Remedy trades zombie hordes for paranatural crises inside Control’s shifting Oldest House, and prioritizes missions and moment-to-moment teamwork over a single-player story or extended exploration. It is a standalone game, so you do not need to know Control to play.
Is FBC: Firebreak like Left 4 Dead?
The useful comparison is the broad one: players cooperate against AI-controlled threats in a first-person shooter. Remedy describes Firebreak as a three-player cooperative PvE game, with responders facing otherworldly forces inside the Federal Bureau of Control’s headquarters. That makes it a co-op action game, not a Left 4 Dead sequel or a game in the same fictional universe. Remedy’s game page

The distinction is in what the setting and structure are built to do. Remedy game director Mike Kayatta said Firebreak was designed around “world over story” and “action over exploration.” Rather than follow the kind of single-player narrative progression associated with Control, it puts players in missions where their experiences with teammates take priority. Remedy calls it a standalone experience. Xbox Wire interview with Mike Kayatta
What does Remedy’s surreal setting add?
Firebreak takes place after Control, within the same strange world, but the game does not require familiarity with that story. Players are FBC responders confronting paranatural emergencies in the Oldest House, a headquarters where the ordinary and impossible collide. The setting supplies the unfamiliar threats and unsettling atmosphere; the focus remains on cooperative combat rather than investigating the world at length. Remedy’s announcement

That surreal touch is not simply a promise of comedy. Kayatta described the game as keeping both the absurd and serious elements of Control, adjusted for a co-op game. As he put it, “FBC: Firebreak is a game about people trapped in an absurd world fighting for their lives.” The contrast is part of the premise: the world can be bizarre, while the responders’ danger and teamwork are real. Can you play solo, and how does matchmaking work?
Remedy says solo matchmaking is available, but the game has no AI teammates and solo play is challenging. Jobs scale according to the number of players, but scaling does not replace the coordination or extra hands a team can provide. Firebreak is best approached as a game for people willing to matchmake or bring friends, rather than as a conventional solo campaign. Remedy Help Center FAQ
Cross-play is supported between PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Progress is tied to the platform account, however, and does not carry between platforms. Remedy’s FAQ says communication is handled externally; PlayStation lists quick chat and pings as communication options on its product page. Do not assume that built-in voice chat is available. Remedy announced its Open House update in March 2026 as Firebreak’s final major content update. It added five Control-inspired arenas to Endless Shift, along with gameplay and balance changes, Twitch Drops, and Friend’s Pass. Remedy said the game would remain online and playable for years, citing relay-server infrastructure designed for sustainable upkeep with fewer players. That is the company’s stated plan, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. Remedy’s Open House announcement
