Future Redeemed is a story-focused expansion that reviews especially well for what it adds to Xenoblade Chronicles 3: refined combat, stronger exploration incentives, returning characters and major series revelations. It is most compelling for players already invested in the Xenoblade story. It is paid DLC—not a standalone game—and requires the full version of Xenoblade Chronicles 3.

Is Future Redeemed worth playing?
It is a strong choice if you want more of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 with a new story, combat refinements and reasons to explore. The clearest recommendation is for established fans who will recognize the returning characters and appreciate the connections to earlier games. If you mainly want a self-contained story, or have little interest in series lore, its biggest narrative payoffs may not land as well.
#1 Best Overall
- Best fit: players familiar with the main games who want a lore-rich prequel and more involved exploration.
- Think twice if: you want a standalone entry or prefer to avoid major series revelations.
- Worth knowing: the review’s praise reflects one critic’s assessment of the North American Switch version, not a controlled comparison with other expansions.
What is Future Redeemed, and what do you need to play it?
Future Redeemed is Wave 4 of the paid Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Expansion Pass, released April 25, 2023. Nintendo describes it as an original story scenario set before Xenoblade Chronicles 3 that connects the three main games. Its story follows Matthew and his ally A as they search for Matthew’s missing sister and survivors after the devastation of Swordmarch. Nintendo’s US product listing identifies it as DLC and states: “Full version of game required to use DLC. Sold separately.”
That means buying the base game alone does not include the expansion. You need the full Xenoblade Chronicles 3 game and access to its Expansion Pass. Nintendo Support describes the pass as providing support items, quests, modes, outfits and an additional story scenario. Nintendo Support’s Expansion Pass information covers the DLC relationship.

Nintendo Life’s reviewer estimated 15–18 hours for a main run and roughly twice that for completionist play. Those are the reviewer’s estimates, not independently measured or guaranteed playtimes; how much optional exploration and completion you pursue will affect your total.
Should you play the Xenoblade games in order first?
Nintendo’s official description presents Future Redeemed as a story connecting the three main games, and the review emphasizes that its story relies on series history. Prior familiarity is therefore valuable if you want the full effect of its returning characters and revelations. The available review guidance does not establish one mandatory play order, so treat earlier-game knowledge as a recommendation for context rather than a technical requirement to launch the DLC. If spoilers matter to you, approach it as a story with consequences for the wider series and avoid plot summaries before playing.
