It rewards careful ability timing and precision dodges, making it a better fit for players comfortable managing gauges and cooldowns. If you want a less execution-heavy setup, or own The Rising Tide and want to use Leviathan, the right build changes.
Which overpowered build should you use?
“Best overpowered build” can mean maximum burst during a stagger window, reliable general play, or the strongest option available with your current content and progression. The build guides offer different configurations for different goals; they do not establish a single objectively strongest setup through controlled comparisons.

- Base-game late-game damage: Choose the Odin/Zantetsuken-centered setup below if you are willing to manage its timing and execution demands.
- DLC access and more control: Choose the Leviathan-centered setup if you own The Rising Tide.
- First playthrough: Use endgame base-game gear; do not plan around Ultima Weapon, which is a New Game+ progression reward.
Base-game build: Odin and Zantetsuken burst
Game8 recommends this ability configuration for high damage and burst around stagger opportunities. It is also described as demanding and suited to Final Fantasy Mode, rather than a universally forgiving setup. Game8’s build guide provides the recommendation.
Eikons and abilities
| Eikon | Abilities | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Shiva | Cold Snap; Diamond Dust | Precision dodge and stagger support. |
| Garuda or Leviathan | Deadly Embrace; Impulse | Control and pressure. Leviathan is the DLC option. |
| Odin | Arm of Darkness; Dancing Steel | Build and use the Zantetsuken gauge. |
| Flexible damage slot | Gigaflare; Judgment Bolt | High-damage abilities for burst opportunities. |
Game8’s listed ability set is Cold Snap, Lightning Rod, Dancing Steel, Deadly Embrace, Impulse, Gigaflare, Arm of Darkness, Diamond Dust, and Judgment Bolt. Match these to the Eikon slots available in your loadout; the guide’s recommended lineup is Shiva, Garuda or Leviathan, and Odin.

Accessories
The guide recommends Assailment Bit, Genji Gloves +1, and Escapement Bit for this setup. Those are recommendations for the specific rotation, not proof that the trio is best for every player or encounter.
How to play it
- Use Cold Snap when you can reliably time the precision dodge; it is an active part of the setup, not a passive defense bonus.
- Use Dancing Steel and Arm of Darkness to build and manage the Zantetsuken gauge. Avoid spending abilities without considering their timing and the gauge you are trying to build.
- Use control and stagger-support abilities to create or extend an opening, then concentrate high-damage attacks such as Gigaflare and Judgment Bolt in the available burst window.
- Check ability cooldowns before committing the full rotation. The timing required is one reason this setup is less forgiving than a general-purpose build.
The Rising Tide alternative: Leviathan control and damage
For players with The Rising Tide, Game8 recommends a Leviathan-centered setup that adds group control and another rotation option. Square Enix confirms that the DLC adds Leviathan, new Eikonic abilities, weapons, accessories, a level-cap increase, and Kairos Gate endgame stages. Square Enix’s DLC overview describes the expansion’s additions.

Eikons and abilities
| Eikon | Abilities | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Leviathan | Serpent’s Cry; Tsunami; Deluge; Abyssal Tear; Cross Swell | DLC-centered attacks and group control. |
| Garuda | Deadly Embrace; Impulse | Control and pressure. |
| Shiva | Diamond Dust; Cold Snap | Stagger support and precision-dodge utility. |
Game8’s recommended accessory choices for this build are Assailment Bit, Genji Gloves, and The Favor of Water (Tsunami). Use it when Leviathan’s abilities and added control suit the encounter; ownership of The Rising Tide is required to access Leviathan.
Equipment: what to prioritize at endgame
For base-game equipment, Push Square’s June 8, 2025 guide identifies Gotterdammerung as the best sword by stats, listing 375 Attack and 375 Stagger. Its armor recommendations balance defense and HP rather than maximizing one stat in isolation. See Push Square’s equipment guide.

| Ouroboros | 95 Defense; 32 HP | Balanced defensive option in the guide. |
| Founder’s Grasp | 94 Defense; 50 HP | More HP than Ouroboros, with one less point of Defense. |
| Sons of Ouroboros | 97 Defense; 32 HP | More Defense than Founder’s Grasp, but less HP. |
Accessory slots involve competing priorities. Push Square lists Genji Gloves for a flat 5% damage increase, Adamantite Gauntlets for +500 base HP, Crimson Tassels for 3% Limit Break generation on damage, and Dire Wolf Jess for 5% combo damage. Choose for the job: damage or combo payoff for offense, added HP for survivability, or Limit Break generation if that better supports your play. These equipment recommendations do not replace the build-specific accessory picks above.

Ultima Weapon belongs to a different progression point from a first-playthrough endgame build. Gamer Guides says it can be crafted only in New Game+ on Final Fantasy Mode, after obtaining the required reforged swords, and lists 700 Attack and 700 Will-Damage. Treat that as a progression note, not a base-game first-run recommendation; it is a guide claim rather than an official equipment confirmation. Gamer Guides’ Ultima Weapon entry gives its crafting conditions and listed stats.
Check cooldowns before changing accessories
Cooldowns can affect how smoothly a rotation works, and accessories can affect them. Square Enix’s version 1.10 notes say the Abilities menu displays cooldown times and how equipped accessories affect them. Open the Abilities menu and use its Details view to compare the current values for your equipped setup, rather than assuming a cooldown from an older build applies unchanged. Square Enix’s update notes document the menu information.
Quick Recap
How to choose between burst, control, and survivability
- Choose the Odin setup when your priority is high damage around stagger openings and you can manage the gauge, timing, and precision dodge.
- Choose the Leviathan setup when you own the DLC and want its abilities and group-control options in your rotation.
- Change accessories for the encounter when damage, combo output, Limit Break generation, cooldown utility, or HP matters more than keeping a guide’s exact trio.
- Keep progression in view: base-game endgame equipment, DLC abilities, and New Game+ Final Fantasy Mode rewards are not interchangeable availability assumptions.
