The message “Your other Xbox is taking a long time to sync to the cloud” means Xbox Game Saves cannot obtain the lock it needs because another Xbox still appears to be using your account’s save data. That console may be offline and unable to release the lock, or it may still be uploading a large save. In most cases, reconnecting the other Xbox, fully quitting the game there, waiting for its upload to finish, and selecting Try again on the Xbox you want to use resolves the warning without discarding progress.
Use Sync last saved data only after you have confirmed that the other console’s latest progress is already safe. That choice forcibly takes the lock, cancels the other sync, and can erase unsynced progress. Cancel is the offline option: it lets you play with local storage, but the current session will not upload until Xbox network access returns.

What does “Your other Xbox is taking a long time to sync to the cloud” mean?
Xbox Game Saves protects each account’s save data with a lock before synchronization begins. Microsoft describes this warning as a Game Saves lock-contention dialog (CIT-c001): a different Xbox still owns that lock, so the console in front of you cannot safely start its own sync.
There are two common explanations:
- The other Xbox is offline. A disconnected console cannot contact Xbox services to call the operation that releases its lock. It can therefore continue to appear active even after you have moved to another device.
- The other Xbox is still uploading. A large save or a slow connection can keep the upload in progress and delay release of the lock.
This is not automatically evidence of a corrupted save. It is a coordination problem designed to prevent two consoles from writing different versions of the same save at once.

How do I clear the warning without losing progress?
Follow this order. It gives the first console a chance to finish normally before you take any action that can cancel its sync.
- Go to the other Xbox. Reconnect it to Xbox network services. Confirm that it is signed in to the same account and that the game is not suspended or running in the background.
- Fully quit the game on that console. Use the game’s Quit command from the Xbox guide or Home screen rather than merely switching to another app. Closing the title lets its local save finish uploading and release the lock (CIT-c003, CIT-c004).
- Give the upload time to complete. If you have just switched devices, Bethesda advises Fallout Shelter players that availability can take as long as five minutes after the game is closed on the first device. Treat that as a title-specific operating estimate, not a guarantee for every Xbox game.
- Return to the Xbox you want to use. Select Try again. This retries lock acquisition without intentionally cancelling the other session (CIT-c002).
- Check the result before playing. If the game presents a save conflict, read both timestamps and choose the copy containing the progress you intend to keep.
If the other console is in another location, ask its user to connect it and quit the game before you retry. Avoid repeatedly selecting the forceful option while you are still unsure which device has the newest progress.

Which button should I choose: Try again, Sync last saved data, or Cancel?
The three choices have different data-safety consequences. Choose based on whether preserving the other console matters more than starting immediately on the current one.
| Choice | Effect on the other Xbox | Effect on the Xbox in front of you | Cloud and offline behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Try again | Leaves the other session intact and retries the lock request. | Starts only after the lock becomes available. | Normal cloud synchronization can continue once the lock is acquired. |
| Sync last saved data | Forcefully takes the lock and cancels the other sync; unsynced progress from that session can be lost. | Prioritizes this Xbox and lets it proceed with the last saved cloud data. | Use only when the other console’s latest progress is already safe elsewhere. |
| Cancel | Does not take the lock or interrupt the other console. | Launches the game in offline mode with local storage. | The current session does not upload while offline; it remains local until connectivity and synchronization are restored. |
Try again is the safest default. Sync last saved data is a recovery override, not a faster version of Try again. Cancel is appropriate when you deliberately want to play offline and accept that this session is not being backed up to the cloud yet.
When is Sync last saved data safe to use?
Use it only after establishing that the other Xbox has no unique progress you need. Good evidence includes the other player confirming that the game was closed after its latest save, a completed upload, or a session whose progress was already synchronized before the console went offline.

The button does not merge two saves. It takes the lock for the current Xbox and cancels the other synchronization attempt. If the other console had finished a level, earned items, or changed settings locally but had not uploaded them, those changes may disappear when the cloud copy is used.

When you cannot inspect the other console and cannot verify its upload, wait and choose Try again instead. If the warning persists, investigate connectivity and service availability before accepting the data-loss risk.
How does Xbox decide which save to upload or download?
Normal synchronization follows a sequence rather than blindly replacing one file with another:
- Xbox checks whether the console can reach Xbox network services.
- Game Saves acquires the account’s save-data lock.
- Xbox compares the local-save and cloud-save timestamps.
- If only the local copy changed, Xbox uploads it.
- If only the cloud copy changed, Xbox downloads it.
- If both copies changed, Xbox asks which one you want to use.
Microsoft documents periodic synchronization attempts every 30 minutes of gameplay for the described Game Saves APIs (CIT-c006). That periodic behavior does not eliminate the lock requirement; changing devices while a title is open can still leave the first session processing its save.
Without Xbox network access, a title can continue saving locally, but the current session does not synchronize to the cloud (CIT-c003). Playing offline is therefore useful for access, not for creating a cloud backup.

What should I choose when Xbox asks “Which one do you want to use?”
At a conflict prompt, Xbox labels the two candidates This console and The Xbox network (cloud data). Select according to the progress you want to keep, not according to a fixed habit.
- This console: uploads the local copy and overwrites the cloud copy. Choose it when this Xbox contains the newest completed progress and the cloud version is older.
- The Xbox network (cloud data): downloads the cloud copy and overwrites local storage. Choose it when the cloud version is the one you know is current or when the local session is unwanted.
Compare the in-game progress and timestamps if they are shown. Selecting the wrong side can replace the version you intended to preserve.
What if the other Xbox is unavailable or stays offline?
If you cannot reach the other console, first decide whether its local progress could be newer than the cloud copy. If the answer is yes or you are unsure, do not use Sync last saved data yet. Wait for the console to reconnect, or have its user connect it later and quit the game cleanly.
If you have independently confirmed that its latest progress is already synchronized, Sync last saved data can clear the stale lock and let the current Xbox proceed. The override still cancels the other sync, so confirmation should refer to the actual latest session, not merely an older backup.

What should I check if the message keeps returning?
Verify the other console’s connection
Reconnect the console that was used first and make sure Xbox network services are available to it. A console that lost connectivity at the end of a session may retain the lock because it could not perform the release operation.
Quit the title instead of leaving it suspended
Return to Home and use the game’s full Quit action. Suspending or switching games may leave the title processing its save, especially after a large amount of progress.
Retry after a measured wait
For Fallout Shelter, Bethesda’s support guidance says that saves may take up to five minutes to become available after closing the game on the first device, then recommends selecting Try Again. Other titles may take a different amount of time, so this is a practical waiting example rather than an Xbox-wide service-level promise.
Check Xbox service status
A related error, “We couldn’t get your latest saved data,” can appear when Xbox social and gaming services are limited. Microsoft recommends checking the Xbox status page if that condition persists. A status-page incident can prevent a healthy console from completing synchronization, so wait for service restoration before forcing a lock.
Consider platform software
Xbox Wire documented cloud-save fixes for this type of message in Preview Alpha updates in April and May 2019. That history shows that platform software defects have been a possible contributor, although it does not establish that a current occurrence is caused by an update. Keep the console’s system software current and note whether the problem began immediately after a system or game update.

Can a wired Ethernet connection fix the problem?
A Cat6 Ethernet cable can be a sensible optional accessory when unreliable Wi-Fi is preventing the other Xbox from reaching network services or completing a large upload. A wired connection may improve consistency, but it does not release a lock by itself.
Ethernet cannot repair corrupted save data, cancel a session that is still legitimately uploading, or decide which conflicting copy is correct. Use it as a connectivity measure, then still quit the game and select Try again.

What is the safest decision in common situations?
- Both consoles are in your home: connect the first console, quit the game there, wait for completion, and select Try again on the second.
- The first console is online but uploading a large save: leave it connected and closed until the upload finishes; avoid forcing the lock.
- The first console is offline and contains important new progress: reconnect it before doing anything else.
- The first console is unavailable, and you verified its progress is backed up: use Sync last saved data, accepting that the other sync will be cancelled.
- You intentionally want to play without network access: choose Cancel and remember that this session will not upload while offline.
The warning is usually resolved by allowing the original session to release its lock. Forceful synchronization is reserved for cases where the other session’s data has already been secured.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does turning off the other Xbox immediately release the cloud-save lock?
Not necessarily. If the console is offline when it is shut down, it may not be able to call the service operation that releases the lock. Reconnecting it and fully quitting the game gives Xbox a chance to complete the release cleanly.
Will I lose achievements if I choose Sync last saved data?
The documented risk concerns unsynced game-save progress, not a blanket removal of account achievements. Because games can record progress and achievements differently, let the original console synchronize before using the override whenever possible.
Can I keep playing while Try again is waiting?
The title cannot complete its normal cloud-sync start until it obtains the lock. You can either wait for the retry to succeed or choose Cancel to launch offline, understanding that the offline session will not upload immediately.
