Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Most ROG XBOX Ally and ROG XBOX Ally X connection failures are Windows networking problems, not a unique Xbox defect. Work through the checks in this order: verify Wi‑Fi and Airplane mode, forget and rejoin the network, restart the modem and router, test the other Wi‑Fi band, update the WLAN driver, and only then use Windows 11’s Network reset. If Ethernet works while Wi‑Fi does not, the fault is in the wireless path or router rather than the handheld’s internet service.
The same process also separates a genuine connection fault from an Xbox game that is unsupported, requires an online entitlement, or has a service-side problem. The Ally (2025) model is the ROG XBOX Ally RC73YA, and the Xbox Handheld Compatibility program covers both it and the ROG XBOX Ally X.

What kind of problem are you seeing?
Identify the exact symptom before changing settings. A missing Wi‑Fi switch points to the adapter, driver, or Windows WLAN service. A network that appears but rejects the password is usually an authentication or router issue. “Connected, no internet” means the handheld joined the access point but may not have received a usable address, gateway, DNS response, modem connection, or ISP service. Drops that begin after sleep or while running on battery often implicate the driver or adapter power management.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf only one game reports an online error while browsing and other games work, do not start by replacing router settings. Check that game’s online requirements and its Xbox Handheld Compatibility classification first. Xbox uses four labels—Handheld optimized, Mostly compatible, Unsupported, and Not tested—and those labels describe game behavior on a compatible handheld, not the strength of your radio connection.

Why the Ally uses standard Windows Wi‑Fi fixes
The ROG XBOX Ally is a Windows gaming handheld. Its networking stack, Device Manager, adapter drivers, power settings, and Network reset are therefore the same Windows 11 components used on a laptop. Microsoft’s Network and Internet guidance applies directly. The Xbox layer adds game compatibility, remote-play, cloud-gaming, and account requirements, but it does not replace Windows troubleshooting.
ASUS states that remote play and online console multiplayer require an internet connection. Cloud gaming also has Game Pass and regional or device requirements. A healthy Wi‑Fi link cannot grant an entitlement that an account, region, game, or service does not support.
Use this low-disruption fix order
Start with reversible checks and increase the scope only when the previous step fails. This prevents a Network reset from erasing profiles when a disabled radio or stale password was the real cause.

- Run Windows’ automated diagnostic. Open the Get Help app in Windows 11, search for network or internet problems, and run the Network and Internet troubleshooter. Microsoft says it performs diagnostics and attempts common repairs.
- Check the radio. Open the network panel, make sure Wi‑Fi is on, and turn Airplane mode off. If your network is listed, select it and choose Connect.
- Forget and reconnect. Open Settings > Network & internet > Wi‑Fi > Manage known networks. Select the affected network, choose Forget, then select it again and enter the password.
- Restart the modem and router. Unplug both devices, wait at least about 30 seconds, reconnect the modem first, wait for it to settle, and then reconnect the router. Every device in the home will lose service briefly.
- Test the other band. If the router advertises separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names, join the other one. Range and wall penetration are generally different, and the best band can change by room.
- Update the WLAN driver. Follow the driver procedure below rather than downloading a random package.
- Use Network reset. Do this only after the simpler checks, because it removes installed network adapters and reinstalls them with default settings.
- Check power management. If drops track sleep, wake, or battery operation, clear the adapter’s power-saving shutdown option.
- Prove which layer is failing. Ping the default gateway and, if possible, connect directly to the modem with Ethernet.
Step 1: run the Get Help network diagnostic
Windows 11’s built-in diagnostic is the safest first action because it can inspect common configuration faults without deleting saved networks.
- Open Get Help from the Start menu.
- Enter network and internet troubleshooter in the search box.
- Run the guided diagnostic and apply any repair it offers.
- Reconnect to Wi‑Fi and test a website or game.
If the diagnostic reports that it could not identify a problem, continue with the radio and reconnection checks. A clean diagnostic result does not prove that the router, ISP, or game service is healthy.

Step 2: verify Wi‑Fi, Airplane mode, and the saved profile
When the Wi‑Fi toggle is missing
Open Device Manager and expand Network adapters. Look for the wireless adapter, enable it if it is disabled, and restart Windows. If the adapter is absent or marked with an error icon, install the manufacturer’s current WLAN driver and restart. Microsoft also recommends checking that WLAN-related services are running when the Wi‑Fi control is unavailable.
When the network is visible but will not connect
Re-enter the password carefully, then remove the stale profile through Settings > Network & internet > Wi‑Fi > Manage known networks > [your network] > Forget. Rejoin from the network panel. This clears an obsolete password or security negotiation without changing other household devices.
When the Ally says it is connected but has no internet
Look at another device on the same network. If phones and computers also fail, restart the modem and router and check the ISP status. If only the Ally fails, continue with gateway, DNS, driver, and reset checks rather than assuming the broadband service is down.
Step 3: restart the modem and router correctly
A reboot clears temporary DHCP, DNS, and radio-state faults. Unplug the modem and router, wait at least about 30 seconds, plug in the modem first, and wait until its normal connection indicators settle. Plug in the router second and give it time to broadcast Wi‑Fi. This procedure briefly disconnects every device, so avoid doing it during another person’s meeting or a console download.
If the Ally reconnects after the reboot but begins failing again, note whether the problem occurs only in one room, after several hours, or when many devices are active. Those patterns point toward coverage, interference, heat, firmware, or congestion rather than a bad saved password.

Step 4: compare 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz
When a router exposes separate network names, join each band in turn from the Ally. A 5 GHz connection can provide higher local throughput at short range, while 2.4 GHz usually reaches farther through walls but may be more congested. The meaningful test is the behavior in the room where you play, not a speed result beside the router.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Works on 5 GHz but not 2.4 GHz: inspect the router’s 2.4 GHz channel and firmware, and check for interference from nearby networks or household devices.
- Works on 2.4 GHz but not 5 GHz: move closer, verify the 5 GHz network is enabled, and update the router firmware and Ally WLAN driver.
- Fails on both bands: continue with driver, gateway, Ethernet, and reset tests; the issue is unlikely to be a single-band coverage problem.
- Only one room is slow: treat it as coverage or interference first. Move the router or handheld temporarily and test again before buying new hardware.
Step 5: update the MediaTek WLAN driver
A December 7, 2025 Windows Central walkthrough identifies the adapter used in the Xbox Ally family as the MediaTek Wi‑Fi 6E MT7922 (RZ616) 160Hz Wireless LAN Card. The walkthrough covers Xbox Ally, Xbox Ally X, ROG Ally, and ROG Ally X and describes obtaining a current driver from Microsoft’s Update Catalog, then applying it through Device Manager. That is a dated individual walkthrough, not a guarantee that every disconnect has the same cause.
- Open Device Manager from the Start menu.
- Expand Network adapters and identify the MediaTek wireless card. If your hardware shows a different adapter, use its displayed name rather than forcing an MT7922 package.
- Record the adapter name and current driver version from Properties > Driver.
- Use Microsoft’s Update Catalog to locate a current WLAN driver appropriate to the adapter and Windows version.
- In Device Manager, right-click the wireless adapter, choose Update driver, select Browse my computer for drivers, and point Windows to the downloaded package or extracted folder.
- Restart the Ally, reconnect to Wi‑Fi, and test the same room and game that exposed the fault.
Do not install a driver for a different wireless chipset merely because its version number is newer. If the update introduces a new failure, return to the adapter’s Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver option when Windows makes that option available, then use the device manufacturer’s support guidance.
Step 6: stop sleep and battery-related drops
Microsoft documents a power-management setting that can disconnect a wireless adapter when Windows enters a power state. To test it, open Device Manager > Network adapters, right-click the Wi‑Fi adapter, choose Properties, and open the Power Management tab. Clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power, select OK, and restart the handheld.
This change can increase power use, so apply it when your symptom is specifically tied to sleep, wake, or battery operation. It is less relevant when the Ally fails immediately after joining the network or when every device in the house loses internet access.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Step 7: use Network reset only for persistent Windows faults
Network reset is useful after a Windows upgrade, a corrupted adapter installation, or settings that ordinary reconnection cannot repair. It is disruptive: Windows removes installed network adapters and reinstalls them with default settings, and saved networks may need to be entered again. VPN software, virtual adapters, static addresses, and other custom network settings may also require reconfiguration.
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings.
- Select Network reset.
- Read the warning, choose Reset now, and confirm.
- Allow Windows to restart.
- Reconnect to Wi‑Fi and re-enter the password.
- Reinstall or reconfigure any VPN, virtual adapter, static IP, or other network component that depended on the previous configuration.
Record custom settings before starting. Do not use Network reset as a routine response to a single game error; it changes the handheld’s entire Windows network configuration.

Test the default gateway
Find the default gateway shown in Windows network details and ping it from a terminal. A stable response to the gateway while websites fail points beyond the local Wi‑Fi link, toward DNS, the modem, or the ISP. Failure to reach the gateway while the Ally claims to be connected points toward the wireless link, adapter, or router.
Use direct Ethernet when possible
Connect the Ally to the modem with a USB‑C Ethernet adapter and an Ethernet cable, then test the same service. If Ethernet works consistently while Wi‑Fi fails, the broadband feed is reaching the handheld and the investigation should focus on router firmware, placement, channel congestion, coverage, and the wireless adapter. If Ethernet also fails, inspect the modem, gateway, ISP, and Windows IP configuration instead.
Compare another device and another network
- If several devices fail on the home router, investigate the router or ISP.
- If only the Ally fails at home but works on a phone hotspot, investigate the home router’s band, security mode, DHCP, or firmware.
- If the Ally fails on both home Wi‑Fi and a hotspot, prioritize the Ally’s driver, adapter, power settings, or Windows installation.
These comparisons are more informative than repeatedly reinstalling a game because they isolate the layer that is actually failing.

When the problem is not Wi‑Fi
Xbox’s Handheld Compatibility program helps identify whether a game is Handheld optimized, Mostly compatible, Unsupported, or Not tested. An Unsupported or Not tested title can fail to launch or connect even while the Ally has a stable internet path. Conversely, a supported game can still fail during a service outage or account check.
Remote play needs an internet connection to the handheld and the console environment. Cloud gaming adds Game Pass, regional, device, and service conditions. Confirm those prerequisites separately. Do not treat an entitlement or compatibility message as proof that the MT7922 driver or router is broken.
Router-side checks before buying replacement hardware
After the restart, band comparison, and Ethernet test, inspect the router’s firmware and placement. Put the router in an open, central position rather than inside a cabinet or behind dense furniture. Reduce competing transmitters where practical and test at the distance where you actually play. If several household devices have weak service in the same area, a Wi‑Fi 6/6E router or mesh system may improve coverage; if only the Ally fails beside the router, new hardware is unlikely to be the first answer.
Router replacement also changes every household device, so treat it as a broad intervention. Keep the existing router’s configuration and restore point available until the new setup has been tested with the Ally, another computer, and the services you use most.
What to record before contacting support
- Ally model: ROG XBOX Ally (2025) RC73YA or ROG XBOX Ally X.
- Windows version and the wireless adapter name shown in Device Manager.
- Whether the failure occurs on 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, both, or a phone hotspot.
- Whether another device works on the same router.
- Whether the problem starts after sleep, on battery, or after a Windows update.
- The exact Windows message, game error, and Xbox compatibility label.
- Whether direct Ethernet reaches the internet.
- Any VPN, static IP, virtual adapter, or custom DNS setting that was active.
This information lets ASUS, Microsoft, an ISP, or a router manufacturer target the correct layer instead of repeating generic password and reboot advice.
Quick Recap
Final decision tree
- No Wi‑Fi control: inspect Device Manager, enable or reinstall the adapter, and restart WLAN services.
- Wi‑Fi control present but connection rejected: forget the profile, re-enter the password, reboot the router, and test the other band.
- Connected without internet: compare another device, inspect the gateway, and try Ethernet.
- Drops after sleep or battery use: update the WLAN driver and disable the adapter’s power-off option.
- Still failing after those checks: record custom settings and perform Network reset.
- Only one game fails: verify Xbox compatibility, online requirements, Game Pass or remote-play entitlement, and service status before further Windows changes.
