How the plans differ in practical terms

Essential is the entry point for console players who want a smaller catalog, online console multiplayer, and some cloud access at the lowest listed price. Premium costs $5 more per month than Essential and expands the advertised catalog from 50-plus to 200-plus games, while adding the promise that selected Xbox-published games arrive within one year of launch. Ultimate costs $8 more than Premium and adds the largest advertised catalog, selected day-one releases, and three named service bundles. PC Game Pass sits between Essential and Premium in price, but its focus is Windows PC play rather than console access.

Those price differences matter only if you use the additional features. Someone who plays one or two included console games locally may not benefit from Ultimate’s extra services. A player who regularly streams games, wants EA Play or Ubisoft+ Classics, or intends to try selected releases on launch day may find the higher tier more relevant. Compare the plan on the device you actually use, not just the number of games shown in a marketing headline.

Which Game Pass plan should I choose?

Start with the device you actually use and the specific games you want to play. Then weigh multiplayer, cloud hours, release timing, and bundled services against the recurring price. Xbox’s own guidance is that there is no single plan that is best for everyone.

Choose Essential if you want a lower-cost console plan

Essential is the lowest-priced listed US plan. Its store page advertises 50+ games, online console multiplayer, cloud gaming, and in-game benefits and rewards. The page names Stardew Valley, Fallout 4, and Deep Rock Galactic as examples; check the live catalog to confirm whether a specific title is available on your device and plan.

Essential is also the simplest way to get a cloud-enabled tier without paying for the larger Premium or Ultimate catalogs. Beginning in November 2026, however, its announced monthly cloud allowance is the smallest at five hours. If you expect to stream frequently, compare that allowance with your likely play time rather than choosing solely on the monthly price.

Choose Premium for a larger catalog without Ultimate’s full bundle

Premium lists 200+ games and includes cloud gaming and online console multiplayer. Xbox says select new games published by Xbox join within one year of launch. That is a timing promise for selected games, not a guarantee that every new release will be available at launch or within a fixed number of days.

Premium’s announced cloud allowance is 10 hours per month from November 2026. It can suit a player who wants more catalog depth and more streaming time than Essential but does not need Ultimate’s EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, or selected day-one offer. Read the individual game listing carefully: the one-year statement applies to selected Xbox-published games, not the entire publishing slate or games from every partner.

Choose Ultimate if its extras matter to you

Ultimate has the largest listed catalog at 500+ games and bundles cloud gaming, online console multiplayer, EA Play, Fortnite Crew, and Ubisoft+ Classics. It also includes selected day-one releases, but the day-one claim is not universal: the current page excludes Call of Duty titles. The bundle benefits have their own catalogs and terms, so inclusion of a service does not put every game from that service in the main Game Pass catalog or make every title streamable.

Ultimate has the highest announced cloud allowance, at 15 hours per month beginning in November 2026. That may be important for people using a phone, browser-capable device, handheld, console, or PC as a streaming client. It is still an allowance, not a promise of unlimited cloud play. Xbox says additional time will be purchasable through the Xbox Store after the included hours are used, but it had not published the price or full purchase terms in the announcement.

Choose PC Game Pass for a PC-focused subscription

PC Game Pass lists 300+ PC games, selected day-one releases, and EA Play. Its US page describes PC play rather than the cloud gaming benefit listed for Essential, Premium, and Ultimate. If streaming games is a deciding factor, compare the exact local plan descriptions before subscribing instead of assuming PC Game Pass includes the same cloud access.

PC Game Pass is therefore not simply a cheaper version of Ultimate for every player. It may be the better fit for someone who plays installed PC games and wants EA Play, while a console player needs to consider online console multiplayer and console catalog access separately. Confirm the platform shown for each title before counting it as part of your setup.

How much cloud gaming does Game Pass include?

Essential, Premium, and Ultimate include cloud gaming. Xbox announced on September 3, 2026, that beginning in November 2026 those plans will have monthly included allowances of 5, 10, and 15 hours, respectively. The announcement does not establish a precise start date within November or the price and terms for buying additional hours.

These allowances are announced to begin in November 2026, not a description of a settled year-round entitlement under earlier terms. Xbox says additional cloud playtime will be purchasable through the Xbox Store after included hours are used. It also says hours, purchase options, and features may vary by market, and that it will share pricing and further details before the change takes effect. Xbox estimates that the change is expected to affect 4% of Game Pass subscribers. That is Xbox’s estimate; the announcement does not give a methodology for it. Team Xbox acknowledged the change directly: “We recognize that introducing limits is a meaningful change, particularly for players who regularly spend more time gaming through the cloud.”

What the hour allowance does and does not tell you

The published figures tell you the amount of included cloud play in each tier, but they do not specify whether unused hours roll over, how a session is measured, or what additional-hour packages will cost. Do not assume any of those terms. Xbox also says available hours, purchasing options, and features can vary by market. Check the account and store information shown in your location when the change is implemented.

The 4% figure is an estimate from Xbox about the share of subscribers expected to be affected. It is not an independent usage study and should not be read as a guarantee about your own play pattern. A person who streams occasionally may stay within an allowance, while a household using cloud gaming as its primary way to play may reach the limit quickly.

What devices can I use for cloud gaming?

Xbox describes cloud play on compatible, internet-connected devices, including Xbox One and later consoles, Windows PCs, Macs, Chromebooks, gaming handhelds, Steam Deck, and Android phones and tablets. Compatibility depends on the device, operating system, supported region, and game; the list should not be treated as a guarantee that every device or title works everywhere. Xbox’s December 2025 guide also described Steam Deck support as beta at that time, so check current support information rather than assuming its status has not changed.

Cloud play requires a compatible game and an internet-connected device in a supported region. Xbox describes support for a variety of controllers and other input methods. A compatible Xbox controller is one option, but compatibility depends on the particular device and game. Xbox also says some games you own outside the Game Pass catalog can be streamed. That is a limited feature, not a promise that every owned game or every subscription title is cloud-enabled.

What you need for a practical cloud setup

• A supported region: Cloud gaming is not automatically available in every country. Confirm local availability first.
• A supported device and operating system: Xbox’s device guidance can change, and a device listed in an older guide may have a different status now.
• An eligible game: A title can be in a subscription catalog without being enabled for cloud play, and platform availability can differ.
• An input method: A compatible Xbox wireless controller is one option, but verify compatibility with your device and the game. Other supported input methods may work for particular titles.

Do new games arrive on Game Pass on release day?

Some selected releases are advertised as day-one additions on Ultimate and PC Game Pass; Premium has a different timing statement for selected Xbox-published games. Neither statement means every new game from Xbox or its partners arrives at launch.

One important exception concerns future Call of Duty games. In its April 21, 2026 price update, Xbox said future entries would no longer join Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch and would instead be added during the following holiday season, about a year later. How do I check whether a particular game is included?

Use the live catalog rather than relying on a headline count or an old list. Xbox warns that game titles, counts, features, and availability vary over time, by region, by plan, and by platform.

1. Open the Xbox Game Pass catalog for your region.
2. Search for the exact game title, then use the available plan and platform filters to narrow the results.
3. Confirm that the game is included with your plan on the device you intend to use. Console, PC, and cloud availability are not interchangeable.
4. Check the listing again before subscribing or downloading if availability is decisive; catalog membership can change.

This check is especially important for bundled services. EA Play or Ubisoft+ Classics being included in a plan does not guarantee that every game in those services is also included in the main Game Pass catalog, available in your region, or playable through cloud gaming.

When a particular game is the reason you are considering Game Pass, verify four separate points: whether the title is in the catalog now, which plan includes it, whether your platform is supported, and whether cloud play is enabled if you intend to stream. A game may satisfy the first two points but still require a download on console or PC. Conversely, some games you own separately may be streamable even though they are not part of the subscription catalog. Treat each listing as the authority for that title.

What should I know before subscribing?
