An Xbox gift card code usually fails for one of four reasons: the Microsoft account or store is set to a different country, the code is promotional and has expired, the code was already redeemed to another account, or the Microsoft Store/Xbox app needs an update. Sign in to the Microsoft account that should receive the money and try the web redemption page at microsoft.com/redeem. Enter the 25-character code exactly as printed. A retail card bought in the wrong country normally needs a retailer exchange or refund; a persistent technical or account error belongs with Microsoft Support.
What should I do first when an Xbox gift card code does not work?
Use a short diagnostic sequence instead of repeatedly entering the code. Each check rules out a different failure, and it identifies whether the retailer or Microsoft can actually fix the problem.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Confirm the destination account. Check the Microsoft profile or Xbox Gamertag shown in the browser, console, or app. The balance is attached to that Microsoft account, so sign out of any unintended account before trying again.
- Inspect the code format. Xbox gift-card digital codes contain 25 characters. Re-enter every character carefully, paying attention to letters and numbers that look alike, and do not post the code in a forum, chat, screenshot, or social-media message.
- Compare country and currency. A card purchased for one country may not redeem on an account or Microsoft Store set to another country. The issuing country and the store/account country must match.
- Identify the code type. A standard retail gift card does not expire, while a promotional or rewards code can have an expiry date. Microsoft Rewards and Xbox Game Pass Rewards are examples of promotional cards.
- Switch channels. If redemption fails in the console or an app, update the Microsoft Store, Xbox app, or console software and retry on the web at microsoft.com/redeem.
- Route the case correctly. A wrong-country purchase is normally a retailer matter. A technical failure that remains after the checks above is a Microsoft Support matter.
When redemption succeeds, the full card value is added to the selected Microsoft account. The balance can then be used for eligible Microsoft Store purchases on the web, Windows, or Xbox, including games, apps, movies, television, devices, and Xbox-related subscriptions subject to Microsoft’s exclusions.
How do I redeem an Xbox gift card code correctly?
The web route is the clearest way to remove console and app variables. It also makes the receiving account visible before you commit the code.

Redeem through the Microsoft website
- Open microsoft.com/redeem in a browser.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that should receive the balance. Check the profile identity before entering anything.
- Type the 25-character code. Do not add spaces or alter punctuation shown by the redemption form.
- Submit the code and read the confirmation screen. Follow any on-screen prompts rather than closing the page immediately.
- Open the account’s balance or purchase screen afterward and verify that the expected amount was added.
Microsoft says Microsoft and Xbox gift cards, download codes, and tokens use the same basic process: after redemption to a Microsoft account, the balance is spent through Microsoft Store online, Windows, or Xbox. A successful redemption therefore changes the account balance, not the physical card or the console itself.
Why web redemption is useful
A browser attempt separates an account or code problem from an outdated application. If the web page accepts the code while the console does not, the code and account are likely valid and the local app or device needs attention. If the web page returns the same region, expiration, or redemption message, updating an app will not change the underlying restriction.
Why does Xbox say the gift card is the wrong region?
A region error means the card’s issuing country or currency does not match the country associated with the Microsoft account or store. Microsoft’s product FAQ states: “Gift cards are in local currency, so when you buy a gift card it will only work in the country where it was purchased.”
What to compare
- Card origin: Identify the country in which the card was purchased. For a digital code, check the seller’s listing, receipt, or order confirmation.
- Currency: Compare the currency printed or advertised for the card with the currency used by the Microsoft Store account.
- Account/store country: Check the country setting associated with the Microsoft account and the storefront in which you are trying to redeem.
- Purchase location: A code intended for one market is not converted simply because you are traveling or using a different device.
What actually fixes a wrong-region code?
The normal remedy is to return to the retailer and request an exchange or refund for a code intended for the correct country. Microsoft’s guidance says to contact the retailer if the wrong code was purchased. Keep the receipt, order number, and the card or delivery email so the seller can verify the transaction.
Do not treat a VPN, a different download server, or repeated changes of storefront as an official solution. Those actions do not change the card’s issuing currency, and the documented path is a region-matched replacement from the seller. Microsoft Support can explain account or technical issues, but it generally cannot convert a retailer’s country-specific inventory into another market’s currency.

Can an Xbox gift card expire?
A normal Xbox gift card purchased at retail does not expire. Microsoft’s product FAQ says: “No, gift cards purchased at retail never expire. Note that promotional gift cards like those from Microsoft Rewards or XBOX Game Pass Rewards do expire.”
How to classify the code
| Code source | Expiration treatment | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Standard retail Xbox gift card | Does not expire, according to Microsoft’s FAQ | Recheck account, region, format, and redemption channel instead of assuming age caused the failure. |
| Microsoft Rewards promotional card | May expire | Read the reward notice or message that issued the code for its stated deadline. |
| Xbox Game Pass Rewards promotional card | May expire | Use the date supplied with the reward; a retail-card rule does not automatically apply. |
If a retail card produces an expiration-style message, first verify that it is genuinely a retail purchase and not a reward or promotional entitlement. Keep the original purchase evidence; the retailer can investigate an activation or sale issue.
Why does Microsoft say the code was already redeemed?
An already-redeemed message means the 25-character code has previously been applied to a Microsoft account. The most common explanation is that it was redeemed while a different profile was signed in, or that the code came from a seller whose activation history is unclear.
Check the account before assuming theft
- Review the Microsoft profile or Gamertag that was active when the code was entered.
- Check the account balance and purchase history for a recent increase or purchase.
- Ask whether a family member or another person with access to the code used it on a different Microsoft account.
- Compare the redemption time with the receipt or delivery timestamp.
A code cannot be moved by entering it again on another account. If the balance is visible on the account that redeemed it, use that account for eligible purchases. If no authorized person redeemed it, preserve the receipt and contact the retailer first, because the seller controls the sale and code-distribution record.
Protect the code while seeking help
Never publish the complete code or send it to an unverified helper. A code exposed in a public post can be redeemed by someone else, and screenshots can reveal enough information for misuse. Describe the error and provide transaction details through the retailer’s or Microsoft’s official support channel without disclosing the code publicly.

How do I fix the Microsoft Store or Xbox app transaction error?
If the message says, “Unable to complete this transaction. Please update to the latest version of Microsoft Store,” update the software named in the message, restart the device, and try again. Microsoft specifically documents web redemption as the fallback when an app cannot redeem the card.
On a Windows PC
- Open the Microsoft Store and check for available updates to the Store itself.
- Update the Xbox app if it is the channel displaying the error.
- Restart Windows after updates finish, then sign in again to the intended Microsoft account.
- Retry the code. If the transaction still fails, use microsoft.com/redeem in a browser.
On an Xbox console
- Install any pending console system update.
- Confirm that the profile currently signed in is the account that should receive the value.
- Retry redemption from the console.
- If the same transaction message appears, complete the attempt on the web rather than repeating the console entry.
An update can resolve an app-version transaction error, but it will not override a country restriction, an expired promotional code, or a code already attached to another account. Use the message’s wording to choose the next branch rather than applying every fix at random.
Which problem does each error point to?
The table below maps common symptoms to the most likely cause, the next action, and the party that can resolve it. The same code should not be treated as defective until the account, region, and code type have been separated.
| Message or symptom | Likely cause | Next action | Responsible party |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wrong region, country, or currency | Card and account/store markets differ | Request a region-matched exchange or refund | Retailer |
| Expired or no longer valid | Promotional or rewards code past its deadline | Check the reward notice and its expiry terms | Issuing program or retailer, depending on source |
| Already redeemed | Code used on this or another Microsoft account | Check profiles, balance, and purchase history; preserve proof of purchase | Retailer for an unauthorized sale; Microsoft for account-level investigation |
| Unable to complete transaction; update Store | Outdated Microsoft Store, Xbox app, or console software | Update the named software and retry on the web | Microsoft for technical support |
| Code rejected with no clear explanation | Entry error, wrong account, region mismatch, or an unrecognized code type | Repeat the format, account, region, and expiration checks in order | Retailer or Microsoft, depending on the finding |
What can I buy with the redeemed balance?
After successful redemption, Microsoft says the balance can be spent through Microsoft Store online, Windows, or Xbox. Eligible categories include downloadable games, apps, movies, television shows, devices, and Xbox-related subscriptions, but Microsoft’s exclusions and account rules still apply at checkout.

When should I contact the retailer instead of Microsoft?
Contact the retailer when the purchase itself is the problem: you selected the wrong country, received the wrong denomination or product type, the code was already used when sold, or the seller’s delivery record does not match your order. Microsoft’s direct instruction is, “If you bought the wrong code, please contact the retailer.”
Prepare a retailer case
- Receipt, invoice, or order number
- Date and country of purchase
- Advertised currency and denomination
- The exact error message, without posting the full code
- Proof that you tried the intended Microsoft account and the web redemption page
Ask specifically for a code issued for the country and currency of the account, or for a refund under the seller’s policy. A retailer is the party that can verify activation and inventory history for a code it sold.
Prepare a Microsoft Support case
Use Microsoft Support when the code and market are correct but the web page, account, Store, Xbox app, or console continues to fail. Include the account identity, device or app used, software-update status, exact error text, and purchase evidence. Do not put the complete code in a public post or an unsecured message.

First confirm that the browser is signed in to the intended account and that the code has been entered as a 25-character sequence. Then retry after updating the Microsoft Store, Xbox app, or console if one of those displayed the original transaction error. If the web page still rejects a region-correct, non-expired code, stop repeated attempts and give Microsoft Support the exact message and account details.
Repeated submissions do not change a country restriction or revive an expired promotional code. They can also make it harder to tell which account accepted a code, so record the profile and message shown at each attempt.

How can I avoid the next Xbox gift-card failure?
- Buy a card explicitly labeled for the country and currency of the receiving Microsoft account.
- Keep the receipt and the seller’s listing until the balance appears.
- Redeem soon after purchase while the transaction details are easy to verify, especially for promotional codes with deadlines.
- Check the signed-in profile before entering a code intended for another person.
- Use the web redemption page when an app or console reports a transaction-version error.
- Store the code privately and share it only through a verified support process when necessary.
These checks address different failure classes: market compatibility, proof of sale, promotional timing, account ownership, software version, and code security. Treating them separately is faster than assuming every rejected code is expired or defective.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Xbox and Microsoft gift cards redeemed differently?
No. Microsoft says both use the same account-based redemption process, and the resulting balance is spent through Microsoft Store on the web, Windows, or Xbox. The important choice is the Microsoft account that receives the value.
Can I use a gift card bought abroad while I am traveling?
Travel does not change the card’s issuing country or currency. A card purchased for one market can still be rejected when the account or store belongs to another, so obtain a code intended for the account’s market instead.
Should I send my complete code to someone offering help online?
No. A visible code can be redeemed by another person. Keep it private and use only the retailer’s or Microsoft’s verified support channel, sharing the error and transaction evidence without publishing the full code.
What evidence should I keep after buying a digital code?
Save the receipt or order number, purchase country, advertised currency and denomination, delivery message, and the date you tried redemption. Those details let the retailer check activation history without requiring you to expose the code publicly.
