Xbox Series X vs. Series S for Gears of War: Which Should You Choose?

For Gears of War: Reloaded, both Xbox Series X and Series S support the announced 60 FPS Campaign mode and multiplayer at up to 120 FPS. Choose Series X if native 4K output or playing physical discs matters to you; choose Series S if you want a disc-free console designed for 1440p with 4K upscaling. Those are the clearest differences—not evidence that every Gears game has the same resolution or performance on both consoles.

What changes between Series X and Series S?

Xbox describes Series X as displaying games in native 4K and including a UHD Blu-ray disc player. Series S is disc-free and designed for 1440p, with the ability to upscale to 4K. These are console-level manufacturer descriptions, not a promise that every game renders at those resolutions; the game and display affect the result. Xbox’s console comparison outlines the distinction.

  • Display priority: Series X is the better match if native 4K is your priority. Series S targets 1440p and can upscale to 4K.
  • Physical games and movies: Series X has a UHD Blu-ray drive. Series S is digital-only, and Xbox says it plays digital games only. See Xbox’s backward compatibility overview.

How do the consoles handle Gears of War: Reloaded?

Xbox’s May 5, 2025 announcement lists 4K, a 60 FPS Campaign mode, and multiplayer at up to 120 FPS for Gears of War: Reloaded. The Coalition staff specifically said the 60 FPS and 120 FPS modes are available on Series S as well as Series X. The game is natively optimized for Xbox Series X|S, according to its Xbox Store listing. These are published feature claims, not independent measurements of resolution or frame rate on each console. Xbox Wire’s announcement also notes that advanced display features require compatible hardware; a compatible display is required to use the 120 FPS mode.

So, if your main question is whether Series S can run the announced high-frame-rate multiplayer mode, the answer is yes. The official statement does not establish that the two consoles produce identical image quality, nor does it provide a side-by-side measured resolution comparison.

What about Gears 5?

Xbox lists Gears 5 as optimized for Series X|S, with reduced loading times, Instant Resume, 120 FPS in Versus, and variable refresh rates. Its listing specifically says Series X has 4K HDR Ultra visuals; it does not give an equivalent Series S resolution figure. The 120 FPS claim is for Versus, not a blanket statement about every campaign scene. Check the Xbox Store listing for the title’s published details.

Which Xbox should you choose for Gears?

Choose Series X if…

  • You want the console Xbox describes as displaying games in native 4K.
  • You own physical Xbox games or want a UHD Blu-ray player.
  • You want the clearest fit for the Series X-specific 4K HDR Ultra claim in Gears 5.

Choose Series S if…

  • You are comfortable with a disc-free, digital-only library.
  • You are happy with a console designed for 1440p and 4K upscaling.
  • You want the announced Reloaded Campaign and multiplayer modes that The Coalition said are supported on Series S too.

For older Gears games, avoid assuming that one title’s feature list applies to the whole series. Xbox says most Xbox One games are playable on Series X|S, but backward-compatible enhancements vary by game. The official descriptions cited here do not provide independent, current side-by-side tests of resolution, frame pacing, or visual quality across the Gears titles.
