If Final Fantasy XIV suddenly goes silent, first check whether other apps still have sound and whether Windows or your console is sending audio to the intended output. Square Enix has documented a Windows-specific device-recognition failure that can freeze FFXIV’s sound processing, but that historical issue does not explain every current dropout. The steps below help separate an FFXIV-only problem from an output-device or system-audio problem.
First, work out what is losing audio
- While FFXIV is silent, test another source. Play a browser video or a Windows sound. If those are silent too, start with the system, output device, or connection. If they work, focus on FFXIV’s routing and settings.
- Check the selected output and volume. Confirm the intended headphones, speakers, or other playback device is selected. In Windows, check the volume mixer for FFXIV’s app volume and mute state as well as the device’s master volume. Microsoft also recommends confirming that the device is enabled. Microsoft’s Windows audio troubleshooting guide covers these general checks.
- Note what changes when the dropout happens. Record whether the sound disappears completely or stutters, whether other apps keep playing, and whether a headset, controller, or output device disconnects or changes. Also note whether it began after a game, system, or driver update. These clues help distinguish an output-path failure from a game-only problem.
What Square Enix says about the Windows failure
Square Enix’s May 25, 2023 Lodestone notice describes a Windows failure in which the computer stops recognizing the sound device while FFXIV’s sound-reset process runs. The notice says that this can leave the game’s sound processing frozen. Square Enix traced the underlying process to Patch 6.0 and said an internal process change in Patch 6.4 may have triggered the reports. Those patch references describe the historical context; they do not establish that all present-day sound loss has the same cause.
If the output device has disappeared or switched, close FFXIV, select the intended Windows playback device and make it the Default Device, then relaunch the game as a diagnostic test. This can show whether the client recovers its routing after the device is recognized again; it is not a guaranteed fix.
Windows: isolate the game and its audio path
Check the connection before changing settings
Square Enix support advises confirming that the intended playback device is connected. If practical, try another port or test with another set of headphones or speakers you already have. Change one thing at a time and note the result. These are ways to isolate a connection or output problem, not evidence that buying replacement hardware will solve it.

Test FFXIV settings one at a time
Square Enix’s PC sound troubleshooting guidance asks players to test these conditions and report what happens:
- Run the game in DirectX 9.
- Unplug the gamepad.
- Set Equalizer Mode to Standard.
- Move Listening Position closer to the character.
Try each change separately when possible, so you can identify which condition affects the dropout. If performance load may be involved, also reduce Character and Object Quantity and close background applications; include those conditions in your notes.

If other Windows audio is affected
For a system-wide audio problem, Microsoft’s general Windows guidance includes checking connections and volume, disabling audio enhancements, updating or reinstalling drivers, trying another audio format, and restarting Windows Audio services. These steps address Windows audio generally; they do not confirm an FFXIV-specific cause. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so consider the support status of your operating system when following platform advice.
PlayStation: check game, system, HDMI, and output settings
For PS5 or PS4, Square Enix’s PlayStation sound guidance recommends checking that both the system and game are updated, confirming that in-game sound has not been disabled, inspecting and reseating the HDMI connection where applicable, and reviewing the console’s audio output settings.

Square Enix lists these FFXIV output formats: 2-channel LPCM, 5.1-channel LPCM, 5.1-channel DTS Digital Surround, and 5.1-channel Dolby Digital. If installed game data may be corrupted, reinstalling is a possible later step; it is not the first check to make.

If the issue persists and appears limited to FFXIV, Square Enix asks players to provide details that make the case reproducible. Record the Character and Object Quantity setting, background applications, whether the intended output is the Windows Default Device, and the results of the DirectX 9, unplugged-gamepad, Standard Equalizer Mode, and closer Listening Position tests. Include the launcher’s system information as requested in the in-game sound support guidance.
