Microsoft did not report an overall decline in Xbox or Gaming revenue for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025. Instead, its results showed a widening split: Gaming revenue rose 10% year over year, Xbox content and services revenue increased 13%, and hardware revenue declined.
The quarter ended June 30, 2025, and Microsoft announced the results on July 30, 2025. The figures describe a historical quarter—not the latest Xbox financial update as of 2026.

The headline numbers
Microsoft reports gaming within its More Personal Computing segment, rather than as a separately reported consolidated segment. More Personal Computing revenue reached $13.5 billion in Q4 FY2025, up 9% year over year.

| Category | Q4 FY2025 result | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Gaming revenue | Up 10% year over year | Total gaming revenue increased |
| Xbox content and services | Up 13% reported, or 12% in constant currency | Software, subscriptions, in-game content and related services grew |
| Xbox hardware | Declined | Console hardware remained under pressure |
| More Personal Computing | $13.5 billion, up 9% | The broader Microsoft segment containing gaming |
Microsoft’s earnings release and earnings call therefore do not support the claim that total Xbox revenue declined. The more accurate description is that Xbox hardware weakened while software and services offset that weakness.

“Xbox revenue” is not one disclosed number
“Xbox revenue” is a useful informal label, but it can blur several different businesses. Microsoft discusses Gaming revenue, Xbox content and services, and hardware-related performance separately.
Content and services includes first- and third-party games, in-game purchases, Xbox Game Pass and other subscriptions, Xbox Cloud Gaming, advertising, and other cloud services. It is therefore incorrect to treat the 13% increase in this category as a 13% increase in Game Pass revenue alone.
Microsoft’s reported figures also use different comparison periods. The 10% Gaming increase applies to the quarter; the annual report says full-year FY2025 Gaming revenue increased by $2.0 billion, or 9%.

Hardware was the weak point
Microsoft’s FY2025 annual report says Xbox hardware revenue fell 25% for the full fiscal year, attributing the decline to lower console volume. That is a full-year revenue figure, not a confirmed 25% Q4 decline and not a 25% decline in console units.

Revenue and shipments are not interchangeable. Hardware revenue can be affected by console volume, pricing, product mix, promotions, accessories and currency effects. Microsoft did not provide a complete official quarterly console-shipment table in the cited earnings materials, so the available disclosure does not justify assigning an exact unit decline to Q4 or claiming that every Xbox hardware model performed identically.
The annual report also says full-year Xbox content and services revenue increased 16%. Together, those figures show the scale of the mix shift: console hardware contracted sharply over the year while software and services expanded.
Microsoft’s FY2025 annual report is the appropriate source for the full-year hardware figure and its stated explanation.

A console sale is generally an upfront hardware transaction. The broader gaming business can continue generating revenue from an existing audience through game purchases, downloadable content, subscriptions, advertising and cloud services. Microsoft can also sell games beyond Xbox consoles.

That creates a mix effect:
- Fewer or lower-value console sales can reduce hardware revenue.
- First-party releases can generate software sales and in-game spending.
- Game Pass can produce recurring subscription revenue.
- Third-party games and add-on content can monetize the Xbox ecosystem.
- PC, cloud and competing-console distribution can expand the audience for Microsoft-owned games.
This does not make hardware weakness irrelevant. Consoles remain an important way to acquire and engage players. It means, however, that Microsoft’s financial performance is increasingly less dependent on selling a new Xbox console to each customer.
Game Pass and first-party content powered growth
Microsoft attributed the quarterly content-and-services performance to better-than-expected first-party content and Xbox Game Pass. On the earnings call, the company said annual Game Pass revenue reached nearly $5 billion for the first time.
That figure is annual revenue, not quarterly revenue, subscriber count, profit or average revenue per user. It also cannot be used to calculate Game Pass’s precise share of the 13% quarterly content-and-services increase. Microsoft’s category is broader than the subscription and includes other game and service revenue.

A game can contribute through Xbox console sales, PC sales, subscriptions, downloadable content and sales on other platforms. Microsoft is distributing games beyond Xbox hardware
Microsoft said on its earnings call that it was the top publisher on both Xbox and PlayStation during the quarter, citing releases including Forza Horizon 5 and Oblivion Remastered. That statement is evidence of a broader publishing strategy: Microsoft is trying to monetize its game portfolio across Xbox, PC, cloud and competing platforms.
It does not prove that PlayStation sales caused the quarter’s revenue growth, nor does it show that sales on other platforms fully offset weaker Xbox hardware. Microsoft did not provide that causal or platform-by-platform breakdown in the cited materials.
The strategic direction is clearer than the exact financial contribution. Microsoft’s annual report describes an approach aimed at reaching players across console, PC, mobile and cloud, with first-party studios and Game Pass as important parts of the ecosystem.

Q4 FY2025 points to a transition rather than a simple collapse-or-success verdict:
Best Value
- Hardware dependence is declining. Xbox hardware revenue fell for the full fiscal year, and Microsoft cited lower console volume.
- Recurring services matter more. Game Pass and other content-and-services revenue helped lift the broader business.
- First-party games are strategic assets. They can be monetized through multiple storefronts and devices.
- Distribution is widening. Microsoft is pursuing players on Xbox, PC, cloud and competing consoles.
That does not mean Microsoft has abandoned Xbox consoles. Consoles remain part of the ecosystem, and the available evidence supports diversification—not withdrawal from hardware.
What Microsoft’s results do—and do not—prove
The results establish three points:
- Microsoft reported Gaming revenue up 10% year over year in Q4 FY2025.
- Xbox content and services revenue rose 13% on a reported basis, or 12% in constant currency.
- Xbox hardware was under pressure, with the annual report recording a 25% full-year hardware-revenue decline driven by lower console volume.
They do not establish Microsoft’s global console market share, the exact Q4 change in console units, the precise contribution of Game Pass, or the profitability of each platform. They also do not prove that Microsoft has exited the console business.
For readers evaluating Xbox, the practical implication is that console sales alone are becoming a less complete measure of Microsoft’s gaming health. A Series X or Series S remains a local gaming device, but Microsoft’s commercial model increasingly revolves around access to games and services across a wider ecosystem.
The accurate takeaway
Calling this an overall Xbox revenue decline gets the central fact wrong. Microsoft’s Q4 FY2025 gaming business grew even as Xbox hardware continued to weaken. The important story is the widening gap between a declining console-hardware business and a growing software, subscription and services business.
Microsoft is demonstrating that Xbox can grow financially without growing through console hardware. The trade-off is that the health of the Xbox brand becomes harder to judge from console sales alone—and more dependent on whether Game Pass, first-party games and cross-platform distribution can keep expanding.
