Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles is a strong way to revisit Ivalice or approach its tactical battles for the first time, especially in Enhanced mode. Its turn-based, tile-by-tile combat rewards planning rather than reflexes; the revised presentation and convenience features help, but they do not erase the game’s difficulty spikes. Classic mode is the more direct choice for players who want the 1997 graphics and gameplay with the War of the Lions translation.
What is Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles?
Square Enix released FINAL FANTASY TACTICS – The Ivalice Chronicles on September 30, 2025, for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Square Enix’s announcement also mentions Steam Deck. The game follows Ramza and Delita amid Ivalice’s political conflict, class divisions, and rival nobles.
This is a tactical role-playing game, not an action RPG: battles are turn-based, and the board’s terrain, unit placement, and character builds shape your options. Square Enix describes a roster of over 20 jobs and over 300 character abilities. Those are publisher-provided scope figures, not independently counted totals. Square Enix’s June 2025 announcement outlines the combat and feature set.
Is the remaster worth playing?
For players drawn to deliberate tactical battles and a politically charged fantasy story, the remaster offers a substantial campaign with two ways to approach its presentation. Enhanced is the natural starting point if you want updated visuals, full voice acting, a revised script, and modern conveniences. Returning players who value the original presentation can choose Classic instead.

That recommendation comes with a meaningful caveat: the game still expects you to think ahead, and its conveniences do not guarantee a smooth difficulty curve. In a September 2025 review of the PS5 version, TechRadar’s Harry Padoan praised the faithful expansion, visuals, fast-forward, and autosave, while also reporting punishing difficulty spikes, uneven voice performances, and camera friction. Those are one reviewer’s impressions, based on more than 50 hours with the main story and some side content, errands, and random encounters—not a consensus score. Read the TechRadar review.
Enhanced vs. Classic: which mode should you choose?
| What matters | Enhanced | Classic |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics and presentation | Improved graphics and an updated interface. | The graphics and gameplay of the 1997 release. |
| Script and voices | Revised script, additional dialogue, and full voice acting. | Uses the War of the Lions translation; full voice acting is not listed for Classic on the official page. |
| Convenience and difficulty | Includes modern conveniences and the Squire difficulty setting. Square Enix also lists turn-order confirmation, tactical view, battle fast-forward, and battle autosave among the additions. | Retains the original gameplay; the official page does not list Enhanced’s new convenience features for this mode. |
| Best fit | Newcomers and returning players who want an updated presentation or more help easing into battles. | Players who want the 1997 graphics and gameplay while reading the War of the Lions translation. |
These are distinct ways to play, not a promise that every mode reproduces every aspect of the original unchanged. Square Enix’s official game page describes Classic as combining the 1997 graphics and gameplay with the War of the Lions translation, while Enhanced makes broader presentation and gameplay updates.

How do the battles play?
Combat unfolds across a grid, with units acting in turn order. Terrain and positioning matter: where a character stands affects how you approach enemies and make use of the battlefield. Between fights, job customization and character abilities give you room to shape a party around your preferred tactics. The breadth can be appealing if you enjoy planning and experimenting, but it also means success is not simply a matter of choosing the strongest attack each turn.
Enhanced’s turn-order confirmation, tactical view, battle fast-forward, and battle autosave address different points of friction: seeing what is coming, reading the battlefield, moving through battles more quickly, and preserving progress. Adjustable difficulty, including Squire, offers another way to tune the challenge. These supports make the structure more approachable without turning it into an action game or removing the need to plan.
