It gives her a way to fight like Link, but it does not replace her main tool: the Tri Rod, which creates echoes of objects and enemies to solve puzzles and shape encounters.
How Zelda’s swordfighter form works
Zelda gains the form after finding a mysterious sword. In it, she can use direct sword attacks to strike enemies and cut through barriers. The form is temporary: its energy runs out, and Nintendo says Zelda must replenish it in the Still World.

Nintendo’s trailer announcement, published August 30, 2024, presents the sword as one part of a broader look at the game’s strange rifts and the Still World. The game was announced for release on September 26, 2024. Nintendo’s trailer announcement describes the form and its energy limit.
How swordfighter form differs from echoes
The swordfighter form and the Tri Rod serve different purposes. Swordfighter form is a temporary option for direct combat and cutting barriers; echoes let Zelda adapt the environment, solve puzzles, traverse obstacles and call monsters to fight alongside her.

That division keeps the game’s central idea—solving problems with echoes—while giving Zelda a direct way to handle situations that call for a sword. The official Nintendo game page describes the Tri Rod and the swordfighter form.
Why Nintendo added a swordfighter form
Producer Eiji Aonuma said the team wanted Zelda to imitate Link’s abilities through echoes while retaining sword-and-shield gameplay. “So, we thought it would make sense if Zelda imitated Link’s abilities using echoes, and that’s how the swordfighter form came about.” Aonuma explains the design decision in Nintendo’s Ask the Developer interview.

What the trailer’s reveal means for play
The swordfighter form is best understood as a temporary change of approach, not Zelda’s default fighting style. Echoes provide the flexible toolkit for arranging a solution—whether that means using objects to get around or letting an enemy echo join a fight—while the sword offers a more immediate answer to foes and barriers. Nintendo UK frames that mix as “Brains and brawn” on its regional game page.
