Reviews are favorable overall, while also flagging pacing, navigation, field-skill friction, and side-content demands. It works as a standalone game, but some story moments carry more weight if you already know Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
What critics think of Torna
The critical reception is positive, with praise focused on the more concentrated cast, the story of Jin and Lora, and changes to the battle system. The drawbacks are familiar to players who found the main game’s map, compass, field-skill, or pacing systems frustrating.

How the story and setting shape the experience
Torna takes place 500 years before Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and follows events tied to the fall of a kingdom and Jin’s darker path. Nintendo UK’s release announcement says the story centers on Jin and Lora and explores fragments about them and Mythra that the main game only touched on. Director Tetsuya Takahashi described it as “centred around Jin and Lora, and follows the events from 500 years before the main story.” (Nintendo UK)

The focused cast is one of the story’s strengths, but familiarity changes the impact: a newcomer can follow the standalone adventure, while references and certain story beats have added significance for players who know the main game.

What changes in combat and exploration
Combat puts Drivers and Blades on the field
Nintendo’s product description highlights a system in which players can fight as both Blades and their Drivers, switch between front and back lines, and combine weapons and elements. This gives battles a distinct structure from simply controlling a single active party member. Camps add companion conversations alongside cooking and crafting. (Nintendo US Store)
Exploration can interrupt the momentum
Reviews identify navigation and field skills as potential friction points, especially for players who disliked those systems in Xenoblade Chronicles 2. The story also asks for side-content participation, so players seeking a purely linear sequence of main missions may find the pacing uneven. Nintendo Life additionally notes notification overload and exploration demands.
Rank #2
- A new story in the Xenoblade Chronicles series
- The next adventure is on the Nintendo Switch console—set on the backs of colossal, living Titans
- Discover each Titan’s diverse regions, culture, wildlife, equipment, and hidden secrets
- Find, bond with, and command weaponized life forms known as Blades to earn abilities and enhance them
- Uncover the history of Alrest and the mystery of its endless ocean of clouds
How long it takes
Nintendo Life estimates the main story at 18 to 20 hours. That is the reviewer’s estimate for the main story, not a guaranteed total for every play style; spending more time exploring and on side content will extend the adventure.

Can you play Torna without Xenoblade Chronicles 2?
Yes. Torna ~ The Golden Country is available as a standalone game, and its story can be played without owning the main game. The trade-off is narrative context: prior knowledge of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 gives some references and story beats more resonance. If you are choosing an order for story comprehension, playing the main game first supplies that context; if you want to start with the prequel, the standalone release makes that possible.
Which version should you buy?
Nintendo Support distinguishes two routes: buy standalone Torna, or access its story through the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Expansion Pass. The standalone Torna release also includes a download code for Expansion Pass packs 1–4, which can be played only in Xenoblade Chronicles 2. The Expansion Pass includes DLC packs 1–4 and the Torna story. Nintendo says there is no reason to buy both routes. Check regional availability and current pricing before purchasing.
| Route | What it includes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone Torna ~ The Golden Country | The Torna story, plus a download code for Expansion Pass packs 1–4 for use in Xenoblade Chronicles 2. | Players who want Torna as a separate game, including those who do not own the main game. |
| Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Expansion Pass | DLC packs 1–4 and the Torna story. | Owners of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 who want its additional content through the pass. |
