What players objected to in the demo
Complaints focused on two different things: how the demo looked and how its combat felt. In one Reddit thread, a user asked, “What’s going on with the graphics in Kiwami 3?” and described the graphics as “very rough,” calling out the lighting and saying the water looked like “just a blue texture.” Those are that poster’s impressions, not a measured assessment of the game across platforms. Combat drew a separate set of objections. In another discussion, players described some animations as clunky or stiff and criticized bounding throws. Other commenters defended the combat system and welcomed some returning attacks. The thread captures disagreement over feel and animation polish; it does not establish a consensus. One commenter argued it “achieves nothing for any fans wanting to try this before spending retail price,” saying the sample offered too little unfamiliar content. What RGG Studio acknowledged about the graphics
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio said the demo had been made during development and acknowledged feedback about its visual presentation and technical issues. Its January 30, 2026 notice identified the lighting around the Kubochi River in the Downtown Ryukyu stage as bug-affected, noting that planned quality adjustments had not made it into the demo. The studio’s specific example was: “One specific example that has already received significant feedback is the visual presentation and lighting around the Kubochi River area in the Downtown Ryukyu stage.” Read RGG Studio’s demo notice.
RGG said full-game Patch 1.11 would include fixes and quality improvements on release day, while noting that patch distribution timing could differ by platform. That makes the demo’s lighting complaint a documented build issue, rather than evidence on its own of how the patched game performs on every system.
What the demo included—and what it left out
The free demo sampled both parts of the release, rather than offering a complete preview of either game. The official PlayStation listing describes these portions:

A post-launch TechRadar review examined the PS5 version on game version 1.11. The reviewer said they did not encounter the lighting issue other players had raised, but still found some tropical lighting oversaturated and some car and wall textures dated. Those are one reviewer’s observations on PS5, not a controlled comparison of platforms or a technical benchmark. Read the PS5 review.
The same review judged the combat better overall and highlighted the Ryukyu style, while criticizing other choices. That suggests the demo’s rough animations and the combat system’s mechanics should be considered separately: an individual player can dislike animation polish without that alone settling how the full combat system plays. The available review does not establish a platform-wide performance result or a universal verdict.
How widespread was the anger?
The cited Reddit threads demonstrate that some players were sharply critical, while also showing disagreement and praise. They do not measure what share of the fanbase was angry, and no player survey or other statistic establishes the scale of the demo backlash. The figure of 27.7 million standalone game sales worldwide cited by SEGA in 2026 refers to Like a Dragon franchise sales—not sales of Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties or the size of the demo’s audience.
