbox Cloud Gaming is only one part of a broader requirement. Examples include a Windows-only application used for work, a launcher or anti-cheat arrangement that does not support SteamOS, or a peripheral whose vendor supplies Windows software only.
Before installing, confirm that the Windows-specific benefit is important enough to justify driver maintenance and the lack of Steam’s Windows-on-Hardware support. If the only reason is the hope of better cloud latency, the evidence does not support the change.
How can you return to SteamOS if Windows causes problems?
Steam provides both a repair path and a full re-imaging path. They are not equivalent.
Repair SteamOS
Steam’s recovery environment includes a Repair SteamOS option intended to attempt preservation of games and personal content. It is the less destructive choice when the goal is to repair the existing installation.
Wipe Device and Install SteamOS
The Wipe Device & Install SteamOS route fully erases the device and reinstalls the stock operating system. Back up important saves, documents, and other local data before using it. Cloud synchronization does not protect files that were never uploaded.
Because recovery choices can remove data, prepare the backup before experimenting with partitions, boot managers, or Windows drivers.
What should you check before choosing either route?
- Define the goal. If the goal is only Xbox Cloud Gaming, start with the SteamOS browser method. If you need Windows software independently, document those requirements first.
- Verify service eligibility. Check the current Game Pass tier and regional cloud availability on the Microsoft account you will use.
- Measure your network conditions. Compare your connection with Xbox Wire’s 20 Mbps recommendation, then consider latency and congestion rather than speed alone.
- Identify your Deck model. OLED and LCD Windows driver resources are not interchangeable assumptions.
- Plan input and accessories. A mouse and keyboard can simplify Edge setup; a USB-C hub with Ethernet can help when Windows installation lacks Wi-Fi drivers at the relevant stage.
- Make a recovery backup. Keep personal data elsewhere before installing Windows or using any wipe option.
- Read current official notes. Steam’s dual-boot status, model-specific drivers, Xbox plan terms, and beta labels can change.
What problems are most likely, and how should you respond?
The browser opens but the Deck controls do not work
Recheck the controller-access step in Microsoft’s documented Steam Deck procedure and the Steam Input layout assigned to the shortcut. Avoid substituting a random udev rule from an old post for the current instructions.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Windows has no Wi-Fi during setup
Steam’s installation notes warn that Wi-Fi drivers may not yet be available at that point. A USB-C hub with Ethernet can provide the wired connection needed to continue, after which you can install the appropriate model-specific drivers.
Bluetooth behaves differently on an OLED model
Read the OLED driver notes, including the BIOS prerequisite. The published notes describe Bluetooth audio as output-only while microphone support was still being developed in that documentation.
You want to undo Windows
Use Steam’s recovery documentation and distinguish repair from re-imaging. The full wipe-and-install option deletes local data, so do not select it until backups are complete.
Cloud play remains unstable despite adequate speed
The 20 Mbps figure is only a recommended connection speed. Investigate latency, wireless interference, congestion, and other traffic on the connection; changing operating systems is not an evidence-based fix for those conditions.
Which choice fits your situation?
| Your priority | More appropriate starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Cloud Gaming with minimal system disruption | SteamOS plus Edge | Uses the documented browser route and preserves the existing SteamOS installation |
| Windows-only applications or launchers are essential | Windows installation | Provides the operating system those applications require, with driver and support work accepted |
| Hoping for lower streaming latency | Neither change is proven to help | No official comparative evidence establishes a Windows performance advantage |
| Concern about losing local files | SteamOS route, or a thoroughly backed-up Windows plan | The full SteamOS re-image wipes the device |
| Need a supported dual-boot wizard | Wait and verify current Steam status | Steam’s published resources currently say the dual-boot installer is not ready |
For most Deck owners asking specifically about Xbox Cloud Gaming, retain SteamOS and follow Microsoft’s browser setup. Install Windows when it solves a separate, concrete compatibility problem—not as an assumed cloud-performance upgrade.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Xbox Cloud Gaming on a Steam Deck with only the built-in controls?
Yes. Microsoft’s setup guidance describes the Deck’s controls, touchscreen, and trackpads as alternatives to a mouse and keyboard. A physical keyboard and mouse are convenience tools for configuring the browser shortcut, not stated prerequisites for playing.
Is the 20 Mbps recommendation a guarantee that cloud games will be smooth?
No. It is Xbox Wire’s general recommendation for a stable connection. Latency, routing, wireless interference, and competing traffic can still produce delay or image-quality changes at higher measured speeds.
Should I install Windows on an OLED Deck using an LCD driver guide?
No. Steam publishes separate Windows resources for OLED and LCD hardware, and the OLED notes include their own BIOS and Bluetooth qualifications. Use the current instructions matching the exact model.
What should I back up before experimenting with Windows or SteamOS recovery?
Copy important local saves, documents, screenshots, and configuration files to another device or service before changing partitions. Steam’s full “Wipe Device & Install SteamOS” recovery path removes local data, even if some game content is otherwise recoverable.
