The company has not announced a consumer release date, price, retail name, full specifications, or a complete compatibility list. Its one specific hardware timing so far is a plan to begin shipping alpha versions to developers in 2027—not a date for players to buy it.
What is Project Helix?
At the Xbox Developer Summit at GDC on March 11, 2026, Xbox vice president of next generation Jason Ronald announced that Microsoft is developing Project Helix as its next-generation first-party console. Ronald said it is “designed to play your Xbox console and PC games.” That describes Microsoft’s target; the company has not yet explained how PC games will run or which games will be supported.

Xbox’s announcement is the primary source for the project’s status and stated plans: Xbox Wire’s March 11, 2026 announcement. Microsoft’s Game Dev summary from the same day also describes the console’s high-level purpose.
When is the next Xbox coming out?
There is no announced consumer release date. Xbox says it plans to ship alpha versions of Helix hardware to developers beginning in 2027. An alpha is an early development version intended for developers, not a retail console or a promise that the system will launch for consumers that year.

Will Project Helix play PC games?
Xbox says Helix is designed to play both Xbox console and PC games, but has not detailed the PC experience. The announcement does not identify a PC operating environment, supported storefronts, DRM or licensing arrangements, or which individual PC games will work. It is too early to assume that every PC game—or games from any particular store—will be available.

What has Xbox said about the hardware and performance?
Microsoft says Helix is powered by a custom AMD system-on-chip (SoC) and is being co-designed with AMD for next-generation DirectX and FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR). An earlier Xbox announcement of its multi-year AMD partnership described work across a portfolio that includes future first-party consoles and cloud; the custom SoC and Helix-specific software co-design were described in the March 2026 announcement.

Xbox claims an “order of magnitude leap in ray tracing performance and capability” and says intelligence integrated into the graphics and compute pipeline will improve efficiency, scale, and visual ambition. These are Microsoft’s descriptions, not independently verified results: it has not published a Helix benchmark, defined the comparison baseline for the ray-tracing claim, or provided consumer-facing hardware specifications.

Will my current Xbox games and accessories work?
Games
Xbox says it is committed to keeping games from four generations of Xbox playable for years to come. That is a broad commitment, not a published Helix compatibility matrix. The announcement does not list eligible games, explain exceptions, or confirm that every title from four generations will run on Helix. Check for a game-specific compatibility confirmation before treating a particular title as supported.

Could Helix be part of a family of devices?
In a report published October 6, 2026, GamesRadar said Xbox CEO Asha Sharma described Gen-10 as a “family of devices,” with a console first and options for players “on the go.” This is reported leadership framing, not confirmation of a named Helix handheld, its manufacturer, its specifications, or how it would relate to the main console. See GamesRadar’s report.

How much will Project Helix cost?
Microsoft has not announced a price. Regional pricing and availability are also unconfirmed. With no retail model or release schedule established, there is no official price to compare against current consoles.
What has Xbox shared about its wider games ecosystem?
In the March 2026 announcement, Xbox said its Play Anywhere catalog contained more than 1,500 games, 500 development teams had shipped Play Anywhere games, and more than 5,000 developers around the world were building for Xbox. These are Xbox’s figures for its wider ecosystem, not Helix benchmarks or evidence that those games will all be compatible with the new console.
Should you wait for Helix or buy an Xbox now?
There is not enough confirmed Helix information for a direct hardware comparison. If you need a console now, base the decision on the games and accessories you can use today rather than an unannounced price or specification. If you can wait, the details most likely to change that decision are:
