Xbox Velocity Architecture is not just an SSD. It is a four-part storage and graphics system in Xbox Series X|S: a custom NVMe solid-state drive, dedicated hardware decompression, the DirectStorage I/O API, and Sampler Feedback Streaming (SFS). Together, these components move compressed game data from storage to the GPU with less CPU and memory waste than the Xbox One-era design. Microsoft specifies 2.4 GB/s of raw I/O and up to 4.8 GB/s of compressed throughput under a stated 2:1 compression assumption. Series X|S Optimized games need the internal SSD or a matched Storage Expansion Card to use the complete path; a USB drive is primarily for backward-compatible games and inexpensive bulk storage.

What is Xbox Velocity Architecture?

Xbox Velocity Architecture is the storage foundation Microsoft designed for Xbox Series X and Series S. Rather than treating storage as a fast disk attached to a conventional file system, the design coordinates hardware, software and the graphics pipeline so that games can stream only the data they need, when they need it.

The architecture has four interlocking parts:

  • Custom NVMe SSD: a consistent, sustained storage device rather than a component tuned only for short peak bursts.
  • Hardware-accelerated decompression: dedicated silicon expands compressed game packages without consuming general-purpose CPU cores for the same work.
  • DirectStorage: a low-level I/O layer that lets a game manage queues, priorities, cancellation and completion notifications close to the SSD.
  • Sampler Feedback Streaming: a GPU-driven method that requests only the portions of texture mip levels that are actually sampled.

Andrew Goossen, a Microsoft Technical Fellow on Xbox Series X, summarized the intended role this way: “The CPU is the brain of our new console and the GPU is the heart, but the Xbox Velocity Architecture is the soul.” The phrase is marketing language, but it captures an engineering point: the system is meant to make storage bandwidth useful to rendering, not merely make a game install faster.

How does the architecture move game data?

A Series X|S game typically stores assets in compressed form. When the renderer needs an asset, the game issues read requests through DirectStorage. The SSD supplies the compressed blocks, the dedicated decompression hardware expands them, and the resulting data is placed where the CPU or GPU can consume it. SFS can then refine texture requests so that only the required portions of a mip level are fetched.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Request: the game identifies geometry, textures or other assets needed for the next scene or camera position.
  2. Queue: DirectStorage places reads into one or more queues, with priorities that can favor visible or time-critical assets.
  3. Read: the custom NVMe SSD delivers compressed blocks at a predictable sustained rate.
  4. Decompress: dedicated hardware handles the industry-standard LZ decompressor and BCPack, a texture-oriented algorithm.
  5. Sample: SFS feedback from the GPU can narrow texture requests to the sub-portions that are actually sampled.
  6. Render: the GPU receives usable data while the system avoids unnecessary reads, copies and CPU decompression work.

This pipeline does not guarantee a fixed loading time or frame-rate increase. Results depend on how a title packages assets, schedules requests and uses the available memory. The benefit is a set of predictable tools and bandwidth that developers can design around.

Is Xbox Velocity Architecture just an SSD?

No. The SSD is the high-throughput foundation, but the architecture’s advantage comes from the interaction between storage, decompression, I/O scheduling and texture feedback. An SSD alone can return bytes quickly; it does not decide which bytes a GPU needs, decompress them without CPU work or expose game-controlled priorities.

What the custom SSD contributes

Microsoft specifies the Series X storage design at 2.4 GB/s of raw I/O throughput, with more than 40 times the throughput of Xbox One. Microsoft also lists 4.8 GB/s of compressed I/O throughput when using its stated 2:1 compression assumption. These are architecture figures, not independent measurements of every game or a promise that a title will load 40 times faster.

The emphasis is sustained, consistent performance. Developers can stream large quantities of small assets without designing around the long seek delays and variable behavior associated with a mechanical hard drive.

Why decompression is a separate hardware block

Compression reduces the size of installed assets, but compressed data must be expanded before use. Microsoft’s architecture deep dive says software decompression at the stated workload would require more than four Zen 2 CPU cores under the 2:1 assumption. Dedicated hardware performs LZ decompression and BCPack processing instead, leaving CPU time available for simulation, animation, networking and other game tasks.

What does DirectStorage do on Xbox?

DirectStorage is the low-level I/O layer that exposes the storage pipeline to a game. Older file-I/O paths were designed for fewer, larger requests and add operating-system and CPU overhead when a modern game needs many small reads. DirectStorage is built for high request counts and large content packages.

Its controls include:

  • Multiple queues: a title can separate streaming work by purpose or urgency.
  • Prioritization: visible assets can be favored over data that will be needed later.
  • Cancellation: requests for a camera view that is no longer relevant can be abandoned instead of wasting bandwidth.
  • Notifications: the game receives completion information so it can schedule the next stage of work.
  • Nearby decompression: compressed data can be expanded close to the NVMe device rather than taking a detour through general-purpose software paths.

DirectStorage is an API and scheduling model, not a visual effect. A game must be authored to use it effectively; merely running an older title from fast storage does not retrofit the title with modern streaming logic.

What is Sampler Feedback Streaming?

Sampler Feedback Streaming (SFS) connects texture streaming to what the GPU actually samples. Textures are stored in mipmap levels, which provide progressively lower-resolution versions. Traditional streaming can load an entire mip level even when the scene touches only a small region of it. SFS records which portions were sampled and lets the game request those sub-portions instead of the whole level.

Microsoft’s glossary gives a useful scale example: a 4K texture consumes 8 MB of memory, and the company describes SFS as an effective 2.5x average multiplier on physical memory and SSD performance. “Average” matters here. It is Microsoft’s architectural estimate, not a universal benchmark; a title’s camera behavior, texture layout and sampling pattern determine the actual result.

Because SFS reduces unused texture data, a game can keep more useful detail resident in a fixed memory budget or stream detail with fewer reads. It does not change the source texture’s resolution or act as a new compression format; it changes how much of the existing mip data the system asks for.

Which storage should hold a Series X|S Optimized game?

For the full architecture path, install and play an Xbox Series X|S Optimized game from the console’s internal SSD or a matched Storage Expansion Card. Microsoft says the expansion solution is designed to provide the same speed and performance as internal storage. USB 3.2 external drives remain useful, but mainly for previous-generation backward-compatible games and as a place to keep titles you are not currently playing.

Storage location Series X|S Optimized games Performance role Typical use Cost and capacity information
Internal NVMe SSD Play supported Optimized titles Full Xbox Velocity Architecture path Primary installed-game library Capacity is fixed by the console model; current price is not stated here
Storage Expansion Card Play supported Optimized titles Microsoft describes the custom card as matching internal speed and performance Additional active Series X|S library Available in capacities such as 1TB; current regional price and stock vary
USB 3.2 external hard drive Store Optimized titles; play is not the full architecture path Suitable for backward-compatible titles, not equivalent to internal/expansion streaming Bulk capacity, archived games and previous-generation library Usually the lower-cost capacity option; exact pricing depends on the drive and region

A game can be moved between locations, but the important distinction is where it runs. Keeping an Optimized installation on USB may save internal space, while launching it generally requires moving it back to the internal SSD or matched expansion storage unless that particular title supports an exception.

Do I need a Storage Expansion Card for Series X|S games?

You do not need one to use the architecture if your internal SSD has enough free space. The card becomes useful when you want more active Optimized games without repeatedly moving them to another drive. It is the storage option that preserves the internal-style performance for those titles.

When the card makes sense

  • You regularly play several large current-generation games at the same time.
  • You want to launch Optimized titles directly from additional storage.
  • You prefer a removable, console-shaped expansion solution over managing a USB archive.

When a USB drive is the better value

  • Your library is mostly Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox backward-compatible games.
  • You need inexpensive capacity for games that are not being played now.
  • You are comfortable moving an Optimized title to internal storage before launching it.

Microsoft documents the compatibility and performance distinction, but a current purchase decision also depends on local card pricing, capacity and availability. Those variables change by region and date, so they should be checked with a current retailer before buying.

Why can an external hard drive not deliver the same speed?

A USB hard drive is constrained by both its mechanical media and its connection path. More importantly, it is outside the console’s matched NVMe, decompression and low-level streaming design. The console can read and write to USB storage, but an Optimized title on that drive does not receive the same sustained I/O path Microsoft specifies for internal or expansion storage.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

USB storage is therefore not “broken” or useless; it serves a different job. It is a practical library shelf for older games and a staging area for current-generation installations. The mistake is treating its interface label or advertised peak transfer rate as proof that it is equivalent to the Xbox expansion card.

Does every game use all four parts?

No. The architecture is available to developers, but a title must be built or updated to take advantage of the relevant features. A Series X|S Optimized game can use DirectStorage and hardware decompression while making limited use of SFS, or it can stream assets in a way that does not stress every component equally.

Backward-compatible games were created for earlier hardware and do not automatically gain the full modern asset-streaming pipeline. Their compatibility mode can still benefit from faster storage in general, but that is different from being authored around the four-part architecture.

How does Xbox Velocity Architecture relate to DirectStorage on Windows?

Microsoft also maintains DirectStorage for Windows. That technology lets compatible PC games use high-speed NVMe drives, small reads and hardware-assisted decompression with lower CPU overhead. It is related engineering, not evidence that every Windows game implements the identical Xbox console stack.

On PC, results vary with the NVMe drive, CPU, GPU, Windows version, game engine and whether the title actually supports DirectStorage. The Xbox design benefits from a fixed hardware target; Windows developers must account for a much wider range of systems.

What are the practical limitations and troubleshooting checks?

Velocity Architecture improves the path available to a game, but it cannot solve every loading or streaming problem. Use these checks when a title behaves differently from expectations:

  • Verify the install location: confirm the game is on the internal SSD or matched expansion card if it is labeled Optimized for Series X|S.
  • Check the edition: a backward-compatible version and a native Optimized build can have different storage requirements and behavior.
  • Leave working space: a nearly full drive can make updates and content management difficult even when read throughput remains available.
  • Install the latest game update: streaming improvements are delivered by the title, not only by the console hardware.
  • Do not infer performance from copy speed: transferring a file over USB measures a different path from in-game small-read streaming.
  • Expect workload variation: a game with modest texture streaming may show little visible change, while a large open-world title can make better use of prioritized reads and partial texture requests.

If an Optimized game refuses to launch from USB, that behavior is normally a storage-location requirement rather than a damaged installation. Move or reinstall it to internal or matched expansion storage, then retry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should you remember about the advertised numbers?

The headline figures are useful for understanding design intent, but they need their conditions attached. The 2.4 GB/s value is Microsoft’s raw-I/O specification; 4.8 GB/s assumes a 2:1 compression ratio; the “more than 40 times” comparison is against Xbox One throughput; and the 2.5x SFS figure is an average effective multiplier described by Microsoft. None is a guaranteed loading-time reduction, frame-rate gain or universal benchmark for every game.

The durable takeaway is architectural: Series X|S games can keep assets compressed, move them through dedicated decompression, schedule many small reads and ask for only the texture data the GPU samples. That combination is why the internal SSD and matched expansion card matter more than simply attaching any drive with a high peak-transfer claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep an Optimized game on a USB drive without reinstalling it?

Yes. You can use USB storage as an archive and move the installation back to the internal SSD or a matched expansion card when you want to play it. Moving preserves the installed files; it does not make the USB drive part of the full streaming path.

Does deleting a game remove its saved progress from the SSD?

Game saves are managed separately from the installed game package and are normally synchronized through your Xbox account when cloud saves are enabled. Check the console’s save-data settings before deleting local data, because removing the installation and removing saved data are different actions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will an external USB SSD work like the expansion card?

A USB SSD can copy games faster than a mechanical hard drive, but the connection still does not make it the matched internal-style path for Optimized titles. Use it for storage and backward-compatible games unless a title specifically states otherwise.

Is Sampler Feedback Streaming controlled by a console setting?

No. SFS is a developer-facing rendering and streaming technique implemented in the game. There is no general Xbox dashboard switch that enables it for titles that were not authored to use sampler feedback.
