Each upgrade adds Nintendo-listed visual and loading improvements, a second save file, and support for ZELDA NOTES. You need the corresponding full game and a Nintendo Switch 2 to play either edition.
What do the Switch 2 Editions add?
Nintendo lists higher resolution, improved frame rates, HDR support, and faster loading for both games. Its product listings do not give resolution figures, frame-rate targets, or measured loading-time reductions, so there are no verified numbers here for comparing performance with the original Switch versions.
Both editions also include an additional save file and compatibility with ZELDA NOTES, a game-specific service in the Nintendo Switch app.
Save-file limitation
Nintendo says the second save created in a Switch 2 Edition cannot be transferred to the original Nintendo Switch version. Consider this before starting a separate playthrough if you may want to continue it on the older console.

What do you need to play an upgrade?
- The matching full game: The Breath of the Wild upgrade requires Breath of the Wild, and the Tears of the Kingdom upgrade requires Tears of the Kingdom.
- A Nintendo Switch 2: Nintendo says both Switch 2 Editions can be played only on that console, not on an original Nintendo Switch.
How much do the upgrades cost, and is either included with a membership?
For the United States, Nintendo Support lists the Tears of the Kingdom Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack at $9.99 USD. Active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members can access that upgrade at no additional charge. Nintendo’s product listing also says the Breath of the Wild upgrade is available at no additional charge to active Expansion Pack members, but the cited Support price applies to Tears of the Kingdom only; a standalone Breath of the Wild price and prices for other regions are not established here.

Membership access is conditional, not a permanent free upgrade: Nintendo says only active Expansion Pack members can play the Tears of the Kingdom Switch 2 Edition obtained through the membership. Nintendo also says this membership download is not treated as a virtual game card. Check Nintendo’s current regional listing for the applicable purchase and membership terms.

If you already own the matching Switch game, the upgrade pack is the relevant option. If you do not own it, Nintendo lists a physical Tears of the Kingdom Nintendo Switch 2 Edition released June 5, 2025; confirm current availability and price with a retailer. The upgrade packs themselves do not replace the required full game.
