Xbox’s mobile app can now be used to buy Xbox games and add-on content, according to Microsoft’s current U.S. Xbox mobile page. That updates the older “will soon” announcement: Microsoft first revealed the feature in April 2025 as a beta rollout for Android and iOS, but now advertises in-app purchasing as available.
The feature is a mobile storefront for Xbox and Microsoft Store content—not a way to install most console games as native Android apps. What happens after you buy depends on the title, your account, platform, region, and whether the game supports cloud gaming or Xbox Play Anywhere.

What you can buy in the Xbox Android app
Microsoft says users can browse a catalog of thousands of titles and buy games without leaving the Xbox mobile app. Game-detail pages also support purchases of add-on content such as downloadable content and expansions. See Microsoft’s current overview at Xbox mobile.
The original announcement also mentioned Game Pass membership and Xbox Perks. However, Microsoft does not publish a complete guarantee that every game, bundle, preorder, subscription, or perk will be purchasable in the app in every country. Product listings vary by title, edition, account, platform, region, and time.

- Xbox games: Digital purchases for compatible Xbox products.
- Add-ons and DLC: Content tied to a particular base game, edition, and platform.
- Bundles and preorders: These may appear where Microsoft exposes them for the relevant account and region, but they are not guaranteed for every product.
- Game Pass: The 2025 announcement included membership purchases, but plan availability and pricing should be checked on the live Game Pass page.
- Perks or rewards: Availability depends on the relevant Game Pass plan and region.
This is not a store for native Android versions of Xbox games. Buying an Xbox title does not normally download an Android installation package to your phone.
How to buy a game
- Open the Xbox mobile app on Android.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account linked to the intended Xbox account.
- Search for a game or open its detail page.
- Tap Buy, if the title and account support in-app purchasing.
- Confirm the purchase using the saved payment method or the payment flow shown by Microsoft.
- If it is a compatible console title, use the app’s remote-install option to queue the download on your Xbox.
Microsoft said in its April 16, 2025 announcement that a saved payment method could make the purchase a two-tap process. That was the announced experience, not a guarantee that every current account or payment method will show exactly the same screens.
What happens after you buy?
A purchase creates or manages an Xbox/Microsoft Store entitlement. It does not automatically make the game playable everywhere.

For a compatible Xbox console, remote installation is the practical benefit: you can begin downloading a purchase before returning to the console. Remote installation is not the same as Remote Play, and it does not turn the phone into a console.

Can you play the game on Android after buying it?
Not automatically. Android users have several possible ways to play, but each is separate from the act of purchasing.
Cloud Gaming
Some games can be streamed through Xbox Cloud Gaming at xbox.com/play. Microsoft says cloud gaming requires a supported device, region, plan, and compatible title. A purchased game is not necessarily cloud playable, and cloud availability can change.
Microsoft’s mobile information page lists Android phones and tablets running Android 12 or later for cloud gaming, subject to device, browser, network, and regional requirements. Consult Microsoft’s supported cloud devices information rather than treating Android 12 as a universal guarantee.
Remote Play
Xbox Remote Play streams games installed on your own Xbox console to a supported mobile device. It is different from cloud gaming: the console supplies the game, and the game must be installed and configured for remote access.

PC play
If the purchase includes a PC version, you may be able to play it on a compatible Windows PC. Xbox Play Anywhere can provide both console and Windows access for designated titles, but the label must be present for the specific game.
Is the feature available to every Android user?
Microsoft currently advertises game and add-on purchases in the Xbox mobile app, and describes the capability as recently reinstated. It does not clearly specify a single Android app version, a global launch date, a rollout percentage, or universal country coverage.
In practice, Microsoft’s catalog and feature availability can vary by region, account, platform, Game Pass plan, and time. If one account does not show a Buy button, that alone does not prove the feature has been removed worldwide.
Why did Xbox add mobile purchases?
The feature followed changes to Google Play’s U.S. billing environment after the Epic Games litigation. Google’s current policy page says that, during the stated injunction-related period, developers serving users in the United States are not required to use Google Play Billing and may offer alternative payment methods, subject to applicable programs, policies, fees, and reporting requirements.

That does not justify saying Microsoft pays Google nothing or avoids every fee. The policy is explicitly tied to the United States, and Google says specified alternative-billing programs have service-fee and reporting obligations beginning October 1, 2026. The same arrangement should not be assumed to apply worldwide.
Is this the Xbox Mobile Store?
Microsoft’s confirmed in-app purchasing feature and the broader reported Xbox Mobile Store should be treated as separate projects.
- Xbox app purchasing: A commerce feature inside the existing Xbox app for buying Xbox games and add-ons.
- Xbox Mobile Store: A broader reported storefront involving mobile-game commerce and possible third-party distribution. Its later status was described as uncertain or possibly discontinued in reporting from Windows Central and subsequent coverage.
Microsoft’s current consumer-facing Xbox mobile page confirms in-app game and add-on purchases, but it does not confirm that a separate full Xbox Mobile Store has launched. Buying an Xbox game in the app should not be interpreted as proof that Microsoft has released a general Android game marketplace.

What to do if the Buy button is missing
- Update the Xbox app through Google Play.
- Check the Microsoft account. Make sure it is the account that owns the intended Xbox profile and payment method.
- Check the title and edition. Some products may be unavailable for the selected region, platform, account, or edition.
- Try the Xbox or Microsoft Store website as a fallback. Microsoft’s Xbox storefront is available at microsoft.com/store/b/xboxgames.
- Compare prices before paying. Check the app, web store, console store, and any eligible Game Pass discount. Mobile purchases are not automatically cheaper.
Common problems after purchase
“I expected the game to download to my phone”
The app purchase is generally for an Xbox, PC, or eligible cloud entitlement—not a native Android game. Use Cloud Gaming or Remote Play only if the relevant requirements are met.

“I bought it, but I cannot stream it”
Check whether the title is cloud playable, whether your Game Pass plan includes the required access, and whether your region and device are supported. Open xbox.com/play; do not assume the Xbox app itself is the streaming client.
“Remote installation failed”
Confirm that the console is linked to the same account, online, configured for remote features, and has enough storage. Remote installation queues a download; it does not provide Remote Play.
“My DLC is not appearing”
Check that you own the base game on the same account and that the add-on matches the game’s platform, edition, and region. Some DLC cannot be used across different versions.

You can still buy through the Xbox console Store or the Xbox web storefront. If a game is included in Game Pass, a subscription may provide access or a discount, but it is not equivalent to permanently buying a specific game. Cloud Gaming may be useful for supported titles, while Remote Play is the option for games installed on your own console.
For mobile play, Xbox says compatible Xbox, PlayStation, and other verified controllers may work, while touch controls are available only in selected games. A controller is therefore useful but not mandatory for every supported title.
