What is Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition?
It is an enhanced edition of Monolith Soft’s 2015 Wii U action RPG. Nintendo says the Switch version has enhanced visuals and additional story elements. Its standalone sci-fi story begins in 2054, after an intergalactic war forces humanity to flee Earth. The player is a survivor on Mira, an alien world where the New Los Angeles colony is trying to establish a home.
As a member of BLADE, you explore Mira and help the colony survive. The world spans five continents, with hostile creatures, quests for NLA residents and party relationships that can yield rare gear. Combat uses a flexible system, while character appearance and class can be customized. BLADE members can also unlock Skells: giant mechs used for both exploration and combat. Nintendo describes the narrative as a standalone sci-fi story; it does not require prior knowledge of another Xenoblade game. Nintendo’s game page has the official product details.

How the Switch 2 upgrade works
If you own the packaged or downloadable Switch edition, Nintendo lists an upgrade-pack route to the Switch 2 Edition. Its corporate release schedule lists the digital Switch 2 Edition for February 19, 2026, and its physical release for April 16, 2026. Those are distinct formats: the upgrade pack is a digital software upgrade, while the physical release is a separate game-card product. Check Nintendo’s current regional terms before buying, since eligibility and pricing can vary.
Nintendo’s schedule also says Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members can access designated upgrade packs at no additional cost. Confirm that this specific upgrade pack is covered for your region and that your membership qualifies before relying on that benefit. Exploration, combat and online play
The central appeal is the combination of open-world exploration and party-based RPG progression. Mira’s five continents provide space to discover new areas, fight creatures and use Skells once unlocked. Back in NLA, resident quests and party relationships add character-focused objectives alongside the main story.
Nintendo lists single-system play as well as online features, including squads, multiplayer-specific missions, Global Nemesis Battles and recruiting other players’ avatars for the main story. Online modes require a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. The membership requirement applies to online features, not the single-system game. Physical copy, digital version and accessories
The Switch Definitive Edition is sold as a Nintendo Switch Game Card as well as a download. If you prefer physical games, check that a listing is for the Switch Game Card edition rather than a digital code or the Switch 2 upgrade. Current price and stock depend on retailer and region.
Nintendo lists the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller as compatible, but it is optional. The launch Exploration Support Pack described by Nintendo Australia included credits, weapons, armor and augments; its eShop offer ended April 6, 2025. Nintendo said those items could also be obtained in-game, so that expired promotion is not a reason to buy the game now.
