What is a triple-stack achievement game?
A triple-stack is one substantially unchanged game released as three platform versions—Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows PC—with separate achievement lists. A player can therefore complete nearly identical content three times and collect repeated Gamerscore.
“Shovelware” is a player label for low-effort games released mainly to fill a catalogue or sell easy achievements. Why did Xbox act now?
Achievement-tracking data indicates that the volume of easy-achievement releases rose sharply. TrueAchievements data reported by Windows Central estimated more than 2,200 Xbox games launched in 2025, with over 880—about 39%—designed around easy achievements. That estimate was 204% higher than the 290 such releases counted in 2024.
Across games, add-ons and downloadable content, more than 64,000 achievements worth over 3.5 million Gamerscore were added in 2025. TrueAchievements estimated that 21,601 of those achievements, worth over 2 million Gamerscore, came from shovelware. These are estimates from achievement-tracking data, not an official Microsoft census.

Triple-stack releases rose from 37 in 2024 to 246 in 2025. TrueAchievements counted 233 in 2026 at the time of its October report, and estimated that triple stacks supplied roughly 2.3 million Gamerscore in 2025 when downloadable content and title updates were included.
Microsoft’s related 2025 bundle policy also bars bundles made only from different platform SKUs unless they contain meaningful content or technical differentiation. In a warning quoted by GameSpot, Microsoft wrote: “Attempts to manipulate the Store search results may result in bundles being delisted.” That statement is a policy warning about manipulation, not a declaration that every triple-stack game will be removed.
How are developers expected to handle legitimate multi-platform releases?
When versions genuinely need to exist separately, the reported guidance points developers toward a single product using Xbox Play Anywhere or “game binding.” These mechanisms can associate platform versions so services such as achievements, saves and multiplayer work from one linked product identity. Games with genuinely distinct experiences can still use Xbox services under the reported policy.
Microsoft’s formal requirements also say that a title using one title ID across platforms should share its achievement set, with limited discretion for platform-specific achievements. Will Xbox delist easy Gamerscore games?

Will Xbox stop duplicate Xbox One, Series X|S and PC releases?
