Usually, yes. An Xbox Series X is 5.94 inches wide, 5.94 inches deep and 11.85 inches tall upright, so many IKEA shelves and media units are physically large enough. The catch is that IKEA’s advertised exterior dimensions are not the opening your console gets: side panels, shelf hardware, doors, inserts, backing boards and cable plugs all consume space. Microsoft’s setup guidance is explicit: “Measure your space – make sure you leave some extra space for airflow.”
BILLY is the most adaptable cited option because its shelves adjust. KALLAX TV units and taller BESTÅ storage are generally promising when left open. Compact KALLAX cubes, 15-inch BESTÅ frames and EKET cubes need an actual clear-opening measurement, not a guess from the product-page dimensions.

Rotating the published dimensions gives an approximate horizontal footprint of 11.85 inches wide × 5.94 inches deep × 5.94 inches high. Xbox’s design guidance describes it as “just under six inches tall” when horizontal and says it can adapt to many living-room shelves and furniture. A shelf that cannot provide roughly 11.85 inches of clear width may therefore work upright but not on its side.
How do I measure an IKEA shelf or cabinet for an Xbox Series X?
Measure the usable opening after the furniture is assembled and configured, not the dimensions printed for the outside of the product. Use a metal tape measure and record the smallest measurement at each point; a decorative lip or narrow rear rail can be the limiting factor.

- Remove temporary obstructions. Take out loose objects and, where the design allows, remove an insert or adjustable shelf you will not use. Do not dismantle structural panels.
- Measure clear width. Measure between the inside faces of the side panels. For upright placement, compare this with the console’s 5.94-inch width; for horizontal placement, compare it with the 11.85-inch width.
- Measure clear height. Measure from the supporting surface to the lowest obstruction above it. Upright placement needs the 11.85-inch body height; horizontal placement needs about 5.94 inches before allowing room around the top and bottom.
- Measure usable depth. Measure from the front edge to the rear obstruction. The console body is 5.94 inches deep, but HDMI and power connectors need a bend radius and must not be crushed against a back panel.
- Check the rear and sides. Note whether the compartment has a solid backing, cable cut-out, door, hinge, insert or shelf lip. These can reduce both the physical opening and the path through which warm air and cables move.
- Account for airflow. Microsoft’s instruction is to leave extra space for airflow. There is no single Microsoft clearance number that applies to every IKEA design, so treat any additional margin you choose as practical planning rather than an official specification.
- Check the finished setup. Measure again with the door, insert or shelf hardware installed and with the cables routed as they will be during use. The final opening, not the empty carcass, determines fit.
A useful no-risk check is to cut a cardboard rectangle matching the console’s orientation and place it in the opening. It can reveal a shelf lip or rear panel that a tape measure taken only at the front misses. The template does not replace an airflow check.
Will an Xbox Series X fit in an IKEA KALLAX?
Often, but the answer depends on whether you mean a bare cube, an insert-equipped cube or the wider TV unit. KALLAX’s published exterior sizes exceed the console in the relevant directions, yet IKEA’s guide does not give one universal clear-opening measurement after panel thickness and accessories.

The cited cube measures 16 3/8 inches wide × 15 3/8 inches deep × 16 3/8 inches high externally. That is larger than the upright console’s body in every dimension, making a fit plausible. Upright placement is usually the straightforward orientation because the cube has more apparent height than the console needs. Horizontal placement needs nearly 11.85 inches of clear width, plus room for cables and ventilation, so verify the side-to-side opening rather than relying on the outside width.

KALLAX TV unit
The cited TV unit measures 57 3/4 inches wide × 15 3/8 inches deep × 23 5/8 inches high and has a listed maximum load of 35 pounds. Its open-media layout is promising for either console orientation because it provides more depth and height than the body requires, subject to the exact shelf and back arrangement.

Do not treat the 35-pound figure as proof that a particular Series X setup is safe: the console’s exact weight and the load rating for your assembled configuration must both be verified before making a load comparison. IKEA says to secure the TV unit to the wall; follow that instruction, especially when a console, television or children’s access could make the unit unstable.

BESTÅ furniture requires attention to stability and anchoring. Follow IKEA’s supplied anchoring and assembly instructions rather than assuming a wide cabinet is safe because it does not wobble when empty. The console should sit on a fully supported surface, not on a movable shelf that is overloaded or incompletely secured.

Xbox’s design article says the console can adapt to many living-room shelves when horizontal, but that statement does not override the physical measurements of your furniture. A low cabinet may solve the height problem while creating a width or airflow problem.
