Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster is worth considering if you want two substantial RPGs in one collection—especially for Final Fantasy X, the stronger and more consistently compelling half. The package refreshes the presentation and includes content from the games’ International editions, but it is a remaster, not a remake: the original games’ design and some dated visuals remain. X-2 is a much faster, brighter sequel, and its sharp tonal change will not suit every player.
What’s included in Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster?
The collection contains both Final Fantasy X and its direct sequel, Final Fantasy X-2. It is not just an HD version of the first game. Square Enix describes the release as bringing International-edition additions to the games and advertises more than 60 rearranged or remastered soundtrack tracks. Square Enix’s collection page gives an overview of the package.
Platform features vary. For example, the official PS4 listing specifies a choice between remastered and original audio for X, a 30-minute audio drama, additional NPCs and monsters, and cross-save compatibility with PS3 and Vita versions. Those details describe the PS4 edition; check the listing for the platform you intend to buy rather than assuming every version has identical features. The US PlayStation Store listing identifies that edition.
How do the two games compare?
| What changes | Final Fantasy X | Final Fantasy X-2 |
|---|---|---|
| Tone and story | An earnest, dramatic pilgrimage story. | A brighter, more theatrical sequel with pronounced tonal shifts. |
| Combat and pace | Strategic turn-based battles, including the ability to swap party members during combat. | A faster active battle system, with dressphere changes adding flexibility. |
| Progression and additions | Character growth through the sphere grid; the International content includes an expert grid and dark aeons. | Dresspheres, creature creator, tournaments and Last Mission are among the added content. |
The differences are substantial enough that enjoying one does not guarantee enjoying the other. X builds its drama gradually and rewards deliberate battle planning. X-2 moves with more energy and theatricality, while its combat and job-like dressphere system give it a different rhythm. If you want a single consistent mood across both games, the sequel’s shift may be jarring; if you welcome a contrasting follow-up, it can make the collection more varied.

What do reviews say about the remaster?
GameSpot’s Josiah Renaudin rated the collection 8/10 in a review dated March 27, 2014. He praised X for its story, strategic turn-based combat and extensive character progression, and considered the presentation improvements and International content worthwhile. His reservations focused on X-2’s tonal shifts and textures that still looked dated. Renaudin’s verdict on the first game was: “Final Fantasy X doesn’t feel stuck in the past.” Read the GameSpot review.
That score is one critic’s assessment, not a universal verdict. Metacritic’s collected review excerpts include strong recommendations and praise for both remasters, as well as criticism of X-2 and of gameplay conventions that feel old-fashioned. The recurring split is that the collection’s core appeal—particularly X—holds up for many reviewers, while X-2’s changed tone is more divisive. Metacritic’s critic-review page brings together excerpts.

Is X-2 included on the Switch cartridge?
It depends on the physical edition and region. A 2019 MeriStation review reported that the Western Nintendo Switch physical release placed X on the cartridge and supplied X-2 as a download code; Japanese and Asian editions included both games on cartridge. This is a report about those editions, not a guarantee for every later Switch release or any Switch 2 package. Check the box contents for the specific copy you are buying. MeriStation’s 2019 review describes the regional distinction.
