Xbox Nano Controller Firmware Update and Settings Guide

Update the Xbox Nano Controller through the Xbox Accessories app on an Xbox console or a Windows 10/11 PC. On Windows, use a USB data cable or an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows; Microsoft does not support installing firmware over Bluetooth. The same app provides the controller’s Configure screen for button mapping. Charging is separate from updating: the Nano Controller has an internal rechargeable battery and requires a separately sold USB-C cable.

What the Xbox Nano Controller supports

The Xbox Nano Controller is a smaller rechargeable wireless controller designed for portable play and smaller hands. It keeps the standard Xbox button layout while using a compact form factor. The official product information lists compatibility with Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs, Android devices, iPhones and iPads, and compatible smart TVs.

There are two different wireless functions to keep straight:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Xbox Wireless: the documented wireless connection for Xbox consoles.
  • Bluetooth: a supported play connection for Windows 10/11 PCs, tablets, iOS, Android, and compatible smart TVs.

Those connection choices do not all support firmware installation. Bluetooth can be used for supported play, but Microsoft’s documented Windows update process requires a USB connection or an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Before you start: requirements and useful checks

Have the following ready before opening the update screen:

  • An Xbox Nano Controller with enough charge to remain connected during the process.
  • An Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One console, or a Windows 10/11 PC.
  • The Xbox Accessories app. On Xbox it is reached from the controller’s Accessories area; on Windows, install or open the Xbox Accessories app.
  • For Windows, either a USB cable that carries data or an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows. A cable that only supplies power can charge the controller but cannot provide the data connection needed for an update.
  • For charging, a compatible USB-C cable. The controller’s battery is internal and rechargeable, and the product information says the USB-C cable is sold separately; it does not state that one is included in the box.

Close games or other controller utilities while updating. Keep the controller connected, avoid moving the cable, and do not shut down the console or PC until Xbox Accessories reports that the process is complete.

Preparing a reliable update session

Preparation prevents most apparent firmware failures. On a console, sign in with the profile that is using the Nano Controller, turn on the console, and verify that button presses move through the dashboard before opening Accessories. If another controller is connected, identify the Nano by its appearance or by disconnecting the unused controller temporarily so you do not open the wrong Configure page.

On Windows, connect directly to a USB port on the computer rather than through an unpowered hub. If you are using the Xbox Wireless Adapter, plug it in before launching Xbox Accessories and allow Windows to recognize it. A controller can receive power from a cable while still being invisible to the app if that cable lacks data wiring, so detection in the app is the important test—not merely a charging indicator.

Pause sleep or power-saving behavior long enough for the update to finish, and keep the console or PC connected to power. Do not press buttons, remove the adapter, or switch connection methods while the installation is active. If the app asks you to reconnect, follow that prompt rather than repeatedly unplugging the controller.

How to update the Nano Controller on Xbox

The console workflow uses the Xbox Accessories area in Settings. Menu wording and placement can change when Xbox system software is updated, so look for the same functions if a label is slightly different.

  1. Turn on the console and connect the controller. Pair it through Xbox Wireless, then confirm that the console responds to the controller.
  2. Open the guide. Press the Xbox button.
  3. Open the Accessories page. Select Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories.
  4. Select the Nano Controller. If multiple controllers are listed, choose the Nano Controller you intend to update.
  5. Open the firmware screen. Open the … menu below Configure, then choose Firmware version.
  6. Install an offered update. If the screen shows Update, select it and follow the on-screen instructions. Leave the controller connected until the console finishes.

If the screen does not offer an Update button, Xbox Accessories is not offering a firmware update to that controller at that time. That result does not establish a particular firmware version number; it means the app currently considers the controller up to date or has no update available for it.

How to update the Nano Controller on Windows 10 or 11

Windows updates are performed in the Xbox Accessories app. Microsoft’s instructions do not support Bluetooth for firmware installation.

  1. Open Xbox Accessories. Install the app if it is not already on the PC, then launch it.
  2. Use an approved connection. Connect the controller with a USB data cable, or connect it through an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows. Do not rely on Bluetooth for this step.
  3. Confirm detection. Wait for the Nano Controller to appear in Xbox Accessories. Select it only after the app identifies the controller.
  4. Check the firmware notice. If the app displays Update Required, choose the update command.
  5. Keep the connection stable. Do not unplug the cable, remove the wireless adapter, put the PC to sleep, or close Xbox Accessories while the installation runs.
  6. Wait for completion. Use the app’s completion message as the point at which it is safe to disconnect and resume normal play.

Bluetooth remains useful for supported wireless play on a Windows PC, but switching to Bluetooth for the update will not solve an installation problem. Return to USB or the Xbox Wireless Adapter instead.

How to open settings and remap buttons

Button mapping is available through Xbox Accessories on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11. The product information confirms mapping support, while the available documentation does not provide a complete Nano-specific inventory of every remappable button or every profile and accessibility control. Use the controls that the app actually presents for the selected controller.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On Xbox

  1. Open the guide with the Xbox button.
  2. Go to Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories.
  3. Select the Nano Controller.
  4. Choose Configure.
  5. Select the button or control assignment offered by the editor, choose its new function, and save or apply the change when prompted.

On Windows

  1. Open Xbox Accessories.
  2. Connect the Nano Controller and select it when it appears.
  3. Open the controller’s Configure screen.
  4. Use the mapping controls shown for that controller, then apply the changes.

If a particular control, profile option, vibration setting, or accessibility feature is not shown, do not assume that it exists on the Nano Controller. Features associated with other Xbox controller families are not automatically available here. The documented support is button mapping through Xbox Accessories; the available Nano-specific sources do not confirm Elite-only controls, onboard profile storage, trigger locks, or rear paddles.

Charging the Xbox Nano Controller

The Nano Controller uses an internal rechargeable battery. Charging requires a compatible USB-C cable, and the product information says that cable is sold separately. The documentation does not specify that a cable is included, so plan to obtain one rather than assuming the package contains it.

Choose a cable with the following characteristics:

  • USB-C connector fit: the plug must seat securely in the controller’s USB-C port.
  • Data capability: a cable that carries data is required for Windows firmware work. Power-only cables can charge but may not allow Xbox Accessories to detect the controller.
  • Suitable length: select enough reach for the console or PC location without leaving a loose cable where it can be pulled.
  • Build quality: inspect the connector and strain relief, especially if the controller will be charged frequently while being used.
  • Current compatibility: check the seller’s current specification and return policy because cable inventory and descriptions can change.

For a Windows update, use the same cable as a data connection, not merely as a charging lead. If the controller charges but never appears in Xbox Accessories, treat the cable as a possible power-only cable and test another known-good USB data cable.

Troubleshooting firmware updates

The controller is not detected on Windows

  1. Disconnect the controller and reconnect it directly to the PC with a known-good USB data cable.
  2. Wait for Windows to recognize the device, then reopen Xbox Accessories.
  3. Confirm that the Nano Controller appears in the app before looking for firmware options.
  4. If the controller still does not appear, try another USB port and, if available, an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows.

Do not diagnose an update problem until the app can see the controller. A charging-only connection can provide power while failing to provide the data path that Xbox Accessories needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The app says no update is available

On Xbox, the Firmware version screen may show no Update command. In that state, the service is not offering an update to that controller at that time. There is no established Nano-specific firmware number in the documented material, so do not substitute an unverified version number or infer that the controller has a particular release.

The update option is missing over Bluetooth

Switch to a USB data cable or an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows. Microsoft documents Bluetooth as unsupported for firmware updates, even though Bluetooth remains a valid play connection on supported devices.

The controller charges but will not update

Separate charging from data transfer. Replace the current lead with a USB-C cable known to carry data, connect directly to the PC, reopen Xbox Accessories, and check whether the controller is detected. If it appears, retry the update while keeping the cable connected.

The update stops or fails partway through

  • Reconnect using the documented wired method rather than Bluetooth.
  • Use a different known-good USB port and data cable.
  • Restart Xbox Accessories, then select the controller again.
  • On a console, return to Accessories and reopen the Nano Controller’s … menu and Firmware version screen.
  • On Windows, wait for the controller to reappear in the app before trying again.

Avoid disconnecting repeatedly during an active installation. If the app no longer detects the controller after an interruption, reconnect it by USB and reopen the app before taking any further action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Button mapping is missing

  1. Confirm that the Nano Controller itself is selected, rather than another connected controller.
  2. Open the controller’s Configure screen in Xbox Accessories.
  3. Make sure Xbox Accessories and the console or Windows installation are current.
  4. Check whether the control you want to change is presented by the Nano-specific configuration screen.

The official listing confirms mapping support, but the available documentation does not define every UI variation. A missing advanced option may therefore reflect the Nano Controller’s supported feature set rather than a broken installation.

Choosing the right connection for each job

Use case Recommended connection Reason
Firmware update on Xbox Connect the controller to the Xbox console and use Accessories This is the documented console workflow.
Firmware update on Windows USB data cable Provides the wired data path required by Xbox Accessories.
Firmware update alternative on Windows Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows Microsoft lists the adapter as an accepted Windows update connection.
Wireless play on Windows 10/11 Bluetooth or Xbox Wireless Adapter, where supported Bluetooth is supported for play, but not for firmware installation.
Play on Android, iOS, tablets, or compatible smart TVs Bluetooth The product information lists Bluetooth compatibility for these device categories.
Charging USB-C cable The controller has an internal rechargeable battery and needs a separately sold cable.

What the update process can and cannot tell you

Xbox Accessories reports whether it has an update to install; it is not a promise that every Nano Controller will receive a new firmware package at the same time. Availability can depend on the controller’s current state and Microsoft’s service. The cited product and support information does not publish a current Nano-specific firmware version, a release-note list, or a guaranteed update schedule.

Likewise, the absence of a setting in Configure is not evidence that the app is malfunctioning. The confirmed capability is button mapping on supported Xbox consoles and Windows 10/11. Do not transfer specifications from a different controller model unless a model-specific source confirms them for the Nano Controller.

Quick reference checklist

  • Use Xbox Accessories for firmware on Xbox or Windows.
  • On Xbox, open Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories, select the controller, then open … below Configure and choose Firmware version.
  • On Windows, connect with a USB data cable or Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows before opening the update command.
  • Do not attempt a Windows firmware installation over Bluetooth.
  • Use Configure in Xbox Accessories for supported button mapping.
  • Use a separately purchased USB-C cable for charging; choose one that also carries data if it will be used for Windows updates.
  • If no update command appears, the service is not offering one to that controller at that time.

Frequently asked practical questions

Can I update the Nano Controller over Bluetooth? Not on Windows. Microsoft documents USB or an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows firmware installation. Bluetooth remains available for supported play, so change connection methods only for the update.

Where are the controller settings? On Xbox, press the Xbox button and follow Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories. Select the Nano Controller, then choose Configure for mapping or open the … menu and Firmware version for update status. On Windows, open Xbox Accessories and select the controller.

What cable charges the controller? Use a compatible USB-C cable. Because the battery is internal and the cable is sold separately, do not assume one is included. If you also plan to update from Windows, choose a cable that explicitly supports data rather than power only.

Why does the controller not show an update? If the Firmware version page or Xbox Accessories does not show an update command, the service is not offering one to that controller at that time. The absence of a button does not reveal a specific firmware number or release schedule.

Can I use the Nano Controller on my phone or smart TV? The listed compatibility includes Android, iOS, and compatible smart TVs through Bluetooth. Those play connections do not change the Windows firmware requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does button mapping guarantee every advanced controller feature? No. Xbox Accessories confirms button mapping on supported Xbox consoles and Windows 10/11, but the available Nano-specific information does not confirm Elite-style paddles, trigger locks, onboard profiles, or every vibration and accessibility option. Use only controls displayed for the selected Nano Controller.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install firmware over Bluetooth?

No. Microsoft documents USB or an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows firmware installation. Bluetooth is for supported play connections, not Windows firmware updates.

How do I remap Nano Controller buttons?

Open Xbox Accessories, select the Nano Controller, choose Configure, and apply the assignments shown for that controller. On Xbox, reach it through Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What USB-C cable should I buy?

Choose a compatible USB-C cable. For Windows updates, it must carry data, not just power; verify connector fit, length, build quality, seller reliability, and current compatibility.

Why is there no Update button?

Xbox Accessories is not offering an update to that controller at that time. The screen does not establish a particular Nano firmware version.

Is a charging cable included?

The product information says the USB-C cable is sold separately and does not specify that one is included, so plan to obtain a compatible cable.

The Bottom Line

Use Xbox Accessories to update the Nano Controller. On Xbox, open Accessories through Settings; on Windows, use a USB data cable or Xbox Wireless Adapter because Bluetooth firmware installation is unsupported. Configure handles supported button mapping, while charging requires a separately purchased USB-C cable that should also carry data if it will be used for Windows updates.
