The current Xbox US plan page instead presents Essential as its entry tier, with a different feature set. Names, games, availability and prices vary by market, so check the plan and terms shown in your local Xbox store before subscribing.
What is Xbox Game Pass Core?
Core is a paid Xbox subscription built around online console multiplayer. Xbox says members can play online with friends, family and the wider Xbox community. Its regional Core page also describes a curated catalogue of over 25 games and discounts on selected games. Those benefits are described on Xbox’s regional Game Pass Core page; the exact catalogue and offers are not fixed guarantees.
Xbox Wire called Core “the evolution of Xbox Live Gold” in its August 2, 2023 launch announcement. That describes the plan’s relationship to the former service at launch, not a guarantee that Core has the same name or terms in every market today: Xbox Wire’s 2023 announcement.
What does Game Pass Core include?
- Online console multiplayer: play supported multiplayer games online on Xbox consoles.
- A curated game catalogue: Xbox’s regional Core page says it includes over 25 games. The available titles can change.
- Member deals: discounts on selected games are described as a membership benefit; the selection and terms can vary.
Xbox cautions that titles, catalogue size, features and availability vary over time and by region, plan and platform. Check the regional Core page and current games catalogue for the titles available where you live.

Does Core include new games on release day?
The Core description is a curated catalogue, not a promise that new releases will be included on launch day. Xbox’s current US plan page explicitly says Essential does not include new releases on day one. Do not assume that Core or Essential provides day-one access; check the terms for the specific tier in your market.
Core and Essential: what is the difference?
The plan naming and feature descriptions on Xbox’s surfaced pages are not uniform. Regional Xbox pages still describe Core, while the current US page calls its entry plan Essential and lists features beyond those stated on the Core pages. Xbox’s US Essential listing includes 50+ games across console, PC and supported devices, cloud playtime, in-game benefits, online console multiplayer and Rewards points. It says new releases are not included on day one: Xbox US Game Pass plans.

This is a comparison of what those pages state, not confirmation that Core and Essential are universally interchangeable or that every feature applies in every country. The available information does not establish whether Essential has replaced Core in every market or what happens to existing Core subscribers. Confirm the plan name, migration or renewal terms, and included benefits in your local Xbox account or store.
Which devices and regions support Core?
The regional Core product information identifies Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S for its console game catalogue. The current US Essential page lists console, PC and supported devices, but that should not be read as a platform claim for Core everywhere. Xbox directs customers to check supported regions and the local catalogue because availability differs by market. Use the regional Core page for the relevant country and verify the subscription in the local store before purchase.

How much does Game Pass Core cost?
There is no dependable universal current price in the available official listings. Xbox’s regional Core pages have shown different monthly prices, and surfaced US listings have not agreed. Prices may vary by country and change over time; check the price displayed in your local Xbox store rather than relying on an old figure.
For historical context only, Xbox Wire listed launch pricing on August 2, 2023, as $9.99 USD per month or $59.99 USD per year. Those are launch-era figures, not current prices: Xbox Wire’s announcement.

How does billing and cancellation work?
An Xbox store listing describes Core as a recurring subscription that continues unless cancelled through the Microsoft account. Before buying or renewing, review the current price, renewal frequency and cancellation instructions shown for your account and country. The local store and account terms determine the applicable process.
Is Game Pass Core worth it?
Core is most relevant if you want online multiplayer on an Xbox console and value access to its rotating curated game catalogue and selected member deals. If you want PC access, cloud playtime or other benefits, compare the tiers actually offered in your market; the US Essential page lists those features, but that is not evidence they apply to Core in every region. Base the decision on the current local plan description and the games you intend to play.
