Yes—You Are Empty: Absolute Edition runs on Steam Deck, but its status is still officially unknown and the evidence base is small. The 2026 Steam remaster is the version to install: it adds modern resolutions, full controller support, an FPS limiter, adjustable field of view and fixes for the original game’s obsolete Windows dependencies. One Steam reviewer reported a smooth Deck experience, while ProtonDB has only one report, marked provisional Platinum with inadequate confidence. The safest approach is to cap the frame rate at 40 or 60 FPS, keep MSAA modest and treat any hitching as an engine-pacing issue rather than a lack of Deck GPU power.
What should you install on Steam Deck?
Install You Are Empty: Absolute Edition (Steam app 4760480), released on 27 October 2026. Do not try to make the 2006 retail disc your Deck version. The original Windows release used StarForce DRM, DirectPlay and old video codecs that are hostile to modern compatibility layers; the remaster removes those requirements and includes the fixes needed for current systems.

It occupies about 5 GB, which is easy to accommodate on 256 GB, 512 GB and 1 TB Deck models. A 64 GB LCD model should leave additional room for shader and compatibility data. The observed Steam price was $7.99 in the United States and ₹415 on the Indian regional store, checked October 2026; prices can vary by country and change after publication.

Is You Are Empty Deck Verified?
No. As of 29 October 2026, Valve had not published a Verified, Playable or Unsupported badge for app 4760480. The compatibility response reported resolved_category: 0 with no resolved items, which means the practical label is Unknown/not yet rated, not Unsupported.

That missing badge does not prove that the game fails. Valve’s published Verified bar includes reaching at least 30 FPS at 1280×800 with the game’s default configuration, but a Verified label does not promise a locked 60 FPS experience. The Absolute Edition is only days old, so its formal review may not yet have entered Valve’s tested catalogue.
What evidence exists that it works?
Direct Deck evidence is positive but limited. Steam reviewer Marvdny, writing after 5.5 hours on 27 October 2026, said the game was smooth and explicitly wrote, “Works on steam deck.” That is a useful confirmation of playability, not a frame-time log or battery test.
ProtonDB’s summary contains one report. Its best and provisional tier is Platinum, while the overall tier remains pending and confidence is inadequate. With only one submission, do not treat that label as a guarantee that every Deck image, Proton build or game update behaves identically.
No published Deck overlay log, 1% low measurement, battery-minute figure or quoted Proton version was available for this app at the time of writing. A 60 FPS target is plausible from the hardware and minimum requirements, but it has not been independently measured on Deck here.
Can the Steam Deck hardware handle it?
Raw hardware is not the concern. The Absolute Edition’s Windows minimum is a dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM, a 1 GB VRAM graphics processor and 5 GB of storage. Valve’s current Steam Deck specifications list a four-core/eight-thread Zen 2 APU, eight RDNA 2 graphics compute units, 16 GB of LPDDR5 memory, a 1280×800 display and a 4–15 W APU power range.

The game uses a 32-bit executable and OpenGL 1.3-era technology. That is an old software workload for the Deck’s GPU. If performance feels uneven, investigate Proton behavior, frame pacing, MSAA and the game’s own engine before lowering resolution or assuming the APU is saturated.

Use Gaming Mode first and leave Proton on its automatic selection. Change the compatibility tool only when the game fails to launch, videos fail, or input behaves incorrectly.
- Install the correct app. In the Steam store, choose You Are Empty: Absolute Edition, app 4760480. The Deck has no native Linux build, so Steam will provide a Proton prefix automatically.
- Launch once from Gaming Mode. Let shaders and the first-run prefix finish. Steam Cloud is enabled for the remaster, which helps preserve saves if you later change Proton versions.
- Force Proton only if necessary. Open the game’s menu, choose Properties → Compatibility, enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then try Proton Experimental. If that fails, try the latest numbered Proton release, followed by GE-Proton. GE-Proton can be installed with ProtonUp-Qt from Discover while in Desktop Mode.
- Keep shader pre-caching enabled. Valve’s system can provide compatible video encodings and shader data for Windows games. The remaster fixes the old AVI cutscene failure, but there is no advantage in disabling a safety net for videos and first-run rendering.
- Choose a controller preset. The game offers three SDL presets for modern and legacy controllers. Select one before starting a level, then verify movement, firing, crouching and sprinting.
- Set an in-game frame cap. Start at 60 FPS on a 60 Hz display or 40 FPS on a 40 Hz setting. Use the game’s own limiter rather than leaving it uncapped.
- Match SteamOS’s cap. Open Quick Access (…) → Performance, enable the performance overlay and set the refresh rate and SteamOS FPS limit to the same value as the in-game cap.
- Keep the native resolution. SteamDB lists a native Deck resolution override for the title. Start at 1280×800; upscaling is unnecessary for this workload unless you are experimenting.
Which graphics settings should you use?
Begin with conservative anti-aliasing and a capped refresh target. The remaster supports up to 8x MSAA and 16x anisotropic filtering, but the developer specifically asked desktop players with erratic dips to try lowering MSAA.
| Setting | Starting value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | 1280×800 native | The Deck’s panel resolution; the game is light enough that FSR is not required. |
| FPS limiter | 40 or 60 FPS | Controls large uncapped swings and improves frame pacing. |
| MSAA | Off or 2x | Lowest-risk starting point while the engine’s frame-time behavior is unsettled. |
| Anisotropic filtering | 8x or 16x | Usually inexpensive on Deck for this class of game and improves texture clarity at angles. |
| Field of view | Moderate | Very high values can reveal the character’s other hand; the effect is more obvious on a 7–7.4-inch screen. |
| HUD and camera options | Personal preference | The remaster adds a toggleable HUD, HUD fade, reduced camera bob and Camera Comfort accessibility options. |
Do not stack mismatched caps, such as 60 FPS in-game and 40 FPS in SteamOS. Matching them avoids the limiter fighting itself. The frame-rate number is only half the story: watch the performance overlay for sudden frame-time spikes.
Should you use 40 Hz, 60 Hz or 90 Hz?
Choose 40 Hz when battery life and consistent pacing matter more than maximum smoothness. Choose 60 Hz when the game can hold that target and you prefer a more responsive camera and HUD. The OLED Deck can run its panel up to 90 Hz, but there is no evidence that this title sustains a useful 90 FPS target, so a 90 Hz display is best paired with a lower in-game cap unless overlay data proves otherwise.

PCGamingWiki notes that some enemy and crouch animations can still look close to 30 FPS even when the renderer is running at 60. A 40 FPS cap can therefore feel coherent while reducing power draw, whereas 60 FPS makes camera movement and interface updates smoother when frame times remain stable.
Why can the frame rate hitch even on powerful hardware?
Launch-week reports point to engine-level pacing problems rather than insufficient GPU power. A Steam discussion described swings from roughly 300 FPS to 80 FPS. Players on systems ranging from an i5-6500 with a GTX 950 to a 7900 XTX-class desktop reported dips or micro-stutter, including slowdowns in the cremation-room section of the first level.
The developer requested affected players’ specifications and suggested lowering MSAA. Another player reported that using the game’s own 120 FPS limiter made the result smoother, although 1% lows still fluctuated. After a later update, a player with a much older mobile system reported a solid 60 FPS without changing settings. These reports show that patches can change behavior, but they do not establish a locked 60 FPS result for every Deck.
- Cap at 40 or 60 FPS before changing resolution.
- Lower MSAA if frame-time spikes continue.
- Check the performance overlay during a hitch to distinguish a GPU limit from a CPU or engine stall.
- Install patches and relaunch after updates; the game was still receiving launch-period fixes in late October 2026.
- Do not chase an uncapped 300 FPS counter. Excess headroom can expose the engine’s uneven pacing instead of improving play.
How good is controller support on Deck?
The Absolute Edition has full controller support and three SDL presets, including XInput and PlayStation-style layouts. The original release had no official controller support, so this is a major handheld improvement. Sprint can be enabled if the default walking speed feels slow; the developers caution that the original campaign was not designed around sprinting.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
There is one important usability caveat: PCGamingWiki records that Xbox button glyphs are not shown during gameplay. Keyboard-and-mouse prompts may still appear, so learn the selected preset or apply a community Steam Input layout if you need on-screen reminders. There is no independent confirmation of gyro, trackpad or haptic quality.

What should you do if it will not launch?
Use this order so that a Proton change is reversible and saves remain protected by Steam Cloud.
- Close the game completely and restart the Deck.
- Verify that the installed app is Absolute Edition, not a sideloaded retail executable.
- Try Proton Experimental from Properties → Compatibility.
- If that fails, test the latest numbered Proton release, then GE-Proton installed through ProtonUp-Qt.
- Keep shader pre-caching enabled and allow the first launch to complete without interrupting video playback.
- After a successful launch, keep that Proton version rather than switching repeatedly.
The retail game’s classic DirectPlay thread-pool error and WMV9/AVI cutscene failure are documented as fixed in Absolute Edition. If those messages appear, it is a strong sign that the wrong executable or an old installation is being used. Other launch-week reports included crashes after the car cutscene, after collecting a movie reel, and while loading a later level; these are moving software issues, so check for a patch before attempting invasive prefix edits.
Does the game fit short handheld sessions?
Yes. HowLongToBeat lists a five-hour main story, with 11 reported runs averaging 5 hours 4 minutes and a median of 4 hours 13 minutes. The all-playstyles average is 5 hours 13 minutes. One Steam reviewer reported finishing in a single 4.5-hour sitting. Steam also lists save-anytime support, adjustable difficulty and Camera Comfort options, all useful for interrupted portable play.
The setting is an alternate-history 1950s Soviet Union in which a psychic “great transformation” turns the population into mutants. The campaign is a compact single-player shooter rather than a long service game, making it easier to complete in commutes or evening sessions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does the remaster differ from the original game?
| Area | Original release | Absolute Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Display | Widescreen HUD and video stretching required community fixes | Modern widescreen resolutions with corrected HUD, menus, weapons and videos |
| Controls | No official controller support | Full controller support with three SDL presets |
| View and timing | FOV required unpacking game files; high-refresh behavior could cause twitching | In-menu FOV, optional FPS limiter, claimed consistent frametimes and fixed camera jitter |
| Dependencies | StarForce, DirectPlay and WMV9-era video requirements | Deprecated APIs and externally installed prerequisites removed |
| Convenience | No modern Steam features | Steam Cloud, achievements, save anytime and adjustable difficulty |
The remaster is therefore not just a higher-resolution wrapper. It removes several failure points that made the 2006 build especially awkward under Proton. For Deck users, buying the old disc to save money is likely to create more work than it saves.

What are the remaining caveats?
- Official status: Valve’s compatibility badge is still unpublished.
- Small sample: only one ProtonDB report and one explicit Deck review were available.
- Frame pacing: desktop users have reported dips and micro-stutter, so a locked 60 FPS should not be promised without an overlay reading.
- Animation cadence: some character and enemy motions may appear nearer 30 FPS despite a higher renderer rate.
- Prompt clarity: Xbox button labels are absent during gameplay.
- Updates: launch-period patches have already changed performance for at least one player, so behavior may shift between builds.
Older critical scores do not describe the Deck version. The 2007 release received poor reviews, including a 34/100 Metacritic aggregate cited by Wikipedia, while the 2026 Steam edition was listed as Very Positive at 92% of 314 reviews in late October. Those figures measure different releases and should not be used as a performance rating.
Bottom line: is You Are Empty worth playing on Steam Deck?
You Are Empty: Absolute Edition is a sensible Deck purchase if you want a short cult FPS and accept that compatibility documentation is still catching up. Install the Steam remaster, start with native 1280×800, cap 40 or 60 FPS using the in-game limiter, keep MSAA at Off or 2x and switch to Proton Experimental or GE-Proton only when the default tool fails. The Deck has ample hardware headroom; the variables to watch are Proton launch behavior and the remaster’s still-imperfect frame pacing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play the 2006 retail version of You Are Empty on Steam Deck?
It is technically a different problem from running the remaster. The disc release uses StarForce and obsolete DirectPlay and WMV9 components, so Proton users are better served by the DRM-free fixes and controller work in Absolute Edition.
Does You Are Empty support Steam Cloud on Deck?
Yes. The Absolute Edition lists Steam Cloud, so saves should follow your account when you move between Deck and another supported Steam installation. Cloud synchronization is not a substitute for keeping one working Proton version after setup.
Is there a native Linux version of You Are Empty: Absolute Edition?
No native Linux depot is listed for the Steam app. SteamOS runs the Windows build through Proton, which is why the compatibility tool selection appears in the game’s Properties menu.
How long does You Are Empty: Absolute Edition take to finish?
HowLongToBeat’s headline estimate is five hours for the main story. Its 11 reported main-story runs average 5 hours 4 minutes, with a median of 4 hours 13 minutes, although individual playthroughs vary.
