Xsolla is a B2B commerce and payments platform for game developers and publishers. It can process a player’s purchase, connect payment methods, calculate and apply taxes, monitor fraud, manage refunds and chargebacks, provide customer support workflows, reconcile transactions and pay the developer. Depending on the product and contract, it may also act as the merchant of record for digital content.
That transaction layer is only part of the platform. Xsolla also offers web shops, in-game catalogs, subscriptions, virtual goods, authentication, player inventories, launchers, LiveOps campaigns and affiliate-revenue tracking. The exact role changes by integration, country, device and distribution partner, so seeing Xsolla on a receipt does not by itself tell you who owns the game, sets its prices or controls the player’s account.

In practical terms, that makes it more than a checkout widget and different from a consumer game store: the game studio remains responsible for its game and digital content, while the platform supplies selected commercial infrastructure.

What does Xsolla handle during a purchase?
For a supported transaction, Xsolla can manage much of the lifecycle from payment authorization through settlement. The exact allocation depends on the product and agreement, but the documented responsibilities include the following.

Those functions can remove a substantial operational burden, but they do not make every integration identical.

Is Xsolla the payment processor or the seller?
It can be either a merchant of record for a digital transaction or a payment-service-provider layer, depending on the arrangement. “Merchant of record” generally means the named seller takes responsibility for specified parts of the sale, such as payment acceptance, tax treatment, refunds, disputes and compliance. A payment-service-provider arrangement can leave more of those duties with the developer or publisher.
Do not infer the legal role from the brand name alone. Check the receipt, checkout terms and the game’s privacy or purchase documentation for the seller-of-record details. Xsolla’s own materials describe different products and contractual models, so a studio should confirm who is responsible for each obligation before launch.
What kinds of game products can it sell?
The documented catalog is focused on digital game goods rather than physical merchandise. A developer or publisher can configure products such as:

- In-game purchases sold through a game client or an external web shop.

- The publisher defines products, prices, currencies, regions and eligibility in the catalog.
- The web shop presents those products under the publisher’s branding and sends the player through the configured checkout.

These tools can connect four normally separate records: the person who authenticated, the order that was paid, the entitlement that was granted and the client or launcher that delivers the game. The connection is not automatic merely because a payment succeeded. Developers must map account identifiers, entitlement rules, regional restrictions and revocation behavior, then handle edge cases such as a refund, a duplicate account or a failed delivery.
What growth and partner functions are included?
Beyond checkout and storefronts, Xsolla documents creator collaboration and affiliate systems. Why is Xsolla on a player’s bank statement?
Xsolla may appear because it supplied the checkout, processed the payment or served as the merchant of record for content sold by a particular game or publisher. The game supplies the item, but the payment infrastructure can use Xsolla’s name on the receipt or statement.
A statement entry alone cannot identify the exact seller role, refund policy or support owner. Compare the amount and date with the purchase receipt, then use the support contact and terms shown for that order. If the transaction is not recognized, contact the payment provider and the game or publisher through the official channels listed on the receipt; do not assume that every Xsolla-branded charge is fraudulent or that Xsolla owns the game account.
Does Xsolla handle taxes, fraud, refunds and chargebacks?

Xsolla’s 2026 official homepage and product materials claim coverage in more than 200 countries or regions and more than 1,000 payment methods. Those are headline coverage figures, not a promise that every method works for every game, currency or player.
Availability can change by location, device, platform version, distribution partner, product type and compliance requirement. A launch plan should verify the actual methods offered at checkout in each target market, along with settlement currency, local tax treatment, age or identity requirements and any regional content restrictions.

Xsolla’s current official homepage displays a “5% fee for transaction” headline. That is a website claim, not a universal contractual rate. Actual economics can depend on product, region, payment method, tax treatment, refunds, fraud services, payout terms, negotiated agreement and whether the platform is acting as merchant of record or payment-service provider.
Request a contract-level schedule that separates transaction fees from payment-method costs, currency conversion, chargeback handling, minimums, reserves, payout timing and optional products. A low headline rate does not by itself reveal the total cost of operating a multi-region game shop.

A studio launching in several regions
A team without local payment, tax and dispute operations may value a provider that centralizes those workflows. It still needs to verify the exact countries, methods and compliance obligations for its launch markets.
A live-service publisher
Catalog management, subscriptions, promotions, player inventory and LiveOps can reduce the number of separate systems used for recurring content sales. The publisher should plan entitlement, cancellation and refund behavior before enabling recurring billing.

A creator-led or affiliate campaign
Affiliate-revenue tracking can make multi-party settlement easier to report. Commission, eligibility and geographic terms must come from the current program agreement rather than from a generic assumption.
A player trying to identify a charge
The receipt and checkout terms are the authoritative starting points. They can show whether Xsolla was the seller, the payment provider or the support route for that particular order.
What should a team verify before integrating?
Ask these questions in writing before committing to an implementation:
- Will Xsolla be the merchant of record, a payment-service provider, or a different contracted role?
- Who calculates and remits tax in each target market?

Those answers matter more than a broad feature list. Xsolla states that services can vary by platform version, device, location and distribution partner, so the integration specification is the reliable description of what a particular game will receive.

The publisher must plan duplicate purchases, historical subscriptions, regional price rules and inventory reconciliation rather than treating migration as a simple payment-button swap.
Does using Xsolla remove all payment-compliance work for a studio?
No. Outsourcing specified transaction operations does not remove the studio’s duties under its contract, platform rules or data-protection obligations. The agreement should state which compliance tasks Xsolla performs and which information or controls the studio must provide.
