Xbox Energy-Saving Settings That Reduce Standby Power Use

By VGSources Team 8 min read

To minimize the electricity your Xbox uses while it is off, open Settings > General > Power options and select Shutdown (energy saving). This is Microsoft’s lowest-standby-power mode. Choose Sleep instead only when faster wake-up, remote readiness or scheduled availability matters more than the smallest possible off-state draw.

What “off” means on an Xbox

An Xbox that appears to be off can either be fully shut down or remain in a low-power standby state. The distinction matters because the console may keep parts of its system ready for updates, remote commands, accessories or a faster wake-up. Those features consume electricity even though the screen is dark.

On current Xbox consoles, Microsoft calls the two relevant choices Shutdown (energy saving) and Sleep. Shutdown is the power-saving state. Sleep is the convenience state. The setting applies to the console’s off-state behavior; it does not reduce the electricity used while you are actively playing.

Microsoft’s published guidance says Shutdown uses up to 20 times less power than Sleep when the console is off. The Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S EcoProfiles separately report that Shutdown uses 95% less power. These are manufacturer figures for the stated modes, not a promise that every household, outlet or accessory will show exactly the same reading.

Shutdown versus Sleep: the practical differences

Mode Best for Off-state energy implication Convenience trade-off
Shutdown (energy saving) Lowest standby or off-state electricity use Up to 20 times less power than Sleep while off; Series X and Series S EcoProfiles report 95% less power Cold starts take longer than waking from Sleep, and some always-ready features are unavailable
Sleep Fast wake-up, remote readiness and scheduled availability Higher off-state draw than Shutdown during configured active hours Consumes more standby power, although active-hours scheduling can force a full shutdown when the console is not expected to be used

There is no universal boot-time number in Microsoft’s guidance. The exact wake experience depends on the console model, installed software, connected devices and what the system has to resume. The meaningful choice is therefore between lower energy use and a more immediately available console, not between two guaranteed start-up times.

How to stop an Xbox using most of its standby power

  1. From the Xbox dashboard, open Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Choose Power options.
  4. Select Shutdown (energy saving).
  5. Confirm the selection if the console presents a confirmation prompt, then return to the dashboard.

After this change, pressing the power button or controller button will start the console from a full shutdown state rather than waking it from Sleep. Allow extra time for a cold start, and do not interpret that slower start as a fault.

Microsoft can change menu wording and defaults in system updates. Reopen Settings > General > Power options after a major update to verify that Shutdown is still selected. The labels and figures described here reflect Microsoft’s published guidance accessed on October 19, 2026.

Should you use Sleep or Shutdown?

Choose Shutdown when electricity use is the priority

Shutdown is the appropriate default for a console that may sit unused for many hours, a second console that is rarely played, or a household trying to reduce idle consumption. It is also the better choice when the Xbox is connected to a smart plug, battery backup or off-grid power system where every standby watt matters.

Shutdown does not mean the console can never update. Microsoft states that Shutdown (energy saving) enables carbon-aware updates and supports system and game updates. The console can wake or power on as needed for supported update activity, then return to its low-power state. Update timing and availability can vary, so do not assume every download will occur immediately while the console appears off.

Choose Sleep when instant availability is worth the extra draw

Sleep is useful when you regularly resume play throughout the day, use remote features that require the console to be ready, or depend on a scheduled availability window. It keeps more of the system prepared for a quick wake-up, but that readiness has an energy cost.

Sleep is not an all-or-nothing decision. You can set active hours so the console remains in Sleep when you are likely to use it and fully shuts down outside that period.

Using active hours to limit Sleep consumption

Microsoft says Sleep active hours default to always active unless you change them. With that default, the console can remain in its higher-draw standby state around the clock. Setting a realistic schedule prevents that.

  1. Open Settings on the Xbox dashboard.
  2. Go to General > Power options.
  3. Keep Sleep selected.
  4. Find the active hours setting and change it from Always active to a schedule that matches your normal use.
  5. Set the start and end times for the days or hours when you want fast wake-up and remote readiness.
  6. Save the schedule and check it after changing time-zone or daylight-saving settings.

When active hours end, Microsoft says the Xbox fully shuts down. Its April 2023 Xbox guidance gives an example of approximately 0.5 watts after configured Sleep active hours end, compared with 10–15 watts while active. The 10–15-watt figure describes a powered-on console doing active work, not the normal Sleep draw, so it should not be used as a direct Sleep-versus-Shutdown measurement.

During active hours, Sleep remains the selected standby behavior. Outside active hours, the console moves to a full shutdown state, reducing the time it spends in the higher-consumption mode. If you try to wake the console remotely outside the schedule, it may not be available until you start it locally or change the schedule.

Can an Xbox download updates in energy-saving mode?

Yes. Microsoft’s current guidance says Shutdown (energy saving) supports system and game updates. This removes the old assumption that choosing the lowest-power setting necessarily disables background updating. It also allows Microsoft to use carbon-aware timing for supported updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There are still practical limits. An update may wait for a scheduled rollout, a network connection, storage space, an external drive state or other system conditions. A console that is unplugged, disconnected from the network or switched off at a power strip cannot download anything. If an update is urgent, start the Xbox normally and check My games & apps > Manage > Updates rather than relying on the off-state behavior.

Sleep can keep the console ready for more immediate remote activity, but its higher standby use is the price of that readiness. Shutdown remains the lower-energy choice even though it can still receive supported updates.

How many watts does an Xbox use in standby?

The answer depends on the mode, the console generation and whether the system is actually idle. Microsoft does not publish one universal standby number that applies to every Xbox model and every connected setup.

  • For a current Xbox using Sleep active-hours scheduling, Microsoft’s April 2023 guidance says the console draws about 0.5 watts after active hours end, when it has fully shut down.
  • The same guidance lists 10–15 watts while active; that is operating consumption, not standby consumption.
  • Microsoft describes Energy Saver as using about 20 times less power than Standby when the console is not being used or receiving updates in its 2022 Xbox Wire statement.
  • In 2023 guidance, Microsoft says Shutdown uses up to 20 times less power than Sleep while the console is off.
  • The Xbox Series X EcoProfile and Series S EcoProfile each report 95% less power in Shutdown (energy saving) mode.

“Up to 20 times” and “95% less” are comparative manufacturer claims under the conditions Microsoft states; they are not a guaranteed household meter reading. A television, USB accessories, network equipment and an external storage device can continue drawing power even after the Xbox changes mode. To measure your complete setup, use a plug-in power meter at the outlet and test the console with the same accessories connected in each mode.

Estimating the energy saved

For a simple estimate, multiply watts by hours and divide by 1,000 to convert watt-hours to kilowatt-hours:

energy (kWh) = power (watts) × time (hours) ÷ 1,000

Use the meter’s reading for your own console whenever possible. If you only have Microsoft’s published comparison, treat it as an order-of-magnitude guide rather than a bill forecast. Your electricity price, the number of hours the console is unused, update activity and connected equipment determine the actual cost.

For example, a console left in Sleep for a long period may spend most of that time in its higher standby state, while a console using Shutdown spends nearly all unused time in the lower-power state. Active-hours scheduling can reduce the first period without giving up Sleep during the hours when you actually need it.

What changed from older Xbox generations?

Energy-saving behavior has improved across generations, but the controls and measurements are not interchangeable. Microsoft’s energy-efficiency information says Xbox 360 standby was reduced to less than 0.3 watts. It also says an Xbox One configured for energy saving could reduce standby use by 98%.

Troubleshooting: when the Xbox still seems to use power

The console wakes or remains active

  • Recheck Settings > General > Power options and confirm the selected mode.
  • If Sleep is selected, inspect active hours. The default can be Always active.
  • Check whether an update, installation, game sync or system maintenance task is running.
  • Look for accessories that remain powered through USB or an attached external drive.

Remote features no longer work

That behavior can be expected after switching to Shutdown or after active hours end. Sleep is the mode intended for faster wake and remote readiness. If remote access is essential, use Sleep and narrow active hours to the times you need it rather than leaving the console active all day.

The console starts more slowly

A slower start is normal after selecting Shutdown because the Xbox is booting from a fully shut-down state. Let the startup process finish, then check for system updates if the delay is unusually long or accompanied by an error. Do not switch back to Sleep solely to avoid a normal cold boot if minimizing standby electricity is your main goal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A wall meter shows a different number

Meter readings vary with model, firmware, update activity, network state, power-supply efficiency and connected equipment. Measure after the console has been idle long enough to settle, repeat the test at the same time of day, and record whether the console is in Sleep, within active hours or fully shut down. Compare like with like.

A practical decision checklist

  • Select Shutdown (energy saving) if your first priority is the lowest possible off-state electricity use.
  • Select Sleep if quick wake-up or remote readiness is more important than minimum standby consumption.
  • If you use Sleep, replace the Always active default with active hours that match your schedule.
  • Keep the Xbox connected to the network if you want supported updates while using Shutdown.
  • Recheck the setting after major system updates because Microsoft may revise labels or defaults.
  • Measure the complete console setup, including USB devices and external storage, when investigating household power use.
