Microsoft is targeting some inactive Xbox Series X|S owners in the United States with an invitation to trade their console at Best Buy. Reports published October 20–23, 2026 say the offer is worth up to $375 for an Xbox Series X or up to $200 for an Xbox Series S, issued as Best Buy eGift Card credit. Those are ceilings, not guaranteed payouts: the exact model, condition and included accessories determine the live quote.
What exactly is Microsoft offering inactive Xbox owners?
The campaign appears in targeted Microsoft emails to some US owners who have not used their Series X or Series S recently. The message says: “Haven’t played on your console in a while? If you’ve moved on to Xbox on PC or another way to play Xbox games”. Microsoft confirmed to Gizmodo, as reported by TweakTown, that the email is genuine.

The reported maximums are $375 for Series X and $200 for Series S. Best Buy pays approved trade-ins as an eGift Card, not cash. The promotion is therefore most useful to someone who already expects to shop at Best Buy; it is not a universal cash valuation for every console.
How much is an Xbox Series X or Series S worth at Best Buy?
Only Best Buy’s live estimator can produce an individual quote. Its trade-in page describes the process as: “Find your device and trade it in for a Best Buy eGift Card.” The public information gives maximum examples rather than a fixed price list.

Reported Series X examples
TweakTown reports that a Series X in good condition with its power cable, controller and stand can qualify for the full $375 example. Poor condition can reduce that example to about $150, and missing accessories can lower it further.

The reported Series S maximum is $200. No universal Series S quote is published, so storage configuration, condition and accessories still need to be entered into the retailer’s flow.

Is the $375 Xbox trade-in value guaranteed?

What can make the quote fall?
A console that is damaged, heavily worn, incomplete or unable to meet the retailer’s working-condition requirements is unlikely to receive the headline amount. The cited reports specifically identify condition and the presence of the controller, cable and stand as material factors.
Why is Microsoft encouraging people to trade in unused consoles?
Microsoft’s June 25, 2026 Xbox announcement provides the policy context. It said console prices would rise by US$100 for 512GB models and US$150 for 1TB models effective August 1, 2026, and that Microsoft was working with retail partners on programs offering previously played consoles at lower prices.
The announcement also said, “Players who are ready to upgrade or no longer use their console will be able to trade it in with participating retail partners.” Collecting functioning used hardware gives Microsoft and retailers inventory that can be resold at lower prices, while giving owners a way to recover some value from equipment they no longer use.

Should you trade in at Best Buy or sell privately?
Best Buy’s route is simpler, but a private sale may produce more money. TweakTown reports recent used Series X sales above $500 on eBay, compared with Best Buy’s reported maximum $375 eGift Card example. That difference is not a guaranteed profit: marketplace fees, shipping, buyer disputes and the time required to create a listing all reduce net proceeds.

Also price the option of keeping the console. If you may return to Xbox games, the value of avoiding a future replacement can exceed a one-time store credit. Microsoft’s announcement points to Xbox Certified Refurbished consoles through Microsoft Stores, but that replacement path is separate from the Best Buy transaction.
