xrsound.dll is missing from the game installation, or Windows cannot load the copy it found. If xrsound.dll was not found, repair the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game or X-Ray mod that requested it rather than copying a random DLL into Windows.
Which fix applies to you
Use the symptom that matches your screen:
- “The program can’t start because xrsound.dll is missing”: verify or reinstall the affected game.
- “The code execution cannot proceed because xrSound.dll was not found”: check the game’s
binfolder and then verify its files. - “The specified module could not be found”:
xrSound.dllmay exist, but another dependency beside it is missing. - “The procedure entry point was not found”: the DLL and executable are from incompatible game or mod builds.
- “xrSound.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error”: the file may be corrupted, replaced by the wrong build, or blocked by an incomplete installation.
- The problem began after installing a mod: restore the clean game first, then install the mod version intended for that exact S.T.A.L.K.E.R. title.
- The file disappeared after antivirus detection: check Protection History before reinstalling anything.
- The error names
OpenAL32.dll,xrCore.dll,xrAPI.dll,xrCDB.dll,VCRUNTIME140.dll, orMSVCP140.dllinstead: troubleshoot that named dependency. Installing or replacingxrSound.dllwill not solve a different missing file.
What xrsound.dll is
xrsound.dll is a private 32-bit game component from the X-Ray engine associated with GSC Game World’s original PC games:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The expected location is usually:
<Game folder>binxrSound.dll
A 32-bit Windows installation can run the game, but so can 64-bit Windows through its 32-bit compatibility support. The game still needs its 32-bit X-Ray DLL. Do not put it in C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or another global Windows directory. Application DLLs are normally searched for in the application’s own folders, which keeps the game’s engine files together and avoids version collisions. Microsoft documents this application-folder search behavior in its DLL search order guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- The first console reported version of the survival horror FPS S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series that has sold over 15 million units worldwide
- Chornobili, its tragedy doesn't end
- Genre: Open World FPS
The file’s reported metadata varies between public records, so there is no universal xrsound.dll version that works with every S.T.A.L.K.E.R. title or mod. The executable, engine DLLs, sound libraries, and mod files must come from the same supported build.
Fix 1: Verify the game files first
This is the safest and most likely repair for an original store installation.
Steam installation
- Exit the game and its launcher.
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files. Older Steam clients may call this Local Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish.
- Start the unmodified game before launching any mod.
Steam replaces missing or damaged files from the game’s installed build. A successful repair normally reports that verification completed, and the game should start with xrSound.dll restored beneath its own bin folder.
If verification repeatedly reacquires the same file, disable the mod temporarily and check antivirus Protection History. A mod installer, file permission problem, failing drive, or security product may be removing the file again.
Other launchers, physical copies, and standalone releases
Use the launcher’s Repair, Verify, or Scan and repair command if it has one. For a physical or standalone installation:
- Back up saves and configuration files.
- Uninstall the affected game or mod.
- Reinstall it from the original disc, store account, or official release package.
- Start the clean game once.
- Confirm that the game creates or contains a
binfolder. - Reinstall the mod using its documented procedure.
- Test again before adding extra shaders, overlays, or injectors.
Do not copy xrSound.dll from Shadow of Chernobyl into Call of Pripyat, or from one mod into another, unless the mod author explicitly specifies that exact build. An entry-point error usually means that files from different engine branches have been mixed.
Fix 2: Check the exact game folder
If Windows says the file is missing, inspect the installation rather than searching the entire Windows drive.

- Cutting-edge graphics developed with the latest photogrammetric and scanning technology

- Dynamic day and night and weather cycle gives even more realism to the gameplay experience
- Open the game launcher.
- Use its Browse local files, Open installation folder, or equivalent command.
- Open the
binfolder. - Look for
xrSound.dll. - Check that the launcher executable and the DLL belong to the same installation.
- If the file is absent, return to verification or reinstall the game.
- If it is present but the error remains, continue with the dependency and version checks below.
A file can be present while Windows reports that its module could not be found. That wording can refer to a dependency loaded by xrSound.dll, such as another X-Ray engine DLL or an audio library. Look for the complete error message and the game’s log files.
If the message changes to OpenAL32.dll, xrCore.dll, xrAPI.dll, or xrCDB.dll, repair the same installation rather than downloading only the newly named file. X-Ray engine components are a matched group.
Fix 3: Undo a mod or version mismatch
Mods are a common cause of xrSound.dll load failures because they may replace engine files or expect a particular base game patch.
- Move the mod folder, custom
binfiles, and third-party launchers out of the game directory. - Restore the original game files through the launcher.
- Start the clean game.
- If the clean game works, read the mod’s requirements carefully.
- Confirm the required S.T.A.L.K.E.R. title, patch level, platform release, and installation method.
- Install the mod into the correct game directory.
- Test the mod before adding optional packages.
Do not repair a mod by mixing DLLs from download repositories or from another S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game. Different X-Ray branches can export different functions, even when the filenames look identical.
For a standalone X-Ray game, treat it as its own application. Its binxrSound.dll must match that standalone executable, not the DLL from an installed retail game.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
If the game worked until an antivirus scan or update, the file may have been quarantined.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Find the event associated with the game folder.
- Expand it and inspect the detected path.
- Restore or allow the file only if it came from a legitimate original game installation or trusted official mod package.
- Scan the entire game folder and run a full system scan.
Do not restore a file solely because its name is xrSound.dll. Confirm its source first. If the installation came from an unsafe repack, remove it and reinstall from a legitimate source.

After restoring a trusted file, run the launcher’s file verification again. If antivirus removes it immediately, leave the file quarantined until you have confirmed the installation and detection with the security vendor.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFix 5: Install the correct Microsoft runtime only when named
There is no Microsoft package named xrsound.dll, and Visual C++ Redistributable does not restore this game DLL.
Install or repair Visual C++ only when the error names a Microsoft runtime such as:
VCRUNTIME140.dllMSVCP140.dll- Another Visual C++ runtime or API-set file
For a 32-bit S.T.A.L.K.E.R. executable, the relevant package is generally the x86 Redistributable. Installing only x64 does not satisfy a 32-bit program. Microsoft provides the current package guidance on its Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page.
Do not remove older Visual C++ packages merely because a newer one is installed. Multiple versions can coexist.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components when other programs are also damaged
SFC and DISM normally do not restore third-party game DLLs. Use them when Windows itself is malfunctioning or several unrelated applications report corrupted system files.

- Brand New in box. The product ships with all relevant accessories
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Verify the game files again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker guidance. If SFC reports repairs, test Windows and then the game. If both commands complete without finding a problem, return to repairing the game installation rather than repeating them.
When manually repeating DISM and SFC leaves you unsure which component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can perform a free scan that shows what it identifies; repairs are handled by the full version. Reinstalling the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game remains the definitive fix for a missing game-private DLL.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Fix 7: Update drivers only for an audio or device symptom
A display or audio driver is not the usual cause of a missing xrSound.dll. Driver work is more relevant when the game launches but has no sound, crashes when audio starts, or reports an audio-device problem.
To check the installed drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the active audio device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the game.
For a display-related crash, repeat the process under Display adapters. Prefer the hardware manufacturer’s official driver when Windows cannot find a suitable update. Do not expect a driver update to recreate binxrSound.dll.
Hunting through Device Manager and matching driver packages manually can be slow when several devices are stale. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan showing the drivers it identifies, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and not a substitute for repairing the game files.
Do not register xrsound.dll
Do not run:
regsvr32 xrSound.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM or ActiveX registration routines. xrSound.dll is a private X-Ray engine component, not an identified self-registering Windows component. Registration will generally fail or provide no useful repair.
Recommended Free Tools
The correct fix is to restore the DLL to the game’s expected bin directory beside its matching engine files.
Do not download the DLL from random websites
A standalone DLL download can be:
- The wrong build for your game
- The wrong architecture
- Missing its own dependencies
- Modified or malicious
- Unable to fix the damaged installation that caused the error
Use the original game installer, the launcher’s verification or repair function, or a trusted mod release that explicitly specifies the exact supported build. Never copy a replacement into System32 or SysWOW64.
If the error still remains
After a clean reinstall:
- Start the unmodified game.
- Remove overlays and DLL injectors temporarily.
- Check the game’s logs for the first missing dependency.
- Confirm that the game is installed on a healthy local drive.
- Test with a new Windows user profile.
- Check whether antivirus is removing files after launch.
- Test the exact supported mod version separately.
A persistent entry point not found message usually indicates mixed X-Ray files. A persistent module not found message may indicate a dependency such as an audio library. If only this game fails while other applications work, Windows repair is unlikely to be the primary solution.

FAQ
Is xrsound.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a 32-bit private DLL used by the X-Ray engine and should remain inside the game or mod installation.
Should I install DirectX or Visual C++?
Not for xrsound.dll alone. Install Visual C++ only when the error names a Microsoft runtime. Install an audio component only when the game or mod specifically identifies it.
Can a 64-bit Windows PC use this DLL?
Yes. The operating system can run the 32-bit game, but the game still needs its matching 32-bit X-Ray files.
Where should the file be?
Usually:
<Game folder>binxrSound.dll
The exact folder depends on the game or standalone mod.
Why does the error say a module is missing when the file exists?
One of xrSound.dll’s dependencies may be missing, or the DLL may not match the executable. Check the full error and game log.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Will reinstalling fix an entry-point error?
It will if the installation is restored as a consistent build. If the mod replaces files afterward, the same error can return until the correct mod version is installed.
Should I run System File Checker?
Only when Windows or several unrelated programs also show corruption. SFC does not normally restore a third-party game DLL.
