Neither Xbox Series X nor Series S has a Game Pass library or console subscription tier exclusive to it. Choose based on the console you want to play on: Series X is the stronger fit for native 4K output or UHD Blu-ray discs, while Series S suits an all-digital setup targeting 1440p. Then compare the exact model’s storage and local price. Game Pass plan features and catalog access are separate choices that can vary by plan, region and time.
Does Game Pass work on both consoles?
Yes. Microsoft lists Xbox Series X|S among supported devices. There is no official indication that one console family gets an exclusive Game Pass tier or library advantage; the plan determines which features and games are included. Pick a plan for its current benefits and availability, not on the assumption that Series X or Series S unlocks a different subscription.
Microsoft’s current US plan pages describe Ultimate as including 500+ games and Premium as including 200+ games. Its US overview describes Essential as including 50+ games and PC Game Pass as including 300+ games. Those figures are plan descriptions, not fixed guarantees: Microsoft says catalog counts, titles, features and availability vary by region, plan, platform and time. PC Game Pass is a PC plan, so check the current plan comparison for console eligibility and benefits before subscribing.
What to check in the plan
- Library: Check which games are currently included in your region and on your plan.
- Cloud gaming: Availability and included access depend on the plan and supported devices.
- Online console multiplayer: Microsoft lists it among the benefits of Ultimate and Premium; check the current local plan table for other tiers.
- Day-one releases and partner benefits: Microsoft lists these among Ultimate benefits that are not included in Premium. Confirm the current comparison, since plan names and inclusions can change.
A Game Pass listing is subscription access, not permanent ownership: access can end if the subscription expires or is canceled, or if the game leaves the library.

Series X vs. Series S for a subscription library
The main hardware differences affect how games look, whether you can use discs, and how much built-in storage a model has. Microsoft’s comparison presents multiple variants, so the name alone does not tell you every configuration detail.
| Factor | Xbox Series X | Xbox Series S |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution positioning | Microsoft lists true 4K. | Microsoft lists 1440p; its Series S FAQ says it can upscale to 4K. |
| Physical discs | UHD Blu-ray drive on disc-drive variants; all-digital variants are also available. | Disc-free; games are accessed digitally. |
| Listed internal SSD capacity | Varies by model; check the exact listing. | Microsoft lists 512GB and 1TB SSD choices. |
| Optional expansion | Microsoft lists a Storage Expansion Card option. | Microsoft lists a Storage Expansion Card option. |
| Headline compute figure | 12 teraflops, as displayed on Microsoft’s current comparison page. | 4 teraflops, as displayed on Microsoft’s current comparison page. |
The teraflop figures are manufacturer-listed specifications, not a measure of how much better a subscription is or a guarantee of a particular game’s real-world performance. Microsoft also lists up to 120 FPS capability, Quick Resume, Smart Delivery and support for thousands of games across four generations for the console families. These are platform capabilities; they do not mean every game supports every maximum or feature.

How storage changes the choice
A subscription can make it tempting to keep many games installed, but the console comparison’s capacity figures are headline SSD capacities, not the free space available after system software. The material here does not establish current install sizes for specific games, so it cannot support a reliable promise about how many titles fit on a given model.
Microsoft describes the optional Storage Expansion Card as plugging into the dedicated port and adding game storage at the same performance as the internal custom SSD. It is an option for players who want more installed capacity, not a requirement for every Game Pass subscriber. Check the exact console’s listed internal capacity and the current local cost of an expansion card before comparing total outlay.

Which console should you choose?
Choose Series X if your setup benefits from 4K or discs
- You want the native 4K positioning Microsoft lists for Series X.
- You want to play UHD Blu-ray discs or use physical Xbox games on a disc-drive variant.
- You prefer having the disc option even if most of your subscription games are downloads.
Verify that the specific Series X listing includes a disc drive: Microsoft also lists all-digital Series X variants.
Choose Series S if you are happy with digital games and 1440p
- You get games digitally and do not need a disc drive.
- A 1440p target, with the ability to upscale to 4K, suits your display and expectations.
- The particular 512GB or 1TB model and its local price work for your storage needs.
Series S is not a way to get a separate or larger Game Pass catalog. Its case is a download-first console choice, not a subscription-library advantage.

Compare the exact local listings before buying
Prices and availability vary by retailer and region, and console models differ in disc drive and capacity. Compare the exact Series X and Series S variants sold where you live, including any relevant expansion-card cost. Then compare the current Game Pass plan table for your region. Microsoft’s US library counts should not be treated as universal catalog totals.
