For extra storage that can run most Xbox Series X|S-optimized games, choose a compatible expansion card. A USB external HDD or SSD is better as a larger game library, transfer drive, or place to play supported Xbox One and earlier games—but most optimized games stored on USB must be moved to the console’s internal SSD or an expansion card before you can play them.
Expansion cards and USB drives solve different storage problems
An Xbox Series X|S expansion card connects through the console’s dedicated Storage Expansion port and is designed to add high-speed storage for playing optimized games. Microsoft says the Seagate Storage Expansion Card matches the internal SSD’s performance; Western Digital describes its WD_BLACK C50 as supporting Xbox Velocity Architecture. A USB external drive can hold games and play supported backward-compatible titles, but it is not a direct-play replacement for an expansion card for most optimized Series X|S games.

You can store many games on USB, but storage does not guarantee that a game can launch from that drive. Seagate says Series X|S-optimized games on USB need to be moved back to the internal storage or a Seagate Storage Expansion Card to play. Microsoft likewise points players to the internal SSD or an expansion card for optimized games, while recognizing USB drives for previous-generation titles. The rule is “most,” not “every”: game-specific requirements can vary, so check the individual game’s storage and play requirements when in doubt.

A compatible USB drive is still useful for keeping a library installed and moving games between storage locations. In an Xbox Wire podcast, Xbox hardware leader Jason Ronald said: “If you have an existing USB 3.1 drive, you can unplug it from your Xbox One console, plug it directly into your Series X or your Series S, and you’re up and playing immediately.” That applies to a compatible drive and supported older games; it does not mean every optimized Series X|S game can launch from USB. What to know about the expansion-card options
Seagate Storage Expansion Card
Microsoft’s 2021 announcement named 512 GB and 2 TB Seagate cards. Those are historical product references, not a guarantee that either capacity or SKU is currently available in every region. Microsoft’s product page describes the card as maintaining internal SSD performance. It plugs into the dedicated port, can be selected as an install destination, and supports playing games from the card or moving and copying games between storage locations.
WD_BLACK C50 Expansion Card
Western Digital’s data sheet describes the WD_BLACK C50 as an officially licensed, NVMe-based Xbox Series X|S expansion card that supports Xbox Velocity Architecture and is available in capacities up to 2 TB. The data sheet does not establish current regional stock or which capacities are currently sold.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose between an expansion card and a USB drive
- Choose an expansion card if your priority is adding space to install and play most optimized Series X|S games without moving them to the internal SSD.
- Choose a USB external drive if you want a larger game library, a place to stage or transfer games, or direct play for supported Xbox One and earlier titles. Seagate’s guidance calls for USB 3.0 or newer and at least 128 GB.
- Consider both if you want direct-play capacity for optimized games as well as a separate library or transfer drive. You will still need to manage where optimized games are stored when playing them.
- Compare current total price and capacity before buying. Current prices, stock, and an exhaustive list of available card models are not established by the cited product references. For USB drives, choose HDD versus SSD based on budget and how often you expect to move games; the cited sources do not establish a quantitative performance ranking between them.
What the 2.4 GB/s figure means
Xbox Wire’s 2021 Seagate-card announcement gives 2.4 GB/s as the raw I/O throughput of the console’s custom internal SSD and says that figure is more than 40 times Xbox One’s throughput. This is a platform specification in Microsoft’s product explanation, not an independent benchmark comparing a retail expansion card with a USB HDD or SSD. See the Xbox Wire announcement.
