Yakuza 0 was strongly reviewed by critics: Metacritic’s original-game page displayed an 85 Metascore from 87 critic reviews when accessed on October 8, 2026. Reviews most often praised its crime story, characters, atmosphere, humor, and side activities, while some noted shallow or tedious combat and mixed feelings about certain minigames. The later Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut has a separate review score and should not be folded into the original game’s result.
How critics rated the original Yakuza 0
Metacritic’s page for the original Yakuza 0 displayed an 85 Metascore from 87 critic reviews on October 8, 2026, labeled “Generally Favorable.” Its review breakdown was 77 positive, 10 mixed, and zero negative. These are a dated snapshot of that page’s aggregate, not a permanent total or a score shared by every platform.
Metacritic’s original-game page also shows platform-specific groupings whose scores and review counts differ from the headline sample. One grouping displayed 85 from 94 reviews, another 86 from 26, and another 90 from 9. Since the page’s platform totals do not all match its headline count, cite the platform and count when using one of those figures rather than treating them as interchangeable.
What reviewers liked
Story, characters, and atmosphere
Across the sampled reviews, the crime story and its characters were central strengths. Reviewers also responded to the game’s distinctive atmosphere: it can be dramatic and violent without losing its capacity for absurd humor. On the PS4 critic-review page, GameGrin’s February 21, 2017 excerpt called it “a game that is as fun and intelligent as it is silly and violent.” CD-Action’s March 6, 2017 excerpt contrasted the series’ “bigger heart” with Grand Theft Auto’s larger budget. Those are historical opinions from the outlets, not objective comparisons or measurements. Both excerpts appear on Metacritic’s PS4 critic-review page.

Variety beyond the main story
Critics frequently pointed to the abundance of side activities as a reason the game stays engaging. GamesRadar’s review excerpt on Metacritic praised its strange charm and story, while acknowledging that the minigames could disappoint: “While a bit disappointing on the mini-game front, Yakuza 0 remains as strange and charming as ever, with the best story and combat the series has seen in years.” The excerpt is dated January 19, 2017, and is attributed to GamesRadar on the original-game page.
What some critics found less successful
Combat and pacing through activities
Strong overall reception did not mean every part of the game worked equally well for every reviewer. Trusted Reviews’ excerpt recognized a reservation about combat while emphasizing the pull of the game’s many diversions: “Despite the shallowness of the combat, you’re always being pulled towards something new, and you can’t help but be carried along by it.” This helps explain how a reviewer could find a core mechanic limited yet still respond positively to the overall experience.

Tedium and minigame reservations
The review set was not unanimous. A Metacritic-listed EGM review was notably less positive, arguing that “a mildly interesting setting and story don’t quite make up for the game’s more tedious elements.” Alongside GamesRadar’s minigame caveat, that criticism shows the trade-off behind the praise for variety: the optional diversions are a major attraction for many players, but individual activities or other stretches could feel less compelling to some critics. These excerpts are available on Metacritic’s original-game page.
Does Director’s Cut have the same critic score?
No. Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut is a later, distinct review subject, with its own review pool. Metacritic’s Director’s Cut page displayed an 85 from 43 critic reviews on October 8, 2026, comprising 41 positive and two mixed reviews. Do not combine that count with the original release’s 87 reviews or describe either page’s score as the other edition’s result. SEGA announced the edition for Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on December 8, 2025, and Steam on December 9, 2025. SEGA described additions including new cutscenes, the Red Light Raid online mode, and English and Chinese voiceovers. Its announcement said the mode would be available after a post-launch update on some platforms, so the timing of that feature was not identical everywhere. Is Yakuza 0 a good place to start?
The original game’s critic consensus makes it a well-regarded choice for someone interested in the series, particularly if a character-focused crime story, eccentric humor, and a large range of side activities sound appealing. The cited review excerpts also show the relevant caveat: the combat did not impress every critic, and the volume or quality of minigames is not an unqualified strength. That is a summary of critical reception, not a claim about a particular player’s experience.
