Reports said the developers planned to rely less on the grid-based mode for story presentation, shift toward stage-based storytelling, and redesign some commissions and story flows after players said TV sections took too long, interrupted combat, and appeared too often early in the game.
What is TV Mode in Zenless Zone Zero?
TV Mode is the game’s grid-like exploration and presentation mechanic, also called Monitor Array in coverage. Players move through a screen of connected monitors and interact with its layout rather than proceeding directly through a conventional action stage. The 2024 discussion focused on how often the mechanic was used to deliver story and structure commissions, not on removing every TV-style sequence from the game.
Why did HoYoverse plan to reduce its use?
In a September 24, 2024 report, GamesRadar+ quoted designer Y acknowledging that the mode had issues at release and describing player feedback around three concerns:
- Time: TV sections could make progression feel slower than players wanted.
- Combat continuity: Moving into grid navigation could interrupt the flow of the game’s action combat.
- Early-game frequency: The proportion of TV Mode content was seen by some as excessive, particularly early on.
These are reported concerns, not evidence that every player disliked the mode. The reports mention surveys and feedback but do not publish an attributable statistic measuring how many players agreed.

What changes were reported, and when?
The coverage described a planned change in how the main story was presented, alongside redesign work for some commissions and story flows. These were plans reported in 2024; the sources below do not establish that every planned redesign shipped exactly as described.
| Timing | What was reported | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| September 24, 2024 | HoYoverse planned to use TV Mode less as a means of story presentation and pursue a more consistent stage-based approach. Some commission and story flows were to be redesigned, with version 1.4 cited as an estimate for some of that work. | GamesRadar+, reporting on developer comments; not a directly reviewed official transcript. |
| Version 1.2 and later | The main narrative was reported to be moving away from TV Mode beginning with version 1.2, while the mode could still be iterated on or used in other contexts. | PCGamesN, published September 24, 2024; this describes the reported direction, not independent verification of every later release. |
| May 15, 2026 | An article appeared with a headline describing a cutback after negative feedback. It does not establish a separate, newly announced 2026 change. | Position Is Everything; no new official HoYoverse announcement is verified by the available reporting. |
Was TV Mode removed?
No. The 2024 reports describe reducing its role in story presentation and redesigning some flows, not abolishing the mechanic. PCGamesN noted that TV Mode could be revisited or used elsewhere, so the reported direction was a change in emphasis: more direct, stage-based story delivery, with room for TV-style gameplay in other situations.

Is the cutback a new 2026 announcement?
That framing is not supported by the available evidence. The concrete developer comments and planned timelines in the cited coverage date to September 2024. A May 2026 article used a headline about cutting back on excessive TV Mode, but the available search did not verify a new official announcement from HoYoverse tied to that date. GamesRadar+ also reported the designer’s remarks rather than linking them to a transcript directly reviewed here.
