Zelda: Ocarina of Time Fire Temple Key and Door Locations

The standard Fire Temple route contains eight small keys. Collect them in this order: the first freed Goron, the bombable wall in the large bridge-and-lava room, the opposite Goron cell in that room, two cells around the rolling-boulder room, a cracked-floor passage and switch-opened cell on the upper boulder-room level, and a final cell reached after obtaining the Megaton Hammer. The Big Key is separate: it is behind a rusted switch after the second Flare Dancer and opens Volvagia’s boss door.

This guide follows the standard dungeon layout, not Master Quest. Room landmarks are used instead of relying on a particular map orientation, so you can identify the next door even after backtracking.

Fire Temple keys and doors at a glance

Small keys are consumed by ordinary locked doors. The Big Key (also called the Boss Key) is reserved for the boss room. The table shows the practical progression from the entrance to Volvagia.

Key Where to find it What to do next
1 First Goron cell beside Darunia’s opening area Open the locked door straight ahead in the entrance room
2 Bombable wall in the large bridge-and-lava room Continue through the next locked-door route
3 Goron cell on the far side of that bridge-and-moving-platform room Use the following locked door
4 Goron cell around the perimeter of the rolling-boulder room Keep circling the room
5 Second Goron cell in an opposite niche of the rolling-boulder room Open the locked door to the narrow bridge and map section
6 Goron below the cracked floor in the upper boulder-room area Return to the upper level
7 Goron cell reached after activating the switch across the upper area Spend a key on the lava/fire-section door
8 Goron cell reached after the Megaton Hammer sequence Open the locked door behind the hammered totem near the entrance-side lower room
Big Key Chest behind a rusted switch after the second Flare Dancer Open the boss door to Volvagia in the entrance room

The map chest and Compass chest are useful checkpoints, but neither is one of the eight small keys.

How the Fire Temple key system works

A small key opens one ordinary locked door and disappears from your inventory when used. The official game manual states the rule plainly: “Use small keys to open locked doors.” The boss-room door follows a different rule: “You need this key to open the door to the boss’s room.” In practice, that second instruction refers to the Big Key, so do not spend a small key expecting it to open Volvagia’s door.

If a locked door is blocking the route, check whether you have already freed the nearby Goron cells. The dungeon places several keys in cells that are easy to overlook, and two pairs are deliberately grouped in the same large room.

Step-by-step route to every small key

Key 1: the first freed Goron

  1. Enter the Fire Temple and climb the entrance stairs.
  2. Go left to reach Darunia’s area and jump across the platforms.
  3. Step on the floor switch to open the Goron cell.
  4. Speak to the Goron and open the chest for the first small key.
  5. Return to the entrance room. Use the key on the locked door straight ahead, rather than trying to force a side route.

This first key establishes the dungeon’s pattern: a switch or room puzzle opens a cell, and the freed Goron’s chest supplies the key needed for the next locked door.

Key 2: bomb the wall in the bridge-and-lava room

The first locked door leads to a large room dominated by a bridge, lava and moving platforms. Cross only partway over the bridge, then jump to the platforms on the right side. Look for a suspicious wall rather than another cell door. Place a bomb against it to reveal the passage, then step on the switch inside. The newly opened cell or access path leads to a chest containing key 2.

Do not use a key at a random locked door before searching this area. The bombable wall is the intended solution, and missing it can make the room appear to have no progress route.

Key 3: the opposite Goron cell in the same room

Continue across the bridge-and-moving-platform room to its far side. A second Goron is confined there. Free him, take the small key from the chest, and use it on the next locked door along the route. Because keys 2 and 3 are both tied to this room, finish both sides before leaving; otherwise you will have to return through the moving platforms later.

Keys 4 and 5: circle the rolling-boulder room

After the fire-column and fence section, you enter a room where boulders roll continuously. The safe way to search it is to walk the perimeter and inspect every cell alcove.

Key 4 at the outer switch

One Goron cell is near the room’s outer switch. Reach the cell, free the Goron and open the chest for key 4. The rolling boulders make standing still dangerous, so keep moving along the edge and use the room’s boundaries to avoid being struck.

Key 5 in the opposite niche

Continue around the room to the opposite niche. A second Goron cell contains another chest key. Once both keys are in your inventory, leave the boulder room through the locked door leading toward the narrow bridge and map section. If you find only one key, you have not completed the perimeter search.

Map checkpoint and the upper boulder-room keys

The map chest is not a key

In the narrow bridge room, look above the door and shoot the eye switch. The chest that becomes available contains the Dungeon Map. Collect it if you need a floor-plan reference, but do not count it as another small key. The map is a navigation aid and does not change the eight-key total.

Key 6 below the cracked floor

Follow the locked-door route from the lava and fire section until you can reach the upper level of the boulder-room area. Search for a cracked section of floor and bomb it. The opening drops you to a lower passage with a Goron cell. Free the Goron and take key 6 from the chest, then return to the upper level.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The cracked floor is easy to confuse with ordinary flooring. If the upper room seems to contain no new cell, inspect the floor rather than circling the walls again.

Key 7 across the upper area

Back on the upper level, activate the switch that opens the route across the room. Cross the platforms while the route is available and reach the opposite Goron cell. Free him and take key 7. This is the second key associated with the upper boulder-room paths; it is not in the lower cell you used for key 6.

From the fire maze to the Megaton Hammer

Use one of the keys from the upper section on the locked door leading into the lava and fire area. The next sequence has several optional and required turns.

Crossing the fire maze

Work through the fire maze and use the side door if you want the Compass. Like the map chest, the Compass is optional navigation equipment rather than a key. Continue until you can step on the floor switch that suppresses the flame wall. Then bomb the fake door and proceed through the real door.

The fake door and flame-wall switch are separate checks. Bombing the wrong entrance without first suppressing the flames can leave the route blocked, so activate the floor switch before attempting the final passage.

Obtaining the Megaton Hammer

  1. Defeat the first Flare Dancer in this section.
  2. Climb the fences that become accessible after the fight.
  3. Activate the crystal switch.
  4. Sprint up the timed stairs before they retract.
  5. Open the chest at the top to obtain the Megaton Hammer.

The Hammer is a progression item, not a small key. Its importance is that it opens the dungeon’s final key route and the mechanism that exposes the Big Key.

Key 8: the post-Hammer Goron cell

After taking the Megaton Hammer, follow the hammer-specific route back toward the entrance-side lower rooms.

  1. Hammer the face block or totem that blocks the route.
  2. Move the Song of Time block when it occupies the required passage.
  3. Activate the rusted switch with the Hammer.
  4. Free the Goron revealed by the switch and open the chest for key 8.
  5. Use this last small key on the locked door behind the hammered totem near the entrance-side lower room.

This key cannot be collected earlier. If every earlier cell has been emptied and one locked door remains near the entrance-side lower route, the Megaton Hammer sequence is the missing step.

Finding the Big Key and opening Volvagia’s door

Big Key chest

Continue through the entrance-side lower route and defeat the second Flare Dancer. After the fight, hammer the rusted switch. The resulting chest contains the Big Key, also called the Boss Key. It is not counted among the eight small keys and should be kept for the boss door.

Returning to the boss room

  1. Return to the entrance room.
  2. Go up the stairs and turn left.
  3. Cross the central platform.
  4. Use the Big Key on the boss door to enter Volvagia’s room.

If the boss door will not open, check that you collected the chest after the second Flare Dancer. A normal small key cannot substitute for the Big Key.

Common route problems and fixes

“I opened the first door but cannot find the next key.”

Search the bridge-and-lava room’s right-side platforms for the suspicious wall and bomb it. The second key is not in a visible cell at the room entrance.

“I have one key from the rolling-boulder room, but the next door still needs another.”

Walk the entire perimeter. One Goron cell is near the outer switch and the other is in the opposite niche. Both keys are required before the locked door to the narrow bridge and map section.

“The map chest gave me no key.”

That is expected. Shoot the eye switch above the narrow bridge-room door to obtain the Dungeon Map; it is a checkpoint, not a small-key location.

“The upper boulder room has no Goron.”

Bomb the cracked floor to reach key 6, return to the upper level, activate the switch and cross the platforms for key 7. The two cells use different approaches.

“I have the Hammer but still cannot reach the final key.”

Hammer the face block or totem, move the Song of Time block if necessary, and strike the rusted switch. That switch opens the route to the final Goron cell and key 8.

“The boss door rejects my key.”

The boss door requires the Big Key. Defeat the second Flare Dancer and hammer the rusted switch to reveal its chest, then return to the entrance room and take the stairs-left route to Volvagia.
