To unlock Facewear in Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail, obtain and use the item for the style you want. Then equip it from the Facewear slot in the Character equipment window or through Character → Facewear. Facewear is a cosmetic slot separate from headgear, so you do not equip the unlock item itself.
How do I unlock Facewear in FFXIV Dawntrail?
- Get the style’s unlock item. Many are named “The Faces We Wear – [style],” such as The Faces We Wear – Oval Spectacles. The route depends on the style: the catalogue includes purchases, Gold Saucer rewards, PvP, treasure maps, raids, field operations, and seasonal rewards. Check the source for the exact style rather than assuming every item comes from the same vendor or is always available. The Facewear catalogue is a secondary index of styles and acquisition routes.
- Use the item from your inventory. This registers the style to your character. The item is an unlock, not gear you must keep equipped.
- Select the unlocked style. Open the Character equipment window and choose its Facewear slot, or open Character → Facewear from the main menu. Choose a style and one of its twelve colors. Square Enix says Facewear also appears in portraits. See the Patch 7.0 notes.
Once unlocked, a style can be equipped or removed freely. The twelve color choices are selections within Facewear; they should not be confused with dye channels or a promise that each style supports user-applied dyeing.
What if I owned glasses before Dawntrail?
Patch 7.0 converted four fashion accessories into Facewear: False Oval Spectacles, False Shaded Spectacles, False Classic Spectacles, and Rose-colored Spectacles. If you acquired one of these before Patch 7.0, you can claim its corresponding Facewear at no cost from a Calamity Salvager in Limsa Lominsa, Gridania, or Ul’dah. Check with the Salvager before buying or searching for the style.
The old items used to acquire those accessories were not deleted. If you already hold one—or obtain one through trading or the Market Board—you can still use it. This is a specific route for those four converted designs, not a general way to unlock every Facewear style. Square Enix’s Patch 7.0 notes describe the conversion and redemption.

Where do Facewear items come from?
There is no single source for the catalogue. Depending on the style, its unlock item may be tied to a vendor, Gold Saucer currency, PvP, treasure maps, raids, field operations, or a seasonal event. Some routes can be time-sensitive, so verify current availability for the exact item before farming or traveling to a vendor.
Square Enix’s Patch 7.1 notes describe unlock items for Brass Goggles, Under-rim Glasses, Oval Reading Glasses, Elegant Rimless Glasses, and Cat Eye Glasses. The Japanese-language Patch 7.56 notes list unlock items for Antique Monocle and Teardrop Glasses. These examples show the catalogue continued to grow; they do not establish that every style is currently obtainable by the same route.
Can I wear glasses with a hat?
Facewear has its own slot, separate from headgear, but that alone does not guarantee that every Facewear style will display correctly with every hat or headgear model. Check the specific combination in-game rather than relying on a universal compatibility promise.

Facewear was added in Patch 7.0 as a separate cosmetic equipment slot. It lets you register a style using its item, then equip or remove that style independently of the unlock item. The system’s twelve color options apply to Facewear selection; the available sources do not establish universal compatibility with all headgear or user-defined dyeing for every design.
