The best Xbox Series X display setup is the highest combination of resolution, refresh rate and HDR features that your particular TV, HDMI input, cable path and game can actually sustain. Start by connecting the console directly to the display, verify the connection in Settings > General > TV & Display Options > 4K TV details, then enable HDR10, VRR and ALLM when the display reports support. Put the TV in Game mode before running Xbox HDR calibration. In each open-world game, compare its image-quality and performance modes: a 4K/60-quality mode can look better, while a 120Hz or performance mode can feel more responsive. No single preset is best for every panel or title.
What should my Xbox Series X display setup be?
Use 4K UHD at 60Hz as the starting point for a 4K television, and select 120Hz only when the display and the game both support and benefit from it. Turn on HDR10, variable refresh rate (VRR) and automatic low-latency mode (ALLM) when the Xbox capability screen confirms them. Calibrate HDR after the television is in its gaming picture mode, not before.

Xbox Series X|S supports output up to 120Hz, plus VRR and ALLM when the connected display supports those features (Xbox, 2020). Dolby Vision gaming is also supported, but the television and the individual game must support it (Xbox, 2021; Dolby current guidance). The settings below are a reliable way to discover what your own HDMI chain can do instead of assuming that a console or television specification applies to every input.
How do I set up the HDMI connection for 4K, HDR and 120Hz?
The physical signal path determines which options Xbox can expose. Connect the Series X directly to the television or monitor whenever possible, then use the input identified by the display manufacturer for enhanced bandwidth, 4K, HDR, VRR or 120Hz.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Choose the correct HDMI input. A television may have one or two high-bandwidth ports and several standard ports. Enable the set’s enhanced, high-bandwidth or HDMI 2.1 mode on the input used by Xbox; the wording varies by brand and firmware.
- Remove intermediaries while diagnosing. Temporarily bypass an AV receiver, switch, capture device or soundbar. Any device in the chain must pass the same resolution, refresh rate, HDR format and VRR signal as the display.
- Inspect the cable. Keep the supplied cable if it passes the mode you want. If the cable is missing, damaged, uncertified or unable to pass 4K/120Hz, replace it with a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. A replacement does not improve picture quality when the existing cable already passes the required signal.
- Power-cycle after changing the path. Turn off the display and console, reconnect the chosen input, then start the display before the Xbox so the console can read the display’s capabilities.
4K at 120Hz requires sufficient bandwidth from the display input, cable and every device between the console and screen. FlatpanelsHD (2020) and Xbox (2020) both identify the complete path—not merely the console—as the limiting factor.
Where can I check what my Xbox and TV actually support?
Use the Xbox compatibility page rather than relying on the television box or a cable label.
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
- Open Profile & system > Settings > General > TV & display options.
- Select 4K TV details.
The screen reports capabilities detected from the current HDMI connection, including available 4K, HDR, 120Hz, VRR and related features. Microsoft’s Xbox Wire guidance gives the same path: “On your Xbox, check your TV’s 4K and HDR capabilities by pressing the Xbox button to open the guide, go to Settings -> General -> TV & Display Options -> 4K TV details.” If an expected feature is missing, fix the input, enhanced HDMI setting, cable or intermediary before changing advanced overrides.
Should I use 4K 60Hz or 120Hz for open-world games?
Choose 4K/60Hz when image detail and a stable 60-frame target matter more than the extra refresh headroom. Choose 120Hz when the display reports it and the game offers a mode designed for higher frame output or lower latency. The refresh setting is a ceiling; it does not force a game to render at 120 frames per second.
| Choice | Best fit | What you gain | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4K UHD, 60Hz | Quality-focused modes and displays without 120Hz support | Maximum resolution target and visual effects available in the game’s quality mode | Whether the title holds its intended frame-rate target and whether HDR tone mapping remains correct |
| 4K UHD, 120Hz | Titles with a 120Hz or performance mode and a compatible display path | More refresh headroom, potentially steadier motion and lower input latency | 4K/120Hz support on the exact HDMI input, certified cable path and the game’s actual output mode |
Open-world engines often trade resolution, lighting, foliage, draw distance or other effects against frame-rate stability. Read the game’s own mode descriptions and switch between them in a representative area of the map. VRR can smooth changing frame times within the display’s supported range, but it cannot create frames that the game does not render.
Which Xbox display options should I enable?
Resolution
Set Display resolution to 4K UHD when 4K TV details confirms that the display and connection support it. If the display cannot sustain 4K at the desired refresh rate, use the highest stable combination reported by the console rather than forcing an unsupported override.

Refresh rate
Set Refresh rate to 120Hz only after 4K TV details confirms 120Hz for the current path. Otherwise leave it at 60Hz. Selecting 120Hz at the console does not convert a 30-frame quality mode into a 120-frame game.
Allow 4K, HDR10 and related features
In Settings > General > TV & display options > Video modes, enable Allow 4K and Allow HDR10 when the display reports support. Keep the option enabled only if the display handles the signal correctly; a washed-out or incorrectly mapped picture is a reason to revisit the TV’s HDR mode and calibration, not to assume that every HDR path is equivalent.
Variable refresh rate
Turn on Allow variable refresh rate when the TV, HDMI input and game path support it. VRR synchronizes the display’s refresh behavior with changing console frame times, reducing tearing and uneven motion. It does not increase a title’s frame-rate ceiling, and some panels can flicker or become unstable with VRR; compare the result with VRR disabled if that happens.
Automatic low-latency mode
Enable Allow auto-low-latency mode when supported. ALLM lets a compatible television switch to its lower-latency Game mode automatically. It is a signaling feature, not a frame-rate or image-quality upgrade, so verify that the television actually changes picture mode when a game starts.
How do I configure the TV for Xbox gaming?
Put the display in Game mode or its equivalent low-latency preset before calibrating or judging a game. Game mode normally reduces processing that adds delay. Disable motion interpolation and aggressive post-processing if your goal is responsive control and faithful game rendering.
- Enable the input’s enhanced or high-bandwidth HDMI mode.
- Allow HDR on that input and select the television’s normal HDR or gaming HDR preset.
- Leave manufacturer-specific tone-mapping controls at their documented defaults until HDR calibration is complete.
- Do not copy menu labels from another brand: names and locations vary by model and firmware, so use the television manual when a capability is absent.
ALLM may select Game mode for you, but setting the mode manually is useful when calibrating, comparing Dolby Vision with HDR10 or troubleshooting a display that does not react to ALLM.

How do I calibrate Xbox HDR correctly?
Run the Xbox HDR calibration workflow only after the TV’s gaming picture mode and desired HDR format are configured. The on-screen pattern is specific to the current display path; a brightness number copied from another television is not a universal target.
- Switch the television to Game mode and confirm that HDR is active.
- On Xbox, open Settings > General > TV & display options > Calibrate HDR for games.
- Adjust each pattern until the on-screen instruction says the symbol is barely visible or invisible, as appropriate. Do not brighten the image simply to make dark details stand out in a room with changing lighting.
- Finish the workflow, launch the game and check its own HDR sliders. If the title displays a logo or clipping pattern, follow that title-specific instruction too.
Repeat the calibration after changing the HDMI input, cable path, TV picture mode or HDR format. Xbox calibration is a setup aid, not a substitute for a model-specific professional calibration. If highlights clip or shadows look lifted after a change, return to the TV’s Game HDR mode and run the workflow again rather than applying another display preset on top.

Should Dolby Vision be enabled for Xbox games?
Dolby Vision is worth comparing, not forcing. Xbox Series X|S supports Dolby Vision gaming, but availability depends on both the television and the title. Dolby’s current guidance associates its best gaming experience with next-generation features such as ALLM and VRR.
Enable Dolby Vision when the display reports support and the game actually switches to it, then compare the same scene with HDR10. Keep HDR10 instead if Dolby Vision produces an undesirable tone map, disables a preferred refresh mode, introduces instability or simply looks less accurate on that display. Dolby Vision is not universally superior: the panel’s brightness, tone mapping and game support determine the result.
Use the 4K TV details screen and the game’s information as the authority. A television can support Dolby Vision for streaming applications while lacking Dolby Vision gaming support on the Xbox input, and a title may use HDR10 even when the console and display can process Dolby Vision.
How should I choose a mode inside each open-world game?
Make the decision per title and, when useful, per activity. The game’s image-quality mode usually prioritizes resolution, lighting, shadows, reflections or draw distance. Its performance mode generally targets steadier motion and lower latency, sometimes at a lower or dynamic resolution.

- Start in the mode recommended by the game’s own description.
- Visit a demanding area—dense city traffic, a large settlement, weather effects or a long view across the map—rather than judging only the opening scene.
- Compare camera pans, traversal and aiming. Look for stable motion, readable distant detail and acceptable HDR highlights.
- If both modes feel close, prefer the one that maintains control responsiveness during combat and driving. If visual detail is the priority and the quality mode remains comfortable, keep it.
- With a 120Hz display, test the title’s high-refresh or performance mode with VRR enabled. Confirm that the mode still uses the HDR format and resolution you want.
There is no universal frame-rate, brightness or input-lag result for every open-world game. Xbox and Dolby documentation establish platform capabilities, not a controlled comparison of every title or panel.
Why does Xbox say my TV does not support 4K HDR or 120Hz?
That message usually reflects the current HDMI path, not a permanent limit of the console or television. Troubleshoot in this order:
- Confirm the port. Move the cable to the TV input specified for enhanced bandwidth, 4K, HDR, VRR or 120Hz.
- Enable the TV’s enhanced mode. Apply the manufacturer’s high-bandwidth or enhanced HDMI setting to that input.
- Bypass equipment. Connect Xbox directly to the TV temporarily. If the feature appears, the receiver, switch, soundbar or capture device is the bottleneck.
- Recheck Xbox. Open Settings > General > TV & display options > 4K TV details and read the detected capabilities again.
- Test the cable. Use the supplied cable or a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable known to pass the desired mode. Replace a cable only when it is damaged, uncertified or unable to carry the signal.
- Update firmware. Install TV and console updates when the manufacturer recommends them, then restart both devices.
- Recalibrate HDR. Changing the port, cable, picture mode or HDR format can change the signal path; run Xbox HDR calibration again afterward.
If 120Hz works with HDR disabled but not with HDR enabled, the display or an intermediary may lack enough bandwidth for the combined mode. If VRR causes flicker, compare the same game with VRR off; panel behavior is not identical across displays.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does VRR change in an open-world game?
VRR changes how the display times refreshes when the game’s frame delivery varies. That can make traversal and camera movement look less uneven and can reduce tearing when a title moves below its target frame rate.
VRR cannot raise a game’s frame rate, remove shader stutter or guarantee a fixed frame time. It also has a display-specific operating range. If the screen flickers near the bottom of that range, or if a particular game behaves poorly, compare VRR on and off and keep the setting that produces the more stable image.
What does ALLM change?
ALLM tells a compatible television to enter its low-latency Game mode when the console is being used for games. It does not change resolution, HDR metadata or the number of frames rendered. If the TV remains in a high-processing cinema preset, verify ALLM support on the exact input and select Game mode manually.

How can I keep settings stable after changing games?
Save a baseline configuration and change one variable at a time. A useful baseline is 4K UHD, 60Hz, HDR10 enabled, VRR enabled when stable, ALLM enabled when supported, and the TV in Game mode. From there, test 120Hz and Dolby Vision only when 4K TV details and the title confirm support.
- Record the HDMI input and television picture preset used for Xbox.
- Note whether the game is using quality, balanced or performance mode.
- After a TV firmware update, revisit 4K TV details because reported capabilities can change.
- Re-run HDR calibration whenever the HDR format or TV picture mode changes.
- Keep a second TV preset available if you use the display for films, since motion processing and tone mapping suitable for movies can add latency or alter game rendering.
What are the most common optimization mistakes?
- Choosing 120Hz by specification alone: the game may render at a lower rate, and the HDMI path may not support 4K/120Hz.
- Replacing a working cable unnecessarily: a cable that already passes the desired signal cannot improve image quality merely because a newer label is available.
- Calibrating before Game mode: switching picture modes afterward changes the image the calibration was meant to control.
- Assuming Dolby Vision is always better: support, tone mapping and refresh behavior vary by title and display.
- Using a receiver or soundbar without checking passthrough: the intermediary can remove 4K, HDR, 120Hz or VRR from the detected capability list.
- Expecting VRR to fix performance: it smooths timing within its range but does not add rendering power.
- Copying another TV’s HDR numbers: panel brightness and tone mapping differ, so use the Xbox patterns and the game’s own instructions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run the Xbox Series X through a soundbar or AV receiver?
Yes, but every device in the chain must pass the same 4K, HDR, refresh-rate and VRR modes. If Xbox does not detect a feature, connect it directly to the TV first; that isolates passthrough limitations without changing console settings.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does Xbox Series S use the same display menus?
The Series S uses the same Xbox TV and display settings path and supports the same 120Hz, VRR and ALLM platform features when the display supports them. Individual games and their available resolution or performance modes can differ from Series X versions.
Why can HDR look different after a television firmware update?
A firmware update can alter the TV’s HDMI capability reporting, Game-mode processing or tone mapping. Recheck 4K TV details and repeat HDR calibration after the update instead of reusing old slider positions.
Why does Dolby Vision look darker or less detailed than HDR10 on my TV?
Dolby Vision and HDR10 can use different tone-mapping paths, and the result depends on the panel and the game’s implementation. Compare the same scene with both formats and keep the one that preserves highlight detail, shadow detail and your preferred refresh mode.
