The claim that Xbox is adding a new “Standard” plan while raising Game Pass prices is outdated and misleading. Game Pass Standard was introduced in the United States in 2024. Xbox’s later official materials use Essential, Premium, Ultimate, and PC Game Pass. The latest verified U.S. price change, announced on April 21, 2026, actually reduced Ultimate from $29.99 to $22.99 per month and PC Game Pass from $16.49 to $13.99 per month. The trade-off was significant: future Call of Duty games would no longer be promised at launch on Ultimate or PC Game Pass.
Plan names, prices, catalogs, cloud access, and availability vary by country, platform, account, and time. Check the official Xbox Game Pass comparison page for the current offer in your region.

What changed, and when?
Several separate Game Pass changes have been combined into one inaccurate headline. The timeline is:

- September 10, 2024: Game Pass Standard launched publicly in the United States. It combined a substantial console catalog with online console multiplayer and member discounts, but did not include new releases on day one.
- By 2025–2026: Xbox communications began using Essential and Premium alongside Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Xbox’s later materials use Premium where earlier coverage referred to Standard, although the supplied official sources do not establish a precise rename date.
- April 21, 2026: Xbox reduced the U.S. monthly prices of Ultimate and PC Game Pass, while changing the day-one policy for future Call of Duty games.

Was Game Pass Standard a new 2026 plan?
No. Standard was a 2024 console-focused tier. Its U.S. launch price was $14.99 per month, and it was aimed at players who wanted more than the entry-level offering without paying for Ultimate.
Standard included:
- Access to a large console game catalog
- Online console multiplayer
- Member discounts
It did not include:
- New first-party games on day one
- EA Play
- Cloud gaming
- The full set of Ultimate benefits
Some games available immediately through Ultimate could reach Standard later, potentially 12 months or more after release, depending on the title. Therefore, the old “Standard” price should not be treated as the current price of a newly introduced plan.
What are the current Game Pass plans?

| Plan | Best suited to | Main benefits | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | Budget-conscious console players | Console access and online multiplayer benefits, with a smaller included library than higher tiers | Less catalog depth and fewer premium benefits; verify current cloud and catalog details locally |
| Premium | Console players who want a broad catalog but can wait for new releases | A larger console library than Essential and the apparent current successor to the role once associated with Standard | Not the same day-one access as Ultimate; verify current release timing and features |
| Ultimate | Players using Xbox, PC, or cloud gaming | Hundreds of games across console and PC, online console multiplayer, unlimited Xbox Cloud Gaming, major day-one releases, and in-game benefits | Future Call of Duty games are no longer promised at launch |
| PC Game Pass | Windows PC-only players | PC catalog access and day-one first-party releases under the current policy, with EA Play included according to the applicable plan offering | It is not a substitute for console multiplayer or console access |

How much does Game Pass cost now?
The latest verified U.S. reductions announced on April 21, 2026 were:
- Game Pass Ultimate: $22.99 per month, down from $29.99.
- PC Game Pass: $13.99 per month, down from $16.49.
Those figures do not establish the current price of every tier or every market. Taxes, local currency, promotions, legacy subscriptions, prepaid codes, and account eligibility can change what an individual subscriber sees.
That is why “Game Pass prices are increasing” is too broad. Ultimate and PC Game Pass became cheaper in the verified April 2026 U.S. announcement. A reader comparing against an older pre-2025 Ultimate price may still experience the service as more expensive overall, but that is a different comparison.

The price cut came with a Call of Duty change
The April 2026 reduction was not simply a discount with no change in value. Xbox said future Call of Duty games would no longer be included in Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch. Instead, future titles were expected to arrive around the following holiday season, approximately a year after release.

Existing Call of Duty games already in the catalog were not removed by that announcement. The policy applies to future titles, so players who subscribe primarily for launch-day Call of Duty access should factor in the delay before choosing Ultimate or PC Game Pass.
More generally, “day one” means access while the subscription is active and while the game remains included. It does not mean permanent ownership.
Which Game Pass plan should you choose?
Choose Essential if you mainly need console multiplayer
Essential is the logical budget choice if you mostly play games you already own, want online console multiplayer, and are satisfied with a smaller included library. It is less suitable if you regularly sample new releases or want the broadest catalog.
Choose Premium if you want a large console catalog without paying for every launch
Premium is the closest current naming match for readers searching for the old Standard experience. It makes sense for Xbox players who want many included games, can wait for newer titles to arrive, and do not need Ultimate’s full feature set.

Because Xbox’s reviewed sources do not provide an explicit rename notice with an effective date, treat “Premium replaced Standard” as a description of the later naming structure rather than a precisely dated announcement.
Choose Ultimate if you use Xbox, PC, or cloud gaming
Ultimate is the broadest option for players who move between Xbox and PC, use Xbox Cloud Gaming, want major day-one releases, or play enough included games to justify $22.99 per month in the United States. It is less compelling if the main reason for subscribing is the launch-day release of a future Call of Duty game, because that benefit has changed.
Choose PC Game Pass for PC-only play
PC Game Pass is the more targeted choice when you play primarily on Windows and do not need Xbox console access or console multiplayer. Its verified U.S. price is $13.99 per month under the April 21, 2026 announcement. Confirm the current PC catalog, EA Play inclusion, and release policies on the official comparison page.
Buy games individually if you play only a few titles
A subscription is not automatically the cheapest option. Buying games directly may be better if you play only one or two games per year, finish games slowly, want permanent ownership, or are concerned about catalog removals. Compare the annual subscription cost with the price of the games you would actually play, rather than with the theoretical value of the entire catalog.

How to check your own plan and renewal price
- Sign in to the Microsoft or Xbox account used for the subscription.
- Open the account’s subscription-management page.
- Check the plan name, renewal date, renewal price, and recurring-billing status.
- Compare those details with the public Xbox Game Pass comparison page.
- Before downgrading, confirm which benefits disappear and whether the change takes effect immediately or at the next renewal.
Your account may show a different amount because of a legacy plan, promotional period, prepaid code, regional Microsoft Store, taxes, or billing timing. The renewal screen is more reliable for your account than a general headline price.
Why do old pages still mention Standard?
Standard may still appear in search results, screenshots, support material, and subscriber accounts because it launched under that name in 2024. Older articles may not have been updated, and regional pages or existing subscriptions may transition at different times.
An old reference to Standard is therefore not evidence that Xbox is launching a new Standard tier in 2026. Check the current regional comparison page and your account’s subscription screen.

- Catalogs differ by region, platform, and plan.
- Titles and features can change over time.
- A game included on one tier may not be included on another.
- Access ends when the subscription ends or when a title leaves the service.
- Day-one access is subscription access, not ownership.
For those reasons, avoid treating a catalog count or feature list from an old article as permanent. Xbox specifically warns that titles, features, and availability vary.
