If Final Fantasy XIV Online will not log in, keeps disconnecting, or becomes unstable on PS5, check PlayStation Network and FFXIV service notices first. If services are up, work through the local checks below in order: test the PS5 connection, restart devices, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, then review router settings cautiously. These are diagnostic steps, not guaranteed fixes for every cause.
1. Check whether FFXIV or PlayStation Network is having an incident
Before changing your network, check PlayStation Network service status and the FFXIV Lodestone news and notices. A service-side outage or maintenance window can look like a problem with your PS5 or home internet. Notices may affect only a particular region or data center, so look for the details that match your account and World.
Square Enix documented North American data center network trouble on January 22, 2026, involving disconnections, login difficulty, and data access; it said the provider issue had been addressed. A separate recovery notice on January 25, 2026 described similar issues for EU data center Worlds. Those are historical incidents, not evidence of a current outage: check current notices before acting on them.
2. See whether other PS5 online services work
Try another online PS5 feature or game. If several online services fail while PSN status also reports a problem, wait for service recovery and retry FFXIV rather than changing game-specific or router settings. PlayStation recommends checking service status when server failure or maintenance may be involved.

3. Run the PS5 connection test
- Open Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection on PS5. If the menu wording differs after a system update, look under Network for the connection test.
- Review whether the console connects to the internet and whether the test reports a problem. A failed test points toward the console’s connection or home network, while a successful test does not rule out intermittent packet loss or a game-service incident.
PlayStation’s network guidance recommends this test as an initial check. It helps distinguish an obvious local connectivity failure from an issue that needs further diagnosis.
4. Restart the PS5
Restart the console and try FFXIV again. This is a low-risk way to clear a temporary console networking problem; save or close other activity first so you do not interrupt it.

5. Power-cycle the modem and router
PlayStation’s troubleshooting guidance recommends switching off the modem and router and waiting at least five minutes before turning them back on. Once the network is available again, rerun the PS5 connection test and retry the game.
6. Compare Wi-Fi with a wired LAN connection
If possible, connect the PS5 to the router with an Ethernet LAN cable and test the same activity that was failing. A wired connection is an optional diagnostic comparison, not a required purchase. If the wired connection is stable while Wi-Fi is not, the wireless link is a more likely local weak point than the FFXIV service itself.

Square Enix has advised that switching from Wi-Fi to a hard-wired connection can improve stability. In its historical congestion notice, it also associated some Error 2002 incidents with packet loss or network instability. That context does not mean every Error 2002 is caused by your Wi-Fi or that Ethernet will always resolve it.
7. Improve the Wi-Fi path
If you cannot use Ethernet, move the PS5 closer to the router and reduce obstacles between them. Walls, distance, and interference can weaken a wireless connection. Make one change at a time, then test again so you can tell whether placement helped.

8. Check power-saving settings if the problem happens in a long login queue
If FFXIV disconnects while the PS5 is waiting in a long login queue, review console power-saving behavior that may disconnect the internet during inactivity. Square Enix specifically advised PS4 and PS5 players to check this in the context of queue congestion. The issue is relevant to queue-time disconnections; it is not a general explanation for every login failure.

Check the router manufacturer’s instructions or your internet provider’s guidance for firmware updates. If you use Wi-Fi, confirm that the PS5 is using the correct network and credentials. Avoid changing several router settings at once: if a change makes connectivity worse, you need to know what to undo.

10. Treat advanced network changes as a last resort
PlayStation troubleshooting materials discuss IP, DNS, MTU, proxy, and port settings for certain connection errors. These are general PS5 network options, not proven FFXIV-specific prescriptions. Do not enter arbitrary DNS values or set up port forwarding on the assumption that either is a guaranteed fix; ask your ISP or router support for advice if you do not understand the impact of a change.
One specific compatibility check is IPv6: PS5 supports IPv6 connections, but not IPv6-only networks. If your router is configured for IPv6 only, PlayStation’s setup guidance says to change it to use IPv4. Consult the router or ISP documentation before changing network configuration.
What Error 2002 and a loading-screen problem can tell you
FFXIV Error 2002
Error 2002 can occur during a long login queue, and Square Enix has discussed packet loss or network instability in connection with some such incidents. Check current service notices, then compare wired and Wi-Fi behavior and review queue-time power saving if the disconnect happens while waiting. The available official information does not establish a universal cause or a success rate for these steps.
Stuck on a loading screen
A PS5-specific loading issue after logging out in certain areas was reported in May 2021 and addressed in maintenance ending June 2, 2021. It was a resolved, dated issue, not a current general explanation for loading trouble. For a present-day problem, check current notices and work through the connection checks above rather than assuming that old bug is still active.
